#376187 — Technical definition of operating system

"A platform that consists of specific set of libraries and
infrastructure for applications to be built upon and interact with
each other."

Please explain how that doesn't refer to the Linux kernel and how I
"didn't install the Linux operating system" if the kernel, installed
through four disks, was copied from them onto a hard disk.

LOL. Alright, once again, whatever rocks your boat.

I only removed you from my filter because Marek really thought you
were a nice guy. I realize that he's wrong and you really are an idiot.

Peter Köhlmann claimed: "I have hardly talked about [Snit]" during October,
when I did not post at all.

You lied. Period.

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! What a technical idiot!

The definition, if that is what it is, is so fucking vague as
to be totally worthless.

An OS, like Linux, executes in protected space, or "Ring 0"
as it is known in the Intel universe.

GNU/Linux is the minimum "user space" software and libraries
that are necessary for a user to interact with the kernel and
hence with the hardware.

Only a command processor (e.g. bash, csh, etc.) plus a C library
(e.g. glibc) are necessary for a fully functional OS.

Whoops! I forgot to add:

This is an NG for Linux advocates, not a forum for technically
incompetent and dilettantish assholes to express their boring
ignorance.

GET THE FUCK OUTA HERE NOW!!!

I don't know where you got that definition, but the thing is that the
POSIX Specification is what is used by most persons. The POSIX
Specification is not summed up in just a few sentences, however.

Essentially, under the POSIX Specification, a POSIX-certified Operating
System is made up of the kernel space, and the user space. Therefore,
because the Linux kernel is only a kernel (albeit monolythic), the actual
user utilities are of the GNU Userland in the system User Space (though
some Linux distributions do not use the GNU Userland).

Because of this, POSIX compliance says that both the GNU Userland and
the Linux kernel make up the entire base system. If it were the BusyBox
userland, then it would still be the Busybox Userland plus Linux Kernel
making up the entire system.

The main reason why I say GNU/Linux is not to mean especially that I am
using a completed GNU system using the Linux Kernel, but instead I am
saying it to show my support for the Free Software movement.

If I may add (as I forgot to add it into my post), RMS has made a
wonderful speech as to why it should be referred to as GNU/Linux at the
second LinuxPlanet conference in the film Revolution OS, which the audio
of is here:

https://goblinrefuge.com/mediagoblin/u/se7en/m/richard-stallman-live-at-
gnu-york-city/

He speaks on how referring to it as GNU/Linux has people ask ``What is
the GNU part'' and when people look up The GNU Project, they'll read the
philosophy of the original movement. Some will then choose to embrace the
philosophical aspects.
