#375566 — A GNU World in a Degenerate Universe

SubjectA GNU World in a Degenerate Universe
Message-ID<ntb2760j2j@news6.newsguy.com>
I could easily use GNU/Linux for EVERYTHING and suffer no loss
of any kind.

But there is always the issue of exchanging information (i.e.
documents) with other people. The majority of these "others"
use Microjunk formats, and needless to say GNU/Linux cannot
handle these formats. Traditionally, Microjunk formats were
always a weird amalgamation of binary streams that are closely
related tho their equally weird Component Object Model. The
newer Microjunk OOXML format is more amenable to GNU/Linux
but it is far from being a truly open standard.

Richard Stallman outlined a strategy to entice people into
using more open formats for data exchange but, as one can
easily foresee, the strategy got nowhere:

https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/no-word-attachments.en.html

Most people are lazy and spiritless and could not muster the
aggressive energy needed to implement the change (that's why
they use Microjunk in the first place).

But Stallman's strategy is no longer needed. Microjunk has
for some reason decided to allow its Office suite to actually
read and write ODF file formats, which are TRULY open formats
and which are natively produced by GNU/Linux LibreOffice.

Therefore LibreOffice ODF documents can be directly presented
to Microjunk users without any problems. No conversion is
necessary.

Note that most Microjunk Office users won't even notice the
ODF extension and will just load and open as usual. But there
still needs to be education and coercion to get Microjunk users
to actually save their documents in ODF formats for exchange
with GNU/Linux users -- and this will not be a simple matter.
After all, people who use Microjunk are so retarded as to be
literally uneducable.

This is truly a wonderful step in the right direction. I find it strange
we ever went outside of Plain-Text for important things, tbh. Do you
really need heavily formatted headers on things as simple as a business
report?

Still, I feel that LaTeX is superior to ANY of the open-document markdown
formats, but for those who choose to use a document processor for
convenience or otherwise, the fact that MS Word now supports ODF is a
significant step in the right direction. Of course, knowing M$, they
probably are setting it up incorrectly and it'll render awfully. If they
do it would most likely be an attempt to discourage its use...

I don't want to get MS Office just to see how it opens an ODF though.

Harsh, but about 95% true. The thing is that they're normies who thanks
to Microsoft marketing and constantly given the choice between Microsoft
Windows or the Controlled Opposition system Apple Macintosh that they
don't really know anything else exists. Exposing them to alt-OS and alt-
Kernels and giving them a *true* computer history lesson (not the one
made by MS saying DOS was dominate then came Windows and everyone enjoyed
it), it will help them a lot.

I actually made a little guide for helping Normies. I haven't update it
in quite a while, but what it has so far is still good.

https://se7en.neocities.org/articles/normies.html

Still, I think saying they are uneducatable is more of a defeatist
attitude. If you tell one of the normies that they'll give you responses
like ``You're a zelot'' or ``I don't like you, you fucking hipster'' or
things similar to that. Best to avoid that language with them.

Well, formatting does play a role in facilitating a quick understanding
of the data. Every time I view a bank statement, for example, most
of which are still produced using, it would seem, 1960's technology,
I wish that the damned thing had better formatting.

But better formatting does not imply exclusively Microjunk formatted
files. There are PDF, HTML, RTF, and ODF, which are all open formats.

Microjunk Office does issue a warning whenever a file is about to
be saved in a format other than MSOffice formats. The warning states
that some layout structure MAY be lost, but in 99% of cases that
warning just does not apply. Microjunk is capable of some types of
formatting that can go beyond what is available in open formats, but
in the average case those special types are completely absent.

That is a major problem.

Open file formats have been around for quite some time, but if one
does a survey of web portals, for example, that ask for document
submissions, the list of accepted document formats that is given
never includes open document formats. Never. Why not? The people
who design and build such web sites are supposed to be educated or
even certified, yet they universally seem to be ignorant of open
document formats.

Every time I see that obese, disgusting, repulsive sasquatch telling
people what to do, I wanna send money directly to Microsoft.

Why should Windows users accomodate a tiny number of open format users?
You made your poor choices: Linux and LibreOffice. Now suffer with them.

> needed to implement the change (that's why

No, we just like to use the best software (example: try and find an
Access replacement on Linux. There isn't one.)

And we want something that works. Linux doesn't.

Then maybe he'll shut his idiot piehole for a change.

Truly open, and truly slow.

You GuhNoo/Linux users who want to coerce the world to use .odf can suck
it. The world chose MS Office and its formats 25+ years ago.

You use MS to make a living, Feeb. So STFU.

I agree with some of what RMS says but like most extremists he's a
couple of cards short of a full deck.

I remember hearing him a few years ago on a Linux podcast, Linux Outlaws
I think, where he was arguing with one of the hosts that it would be the
right thing to do to let his family starve rather than take a job
programming closed source software. That is just crazy.

It was on the Linux Action Show and he was saying that to Bryan
Lunduke whose jaw just dropped.

I listen to Jupiter Broadcasting. I like those guys... Although I think
Noah is a better Linux guy than Chris Fisher. That guy ought to do his
own shows. The BSD show is good. And there is another one called, The
ubuntu Podcast which is more fun than anything.

Of course everyone knows Twit, but I listen to those guys almost never
these days.

I haven't watched much of their show in years especially since the
content is fairly redundant after a while. I never really liked Chris
and he always struck me as a zealot rather than any kind of truthful
individual but Bryan Lunduke was excellent and it's a shame that he's
no longer there. None of the replacements they had for him so far have
been any good.

They just had an episode yesterday. I'm not sure which it was. Noah and
Chris got into a little argument over some device and how people are
using it to pirate movies. I think Noah was dead on correct and Chris,
the host again shows his lack of tolerance for other points of view.

I'd like to see Noah drop Jupiter and go out on his own. He's a better
host and a better Linux advocate in my opinion. The show can be funny at
times and once in a while they hit upon a subject that is informative
and helpful. If nothing else it keeps me a little current on what's
going on in the world of Linux.

I decided to watch it right now. I'm curious about what you're
referring to but I wouldn't be surprised to see Chris behave like a
zealot.

I don't think Chris acts like a zealot. Noah actually wants everything
to be Linux if possible. Which is good because it forces him to find a
solution to everything he does in production and his business.

Anyway, the discussion starts at 32 minutes regarding the Kodi add-ons.
Kodi if you don't know is an open source media server similar to an
AppleTV or an Amazon Fire. This is the Linux Action Show episode 438
which was released yesterday.

Nah, I know what Kodi is but I have to say that it has more or less
become worthless now that the Phoenix repository is dead or migrated.
We used to get a crapload of recent movies on there. The legal stuff
on Kodi is more or less lame.

Use it to host your own content. I RIP my DVDs so I have them available
without a player. But I also have an Apple TV and an Amazon Fire. The
question should be, what happens when Apple decides they don't want to
be in the content business anymore?

Considering how profitable it has been for them, I doubt that will
ever happen.

You never know. Having a disc which I convert means I always have access
to it. I don't have to worry about what some company will or won't do.

I prefer the disc approach too and bought physical albums for a while
when I was convinced that I would rather have .OGG or .FLAC versions
of albums than .MP3 or .M4A. I eventually noticed that .M4A is the
best compromise between all of them but that .MP3 is fine so I stopped
caring and buy them online now.

That was the show. I thought RMS was joking until I realized he was
serious. That was the point where I realized that Stallman has some very
strange ideas.
It's interesting how many in the Linux community continue to defend and
protect him and his obtuse and unrealistic opinions and ideas. And
that's not even including his comments on pedophilia. He's like the
Debbie Wasserman Shultz of the Linux world. A very bad spokesperson for
Linux and someone who should retire from the evangelist role and turn
the reigns over to some other person with less polarizing views.

He's extreme in his views but I respect the fact that he won't bend.
Most people see him as unrealistic but to his credit, he believes in
his stance so deeply that he's unwilling to compromise and the ersult
is a number of distributions which follows his philosophies very
closely and which happen to perform extraordinarily well. I am very
fond of Trisquel in particular and if I didn't game at all or have a
powerful GPU on my laptop, I probably would be using it.

I have watched a fair amount of interviews with RMS over the last couple
years. For the most part I don't have any issues with him at all. I do
contribute monies and am a member of the FSF. I like his GPL a lot more
than any other license. We also him to thank for having all the bits
beyond the Kernel, which is a substantial contribution.

Fsck you, "Jim". He's got a right to express his opinons, and he is
not a "spokeman for Linux".

How long before you start calling the cola advocates "the herd",
"Jim"?
