If I want to count all the tables and rows in any Access database, it's
just:
Dim db As Database, td as TableDef
Dim tablesCnt As Integer, dbRecords As Long
Set db = OpenDatabase(path to source file)
For Each td In db.TableDefs
If td.Attributes = 0 Then
tablesCnt = tablesCnt + 1
dbRecords = dbRecords + td.RecordCount
End If
Next
Add a few lines of code to time it, and the output from an actual
database of mine is:
2,099,101 rows were found in 114 tables (0.02 seconds)
http://i.imgur.com/2s7JrUT.jpg
2/100ths of a second?
FOSS can't compete.

You became an idiot when you copy and pasted code. Your code doesn't work because you should have put the path in for the source file instead of copying and pasting code you don't understand. That is the problem with trolls like being allowed to go anywhere near a puter. Learn to code in Python. Its a lot smarter than you are. So far, no one can do better in LibreOffice. That's my point, Creepy. See the Subject? And what do you mean 'optimized'? That's one of several acceptable ways to do it, all offering excellent performance. The slowest way is "SELECT COUNT(*)" on each table, but even that runs in 0.15 seconds. LibreOffice can't compete.

But sqlite3 can.
And this is with select count(*) on each table. It's written in C, but
there's a shell script speed comparsion of basically the same algorithm
at the bottom. Imagine how fast it could be if I knew what I was doing?

sqlite3 is a nice piece of work. Their code is well-documented (also
public domain) and their documentation is excellent.
Main issue I have with it is their dynamic data typing: "[the column
data] type is recommended, not required. Any column can still store any
type of data." (except an INTEGER PRIMARY KEY column)

Where's the source code for the C and shell scripts?

That's what they say at Canonical every day.
(you seem to fake it 'til you make it...)

That's 2 columns per table.
Mine has 8.5 (it's amazing)

I posted the files earlier in tarball. It included a README, the foo.sh
script, and a "create" file for building a dummy database. Here's the
code for "count" (and remember, this is amateur hour):

#include <stdio.h>

Eternal-september must've dropped the post.

Not to worry - I don't criticize others code (unless they're pricks
like Kohlmann or Fabian).
And if I can see possible improvements, it's because it's easier to edit
than to create.

Thanks.
At some point I'll get around to testing it, and see if I can update it
to count columns and indexes.

OSX and Linux developers overtake microshaft which shatters and fragments ------------------------------------------------------------------------- It had to happen some time. The news is Earth shattering - OSX takes no.1 spot for developers, while Linux is close behind 21.7% share ahead of windopws 10 which is stuck at 20.8%. Outdated versions of windowps make up the rest which don't really count for much because those trolls can't move forward with projections with outdated and unsupported microshaft osen. Linux software is easy enough to write once and it will work on all other distros. And it will work on future distros, and vast armies of maintainers to improve the software if it has any traction with them. http://www.itproportal.com/2016/03/21/os-x-and-linux-rise-developer-market- threaten-windows/ By next year, windopws will fade with less than 50%. By then Linux developers would probably have overtaken OSX. So its looking Linux is the most demanding set of skills out there for everyone to study up and kit up.
