If websites were case-sensitive, PenIsland.com and PenisLand.com could
essentially be two different domain name purchases and each company
wouldn't mind that the other existed. The fact that it is
case-insensitive actually lowers the amount of sales places like
GoDaddy.com make.

The case for case-sensitivity is a strong one, I must admit. On the
other hand, it makes browsing somewhat more cumbersome for the people
who can't be bothered to press the shift key which seems to be the
majority of people nowadays. They already have enough difficulty
spelling correctly, imagine the war we would start if we complained
about their grammar and punctuation as well!

It's the DNS that's not case-sensitive. Most websites have a case-senstive
file system. Even Apple recognizes that case-sensitive is the way to go.

deja vu. Or is it Deja Vu ???

> Even Apple recognizes that case-sensitive is the way to go.

Or Apple is using a file system that's case sensitive for no good reason. I
don't think that Apple is making a conscious decision that they want
"index.html" to be a valid webpage but not "Index.html."

Right. Really it is a sign where Apple goofed. And it is a silly goof.

<http://www.apple.com/ipad> Works.
<http://www.apple.com/iPad> Does not work.

Apple really should fix that.

What is the value in the iPad link not working?

And why have both of these work:

<http://www.apple.com/iphone>
<http://www.apple.com/iPhone>

The second re-directs to the first.

I don't have any idea what the "value" is, but it's not broken.
The entire web works this way. You have never been able to take
for granted that anything to the right of the hostname in the URL
will be handled in a case-insensitive manner. Only the part handled
by DNS can be trusted to work that way.

OK. iMac doesn't work either. :)

If there is no value in having it not work then it is broken.

Nope. It depends on the server software (and settings).

Right: only one I found it to work with was iPhone. They must see people
making that mistake enough to care. Weird how they do not fix it elsewhere,
especially for iDevices where the second letter is likely to be capitalized.

This is made worse by Apple.com working.

No, "value" has nothing to do with it. That's just www.apple.com's
filesystem being what it is. Case-sensitive.

>> The entire web works this way.

"this way" means that only for the DNS portion can you be guaranteed
that it will be handled in a case-insensitive manner.

you know, like I said below, right after that:

Yeah, I think DNS should be case-sensitive.

The reason one has a website is for the value. Value has EVERYTHING to do
with it.

I think Apache should change the default. Absurd to make things harder for
everyone.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. About the only typing anybody
does in their web browser is a search engine query.

They why did Apple fix the iPhone problem?

And why did they NOT fix the others? It is odd.

Because they are scatter-brained?
Why did they name them iDevices anyway instead of aDevices?
They're apple products after all, not intel.

Fair enough. :)

Sounded better for marketing. But what does the "i" stand for?

Jobs originally called his new Mac design an iMac to let potential
customers believe that it was the best computer with which to connected
to the magical entity known as the Internet. The naming scheme was so
successful that he used it for the iPod and eventually the iBook. After
time, it became synonymous with Apple, regardless of how illogical it is.

I have heard "internet" and "individual" and a few other things... but
whatever it is, it has become a marketing term with no real meaning. :)

It has become the de facto name for anything Apple releases. People
basically expected that worthless piece of crap to be called the iWatch.
Being the incredibly original company that they are, they instead
decided to blow everyone's mind and call it the Apple Watch.

NOBODY SAW THAT ONE COMING!!!

Who needs innovation when you can replace an "i" with the name of the
company?

Ken Segall was an employee at an L.A. ad agency handling Apple's account who
came up with the name "iMac" and pitched it to Steve Jobs. Jobs wanted the
product to be called "MacMan", but eventually warmed to Segall's suggestion.
Segall says that the "i" stands for "Internet", but also represents the
product as a personal and revolutionary device ('i' for "individuality" and
"innovation").

Attention was given to the out-of-box experience: the user needed to go
through only two steps to set up and connect to the Internet. "There's no
step 3!" was the catch-phrase in a popular iMac commercial narrated by actor
Jeff Goldblum.

Another commercial, dubbed "Simplicity Shootout", pitted seven-year-old
Johann Thomas and his border collie Brodie, with an iMac, against Adam
Taggart, a Stanford University MBA student, with an HP Pavilion 8250, in a
race to set up their computers. Johann and Brodie finished in 8 minutes and
15 seconds, whereas Adam was still working on it by the end of the
commercial.

Apple later adopted the 'i' prefix across its consumer hardware and software
lines, such as the iPod, iBook, iPhone, iPad and various pieces of software
such as the iLife suite and iWork and the company's media player/store,
iTunes.

That 'i' in the name worked out well for Apple but the new watch breaks from
the naming convention. It's the "Apple watch" and not the iWatch. Conpiracy
theories?
