If it only takes 3-5 seconds, I would have to assume that you have a
Core i7 or at least an i5. On my older i3, in Fedora, it took a good ten
to twelve seconds on a cold boot. However, it was limited to that
distribution. Everywhere else, it couldn't have taken more than two or
three.

It the ecosystem were unified as what I suggested, fixing the bug would
be easy. Since it's not, you'll have bugs in one and not the other and
even if the problem is widespread, what works to fix it in one won't
necessarily function in the other.

That is the mess that we know as Linux.

Most everyone here is running old software/hardware.

On my i7-4790S PC, with my top·rated SSD,
the launch is too quick to measure.
Even after rebooting, it's still too quick.

Not at all. Where do you think the hour glass came from?
Solaris has it. I can call gedit file.c & from a terminal and it still
momentarily shows the hour glass, yet I can launch another app while that
hour glass is running. Provided I can type that fast.

When I first started using Gnome I thought "why no animated bouncing,
spinning or dancing cursor?" -- but after about 20 minutes I found that I
liked not having the distraction. It's completely unnecessary. Now I've
been using Gnome/Mate for about eight years and, when I use another OS, I
find the animated cursor weird.

Yeah, it's almost like it is saying "Freeze, baby, freeze! Don't go away!
Wait right there! Almost ready!"

Dear Miss Manners:
I carry a big black umbrella, even if there's just a thirty percent chance of
rain. May I ask a young lady who is a stranger to me to share its protection?
This morning, I was waiting for a bus in comparative comfort, my umbrella
protecting me from the downpour, and noticed an attractive young woman getting
soaked. I have often seen her at my bus stop, although we have never spoken,
and I don't even know her name. Could I have asked her to get under my
umbrella without seeming insulting?

Gentle Reader:
Certainly. Consideration for those less fortunate than you is always proper,
although it would be more convincing if you stopped babbling about how
attractive she is. In order not to give Good Samaritanism a bad name, Miss
Manners asks you to allow her two or three rainy days of unmolested protection
before making your attack.
