Hey GNU/Linux enthusiasts! (Distro lackeys go away.)

My marvelous Gentoo portage machine recently updated glib and
several associated packages.

Then, my equally marvelous Midnight Commander suddenly could not
open files.  WTF!  What was a poor boy to do?

Fortunately, the equally marvelous GNU/Linux community came
to the rescue.  A bug report and solution was already submitted
(a LOT of people use MC):

But the problem is not MC but that fucking glib, which is another
product of the assholic freedesktop.org.

Linus Torvalds, the benevolent dictator of the Linux kernel,
has always enforced the basic dictum: do not break user space.

Indeed, one can be assured that the essential kernel API will
remain unchanged and all software will continue to function
as per usual.

But the fucking assholes at freedesktop.org will only say:
"Fuck you.  We can change the fucking API any time we fucking
please without fucking prior notification."

Those freedesktop.org assholes should be dragged into the
street and beaten with heavy chains.

Distros give one a semblance of what Winblows gives, but in an
ordered, efficient manner, Larry could use the same distro as me, and
have leet status, he just demands something beyond even that, and I
can't stop him from using a Xeon with a hard drive, but I can make fun
of him due to the fact that he's posted transphobic/anal-phobic crap,
and disrespected anything other than his weirdo OS setup.

Who the heck cares if he disrespected pedophiles who dress up as women 
in a Linux group? Larry Pietraskiewicz is an annoying cretin but not one

The Handbook is a gentle introduction to some of the moving parts of Linux.
That's not work. You just took a short course, and followed the collateral
materials.

This is similar to driving an automobile and not knowing how it all works.
Gentoo is opening the hood and seeing the engine for the first time.
And the guided manual tells you "this is the alternator" and "that's
your air conditioning right there".

And, it allows a person to customize a bit, but the added performance
of a trimmed kernel isn't likely to be measurable. I played around
with building the kernel a couple times. Good for a laugh, and you
can see how some kernel selections are complicated (controls may be
in more than one place, forget to go to the second place and
stuff ends up busted).

The first time I set up a Gentoo on a Core2, and set the compiler
directive for a Core2 processor, it "felt" a little faster, but
that could easily be the placebo effect. That particular machine,
the motherboard blew on it, so it's gone. Most of the things I
try on computers now, to make them faster, the lack of a visible
result takes all the fun out of it.

As another aspect, I even set up a distcc so it could do compiles faster by
using my other machine. Which was good for a lark.

But as for making a daily driver from it, you have to keep up
with the rolling nature of the thing. If you put it away for
six months, and enough of the wrong kind of changes happen.

Can't go forward/can't go back/need to set a bias.
I'm not good at figuring those out. If you do your updates
every day, the disturbance a transition in a subsystem makes
is minimal at that point. It's when you neglect your maintenance
you can get in trouble. Other distributions, the penalty for
putting them on the shelf, just isn't the same.

I wouldn't know, I haven't played with Gentoo since 2004 or so. My 
friend suggested it to me and told me that I could get some additional 
performance out of my Duron or whatever I was using, but I didn't see a 
single advantage of using it over Ubuntu.

I once had an Austin-3000-MK-II with them dreaded SU carburetors that 
were, really, mechanical wonders of simplicity and joy for a mechanic. I 
still miss them  ...but they became a horror show when they put 3 of 
them in series, one for each two cylinders. If you didn't know how to 
literally 'tune' them by putting a hose to your ear and quickly 
comparing the pitches made by the rushing air you were eiher in deep 
shit, a regular customer at the corner garage, or the employer of a pro 
which tends to become expensive. The pins would bend every time the 
beast would backfart so it became a weekly chore. I learned how to do it 
alright, but when I first tried gentoo I soon realised that it would be 
another set of SU carburators so I 'let it go' and now just use half a 
dozen other distros instead. It's a resource allocation issue, a minor 
one at that, pure and simple.

Nope. The problem is you because you can't manage your updates. Or maybe
your distro because they didn't test them well before releasing the
updates.

It impressive. Any time you have an issue with your distro, it's the
fault of freedesktop.org for a different product they provide. It looks
like they do a lot of things. And it looks like you managed to install
every product they do on your computer. For someone who claims not to be
a distro lackey able to install everything he wants, it looks like you
choose very poorly what you install. Are you a freedesktop.org lackey?

Maybe they are the only words you can understand, so they adapt.

You should be more careful about your updates. As you compile everything
that comes on your computer, carefully selecting the compiling options,
you should have seen that coming. Or maybe your claims of optimization
are invented as everything else?
