Some? I'd say MOST people neither need nor want a desktop PC.

A desktop PC is also known as a WORKSTATION, i.e. a place for
serious and extensive COMPUTING work, be it document production,
image processing, application programming, scientific simulations,
etc., etc.

The average Joe/Jane just wants instant, no-brainer email and
Facebook. A thumb-drive computer could accommodate those tasks
and that thumb-drive will contain MS Windows.

Microsoft Windows is for brain-dead losers, and they can have it.

Because the average Joe/Jane could not distinguish a logic gate
from a sewer hole in the ground, Microsoft invented the Windows OS
to appeal to such stupidity. MS Windows completely hides the digital
machine and overlays it with various helper devices to serve
as crutches for the mentally lame user. The average Joe/Jane
cannot even edit a simple text file (he/she doesn't even know what
a text file is) and so Microsoft gives him/her configuration
windows with no-brainer check boxes and other such retarded stuff.

Yes, Microsoft is for total idiots, and they can have it.

But there are repercussions for us all.

What I hate the most is the names these Microsoft users give to
the various files they may post. Invariably these file names
contain spaces and punctuation characters. Example: My Picture
of When I Visited My Mom's House & Got Drunk.jpeg.

Hey idiot! Hey dumb-fuck! Don't you understand that digital
file names are not supposed to contain spaces and punctuation
characters? Even though they technically CAN contain them, they
really SHOULD NOT contain them.

Fortunately, for Linux, there are programs which can process these
asinine file names and remove the idiotic junk:

Sanity: http://www.splitbrain.org/projects/sanity

I have to use such programs ALL THE GODDAMNED TIME to restore
a decent form to the file names created by Microsoft idiots.

Yes, Microsoft Windows is for brain-dead assholes, and they can
have it.

Many users also want to edit photos and sometimes even videos, to play
games, to use things like typing tutors or quilt-design programs, to edit
word processing documents - including those with images, to make occasional
fairly simple spreadsheets and maybe even presentations, to play music, etc.

What text file do you mean? Old .ini files? If so, sure, a general user
should never have to see those.

It does not make things as easy and powerful as OS X, at least in many
areas, but it does make things much better for most users than what they had
with, say, DOS!

What makes you think a user has the obligation to back YOUR wishes?

Not only do I use such characters, I also use unicode characters in my file
names. OS X handles it fine. Now I do have to be careful if I am uploading
those to a website or even sharing them with Windows users, but for my own
use I use those as I wish.

OS X comes with software to make file names Windows and web friendly.

Would love to see what type tasks you think your system handles well. Here
are some that were discussed in COLA a while back... the Linux users did not
fare very well.

* From a single online recipe (or art project, lesson plan, whatever) save
it and email a PDF version where you add notes to it. Now I know this can be
done on Linux; save, open, edit, email. Just curious to see how you people
would generally do it and how streamlined the workflow would be. A couple
ways I might: <https://youtu.be/NPM_WldEBs0>.

* Make a video, as Owl and I have been, but with cursor replacement /
resizing (post production), window highlighting, zooming, arbitrary area
highlighting. For me these were done just to show something else:
<https://youtu.be/aSNpnYpmKag>. I have many other options but picked these
because they fit the real-world example I did shortly before coming up with
the "challenge".

* Getting a WayBackArchive page and getting images of all links, the HTML
validation and CSS validation from W3.org, and a active link to the archive
page, as I did here (does not have to look the exact same, of course):

Yeah, Now we are faced with that uniquely Microsoft monstrosity known as
the REGISTRY.

How about that registry, eh? The registry is an inaccessible heap of garbage
that also forms a gigantic weak spot for complete OS failure. Microsoft
deserves a medal for that idea.

Text files or XML are the only way to go for configuration.

Then maybe we could have an OS that wasn't geared for brain-dead morons.

Unicode is OK and recommended. But if you actually use spaces/punctuation
in file names then you have a very poor or non-existent background in computer
programming/scripting. To any worldly and seasoned programmer, spaces/punctuation
in file names is anathema. In the digital world, such behavior is extremely
bad form.

Off the top of my head I do not have an answer for these particular problems.

But I do not doubt that if were actually faced with finding a solution, I could
think a while, do some testing, and come up with extremely efficient methods.

I have done so in the past for many complex problems.

You have yet to say what you think they are doing wrong. Allowing people to
use file names that work for them? Making things easier for people to get
things done? Not sure what your point is.

I am not a fan of the Registry, but users should not have to fiddle with TXT
or XML configuration files. Programs should be written better than that!

Knowing you should learn about computers is a good first step. I commend
you.

You have yet to say how it is. Or OS X. If you watch my videos, though, you
can see where Linux is, if not for, often designed by "brain-dead morons".
:)

In all seriousness: use what you like and there are times when Linux is a
great solution for the desktop. But that is also true of Windows and OS X.
Heck, Windows is a great choice for most users - as is OS X, though it is
priced in a way where it will never have the majority. Desktop Linux, even
being no-cost, has yet to attract any but a tiny sliver of users.

I would love to see the open source ecosystem improve to the point where it
can compete well and earn a larger percentage of user. That would be great
and I have submitted many bug reports to help it move forward.

While I am not a programmer, the fact I might use a folder named "Web
Receipts" is not in any way a bad thing.

You do not have to use such names if you do not want... but nothing wrong
with others doing so.

Fair enough. Would love to see what you come up with over time.

> But I do not doubt that if were actually faced with finding a solution, I
> could think a while, do some testing, and come up with extremely efficient

Would love to see them. But keep in mind part of a great system is it allows
you to do such things with little planning. The print solutions I show, for
example, take almost no planning to do the basics with. I have added a
script so I can change the name of the file I email (would be great if I
could just select it and rename it in Mail, but I cannot). One thing I
really appreciate about OS X is how it is designed to streamline workflows
and give you many choices.

> I have done so in the past for many complex problems.

I am sure... but a good system should not just let you find excellent
solutions to complex problems but also more mundane ones, such as the email
an edited lesson plan task I talk about. I do such things often - heck, did
so today with a home school group I am in. Someone had posted a link to
their own blog with lessons and I sent them a copy with notes on ideas to
improve it. They emailed me back and thanked me - and made some changes to
their blog.

It's not a "folder;" it's properly called a "directory." Since the
beginning of the digital age it's always been called a "directory."

But Microsoft has poisoned the digital ecosystem by unilaterally
flaunting tradition and introducing this dummied-down terminology.

(Yet, like stupid hypocrites, they retained the "dir" shell command.)

Just call the directory "Web_Receipts." Believe me, the difference
is immense.

Folder is a perfectly acceptable term for a GUI representation of a
directory.

Windows does not have such a folder by default that I know of. OS X does.

And here is a discussion on how to use this folder with PDF Services:
<http://lowendmac.com/2014/os-x-tip-save-pdf-to-web-receipts-folder/>

They also discuss a BIG bug, in my view, with what Apple provides - it can
overwrite a file with the same name. OUCH! Bad form Apple. I have updated
mine so this cannot happen with a fairly simple script. Did the same with a
few other folders I use often.

And yet "folder" makes more sense. Files go in file folders, just like
you'd find in any treeware filing system on the planet.

A "folder" is a graphical representation of a container, that can refer to a
filesystem "directory".

"Folder" is a superset of "directory". Directories are filesystem locations, of
which a folder can be a graphical representation of, but a folder can also be
virtual and not related to a filesystem location (think "smart folders" that are
really filesystem queries).

#331790 — Plenty of non-idiots use Windows.

SubjectPlenty of non-idiots use Windows.
Message-ID<Jeff-Relf.Me@Nov.8{9.30P.Seattle.2015}>
In reply to#331783
Fabian_Russell,

To change settings (in the Resigistry)
I edit this _Plain_Text_ file:

   Jeff-Relf.Me/Win_8_.REG.TXT

Registry items can be exported/imported
to/from a text file.
      _______
Copy this line to your browser:

Jeff-Relf.Me/My Biological Son, Jeff Thompson .JPG

It works, and it's easy to read.

But, on Usenet, using underscores (instead of spaces)
makes it easier for people to view/click it; to wit:

  Jeff-Relf.Me/_The_Heisenberg_Uncertainty_Principle_.PNG
      _____
Plenty of non-idiots use Windows, by the way.
Here's some code I wrote for Windows 8:

  Jeff-Relf.Me/X.ZIP

    "X.HTM" is the "help/settings file".
    "Nyms.HTM" is the Usenet Scorefile.
The "xGames" folder has .PNG files for the Monopoly game.
"X.CPP" is the source code, Visual C++, x64, Visual Studio 2015.

"OCR A", "MS Mincho", "DejaVu LGC Sans Mono" and "nSimSun"
are the (required) "Unicode Console" fonts.
If they don't exist, warnings are issued using "Consolas" ( Vista ).

Note: This code needs Windows 8 or later.
3840 x 2160 ScreenShots: "Jeff-Relf.Me/X.PNG", "Jeff-Relf.Me/Chess.PNG".

"DirectX.CPP" is a small (one-file) example of how to:
_ Make all Fonts/Glyphs the same width (double_width is allowed).
_ Rescale Graphics/Glyphs when a window changes size.
_ Use DirectX 11.1, Direct2D 1.1, DirectWrite, and Direct3D.
_ Draw to a back buffer at a high fps (frames per second).
_ Draw properly scaled/smoothed .JPG files, hardware accelerated.
_ Draw to/from/within bitmaps.
_ Discover if a font exists or not ("FindFamilyName()").
_ Discover if a glyph exists in a font ("HasCharacter()").
_ Discover the width/height of a glyph ("GlyphWH()").

Your startup folder should have, e.g., "Pics/LowRes.JPG" ( 100px wide/tall )
and "Pics/Chess.PNG" ( a 3840 x 2160 screenshot, Jeff-Relf.Me/Chess.PNG ).
All coordinates are in hard⋅pixels (D2D1_UNIT_MODE_PIXELS).

ScreenShot: Jeff-Relf.Me/Glyph.PNG

File names containing spaces/punctuation will choke the shit
out of ANY command line parser.

They must either be quoted or escaped.

The point is that in a FUNDAMENTAL DIGITAL SENSE, a file name
is meaningful only w/o spaces.

First, not true, as even you note below. And it really does not matter one
whit given how must users have no need or desire to know what a "command
line parser" is.

> They must either be quoted or escaped.
>
> The point is that in a FUNDAMENTAL DIGITAL SENSE, a file name

So you are making a point which is not in any way true. OK. The challenge
then is for you to figure out how to learn and move past that error, or if
you really think it is a reasonable claim, explain why so many files and
folders with spaces in their names come with computers!

In the end you have a preference. Fine. You are welcome to it. And for some
cases you are correct: things like file names on the web, for example,
should not have spaces.

Then again, when we get to the web we get to case sensitivity... another
whole can of worms. Heck, for the different parts of a URL, and for
different servers, the rules are not always the same! Utter insanity there.
:)

WTF? You get the 'spaces in folder/file names' issue on the web, too, Mr. 'Web Development Teacher'. What kind of crap are you teaching your 'students'?
