Of note: you failed to mention one redeeming quality of desktop Linux.

If you consider that the precursor to the Linux kernel was GNU and that
both, together, comprise what GNU/Linux is today then no, you are wrong
to say that Microsoft's supposed monopoly is why it exists. When GNU was
first created, Microsoft was replaceable and fairly insignificant in the
computing world. Not until 1992 could Microsoft claim to have anything
resembling a monopoly and the kernel's development started before that.
The reality is that GNU and Linux exist as a result of *UNIX* being
proprietary. People wanted to have UNIX power on their home computers
and since this wasn't possible, they decided to develop a clone of it.
Tools on the GNU side, a kernel on the Linux side.

    Again. I said LINUX.

This was something started by a kid that didn't want another marginal
platform like the Dragon but also didn't want to put up with the dreck that
Micrsoft was forcing on everyone.

You're an idiot. DX changed gaming. By having control they didnt have to
deal with the OGL fuddy duddies. MS worked directly with the HW mfrs and
actually advanced things in record time.

Seriously Jed : shut the fuck up. You have NO idea about anything.

There might be more platforms but it would be laughable to suggest BSD
or something like Solaris ever becoming a gaming platform.

Ah, name-calling. Beautiful.

Were you suggesting platforms like iOS and Android? If so, you could
have made it more clear that you weren't referring only to desktop
platforms.

Consoles have been a driving force in the games market for over
a decade. If you are going to blither about something, at least
pretend that you have half a clue about it. Mobile platforms have
also been the new thing. There was movement in this direction even
before the smartphones became big and splashy in the news media.
Like I already said. If you are going to blather baout something, at

Consoles have NOT been the driving force in the games market at all.
They might get great sales because they're generally more affordable
than gaming machines and don't require upgrades but every single gaming
publication will tell you that innovation still starts at the PC level.
Maybe consoles innovate as it relates to control schemes, but the PC's
power still determines what kind of games developers will be able to
make for consoles in the following years.

As for "having a clue" about gaming, you're literally talking to an
expert here. I know the entire history of games, the names behind the
technology and the series, the reasons of the successes and failures of
platforms as well as the technology in each machine. *YOU* clearly don't
know shit in believing that because casual smartphone/tablet games sell
well they'll somehow become a driving force for the games market.
Absolutely NO expert would agree with you on this. In fact, some of the
companies which made fortunes in developing smartphone/tablet casual
games are seeing their profits decrease to the point that they're
scrambling to find the next big thing.

The only idiot here is you. How do you explain the fact that every
single innovation in gaming started on the PC if "consoles have been a
driving force?" The very fact that you call it a DRIVING force
specifically insinuates that innovation starts there regardless of how
you weasel out of in a future post by the way.

On which platform was CD technology first used? Consoles or the PC?
On which platform did real-time strategy games first appear? Consoles of
the PC?
On which platform did the FPS originate? Consoles or the PC?
On which platform did online multiplayer gaming begin? Consoles or the PC?
On which platform was 3D acceleration first used? Consoles or the PC?
On which platform was installing a game onto the hard disk first
allowed? Consoles or the PC?
On which platform was gaming through the Internet first allowed?
Consoles or the PC?
On which platform was digital distribution of games start? Consoles or
the PC?

For every question, the answer is the PC. Unfortunately, you're too busy
pretending that you have knowledge to hide the fact that you're a
complete imbecile and never bothered to research the material?

JEDIDIAH making a complete ass of himself yet again, who would have
imagined?

The industry shifted to consoles a long time ago. The fact that you
can come up with some really ancient examples of "innovation" doesn't really
alter this.

I mean come on... "hard drive installs".

That one is straight out of the 80s.

And it only came to consoles with the original XBOX in 2001. Therefore,
consoles are 20 years behind on capability and 5 years behind on
graphics technology. It's too bad that you know nothing of the subject
and insist on continuing to make an ass out of yourself. You're free to
pinpoint an area where consoles innovated before the PC though. The only
one you can realistically pinpoint is the Wii control mechanism.

And even as far as control systems are concerned, advanced ones
started on the PC as well. I had a friend who once had a complete set
of controls for his flight simulator games. Stick, pedals, controls
etc. Basically just like a real plane.

Far more than just a joystick with a bunch of buttons.

I'm sure the Intellivision JEDIDIAH just spent his life savings on seems
very innovative with its 2 side buttons and keypad with game inserts.
After all, it's the first-ever 16-bit console.

It's way better than the Atari Video Computer System he's been playing
with until last week. Its version of Burger Time is
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better.
