I love how people enjoy paying double or more for hardware which allows
them to do half as much as a typical PC (assuming they never install
anything other than OS X anyway).

I use my iMac because it allows me to do more for less money. What people
are you thinking of where this is different?

I remember when Apple decided to stop installing optical drives
altogether saying that people prefer on-line media now. What I think
that really means is Apple prefers on-line media as long as people are
using iTunes and no longer providing optical drives will encourage that.

You are confusing two issues: I barely use my DVD drive but that does not
push me to use iTunes. Why would it?

You're talking to White Spurt. Only slightly less dumb than turd.

He's obsessed with DVD players for some reason : something you can pick
up for a few dollars if you need it as a portable usb device. My current
favorite laptop is a thinkpad without DVD built in. Why would I need
that extra volume, weight and "thing to go wrong" when I've probably
installed next to nothing form DVD in the last years - but then I do use
Debian and pretty much everything I download using the package manager
or compile from source for, e.g, the wireless chip.

You must remember that White Spurt and wRonG are highly skilled analysts
who know better than Apple what people want.

Even on desktops they are not used by most people. I do have someone in my
extended family who makes home videos and then sends them to people on
DVDs... and I make DVDs for classes and the like. But we are edge cases. And
frankly with an all-in-one I have never liked the placement of the DVD... I
have a second monitor and I have to move it to get to the drive. When I
upgrade my computer I will have the DVD drive on the desk. It will generally
be pushed to the back or plopped in a drawer and not even plugged in.

Would it bother me if they kept it? No. Does it bother me that they removed
it... well, to be honest, when I first heard that I was a bit bothered - but
when I considered it and thought of the reasoning and logic and lack of most
people using them it makes sense.

LOL! Are you two really *this* stupid?!!

C'mon, this has to be an act ;)

You seriously don't believe there were conversations at Apple where the topic of doing things to lock people into buying digital files from iTunes or the App store was the focal point and removing the drive was a key factor in encouraging things to move in that direction? Or are you both *so* brain dead you simply missed his obvious point?

Apple is ahead of the curve on removing tech, due to smaller market share they have much more flexibility in this regard. That said, don't believe for a second that the push to the walled garden wasn't a huge aspect of removing the drive this time out. I'm a Mac user and I'm not that f*cking blind.

I've noticed that as well. By dropping the drive out, it cuts their
manufacturing costs and yet the price is still high.

Yes - it's like those companies who make a product such as washing
powder and then reduce the volume in a container but keep the price the
same hoping that people won't notice.

Can you show me some price comparisons from non-COLA created sources which
show Macs costing more than comparable machines. You *can* find such... but
before you do you will likely find 10 counter examples.

I opened a Chobani yogurt the other day, and it was about 3/4 full. I
sent an email asking why the deception and they babbled about "No price
increases in xx years... 5.3oz is an industry standard blah blah blah"

There's lots of deceptions like that in food packaging, from unrealistic
photos to partially filled containers to ingredient lists.

Another: there are some great sardines made by Wild Planet (best I've
ever had, $1.67 at Costco). To minimize the high cholesterol and fat
and sodium numbers, they claim each 2.8oz (drained) container is 1.5
servings.

That means Walrus 7 will need to eat 20 containers to get to his
required 30 servings at each meal.

Somewhere on the container it probably says "packed by weight".
That's why cereal often only fills 3/4 of the box.

It is deceptive though.

I love sardines!
Great for the heart, cholesterol, omega 3 fats etc.

I never bought a Chobani yogurt until the other day. It looks like they
just kept the old container and started filling it less.

Consumer Reports current issue has 8 pics of food package photos that
barely resemble what's in the box.

Fast food joints do the same.

Yes. And these Wild Planet ones taste as good as they get (they're
packed in olive oil, no mustard or chiles or sauce).

Check 'em out if you have a Costco nearby. They're 6 cans for $9.99 here.

That's a lot. I have around 2 cans a week. I've gotten burned out on
sardines - been eating them since I was a teen.

A good breakfast is a can of sardines and some steamed spinach or
brussel sprouts. I'd rather eat a Cinnabon, of course, but /never do/
because I plan on bashing cola idiots for a long time.

And ironically Walrus and co probably eat Pizza and Jolt Cola for
breakfast and wonder why they're so incapable of movement or getting the
door when their Mom's bring them down a mid morning cheeseburger to the
basement.

They don't when you see them on TV either.

Haven't been to one of those in years.
Mostly poison.

That's a good price.
I get the ones in olive oil.

I remember when Apple decided to stop installing optical drives
altogether saying that people prefer on-line media now. What I think
that really means is Apple prefers on-line media as long as people are
using iTunes and no longer providing optical drives will encourage that.

People DO prefer online media, but I don't believing that any one of
those people will find the omission of an optical drive to be
liberating. The way Apple removed not only the optical drives but also
certain ports people came to rely on is ridiculous. Sure, most people
won't need a VGA port but maybe on one occasions they'll be forced to
connect to something which only works through VGA and they'd appreciate
having it there... and they don't have the time to go out and buy the
adapter. Maybe they DO buy all of their media from iTunes, but maybe
they found a good deal for a CD or DVD they've been looking for all of
their lives and would have appreciated to be able to rip it.

Call me old school but I enjoy having a plethora of ports on my laptop
to make sure that I'm equipped no matter what the situation is.

I wasn't keen to the idea of doing away with the optical drive, so when
I bought my MacBook Pro, I got an external one. In the last 2 years
I've used it 3 times...

Just sayin'!! :)

I use mine a bit more... but I produce DVDs to sell. But that is hardly the
norm and I can get an external for that.

Is that a read/write optical drive?

The ones I saw are read only.

Yes. I've since given it to my son for his netbook so I don't remember
the brand, but it wasn't a major brand and it cost something less than
$40 as I remember. I haven't looked in a long time, but can't remember
seeing a read-only optical drive in lots of years.
