Guess upgrades in the Linux world just don't work quite as well as
the COLA minions keep trumpeting.

Get ready for all the "works for me, must be you" messages from the
LinOloons.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/04/28/ubuntu_power_user_crash/

"Canonical says it is working to fix a problem that's crippling some
Ubuntu PCs after they've been upgraded to the latest version of the
Linux distro."

"According to one Reg reader who has been in contact – and those
manning Ubuntu forums, see here and here – the upgrade breaks the
GRUB bootloader, rendering the machine unbootable."

GRUB bootloader you say?

Where is Peter Kohlmann to tell us that this can't possibly happen.

Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Huh? Peter "world class C programmer" Koehlmann said there are never any
issues with Linux. Amazing I know. But he INSISTED there is never ANY
issues with BSODs after a Linux upgrade. Which is amazing because both
Creepy and I had them with regard to nvidia integration breaking with
kernel updates in Debian.

Years ago that was type common. Grub going is a REAL NIGHTMARE if you
dont know what you're doing. I had to resort to superGrub on more than
one occasion.

http://www.supergrubdisk.org/

But of course that cant really exist can it? Since Kohltard told us it
never breaks. What an arsehole Peter Koehlmann is.

True. When I updated grub has installed on Windows disk and
didn't on Linux disk. So I installed manually and everything
went ok except that on Windows disk now grub loads instead
of windows boot loader. Not that biggy since grub update detects
windows loader no problem...

Yup - I can vouch for that. Why it cant in the first phase I don't
know. But running update-grub (it SHOULD be called grub-update for
obvious reasons) then spots it just fine.

Bullshit, I'm dualbooting Ubuntu 14.04 LTS from SSD and Windows 8.1
update 1 from mechanical HDD (sdb3 partition).

Previously I had to fire up EFI settings (BIOS config) each time I
wanted to boot "the other" OS.

Doesn't apply any longer, since Ubuntu 14.04 LTS *fully* supports UEFI.

I'm booting from GRUB2 as well (was probably written to the MBR of sda
(SSD)). So what? GRUB2 is a much more enhanced bootloader then the
Windows Bootloader anyway. So what's the problem?

Problem is that Ubuntu shouldn't install grub in wrong place.
At least it should ask where to install not to install on
fist disk it finds convenient...
AS I boot from /dev/sdc that would leave my system
unbootable... Fortunately I have installed grub
on sdc before reboot.

Nope, Ubuntu, like every other GNU/Linux distribution, will install
GRUB2 to the drive you tel it to.

I assume you are, like the majority of Linux advocates in COLA an
advanced Linux user, so why didn't you choose a custom installation?
which gives you full control of where to install what. The ability to
attach/change partitions and target drives for GRUB2:

Beside that, if your machine is left "unbootable" you can always boot
your Linux CD/DVD/Thumb Drive to fix it with GRUB2.

It was upgrade from 13.10 to 14.04. It didn't ask where to put grub.

I have heard problems similar to this in regards to an upgrade.
Maybe the best policy is to save all your work to a dvd and then just do
a clean install.

Those problems are *extremely* rare, and only for a very limited number of

Actually, I have in more than 15 years using linux never had a linux setup

The Mint team suggests you start from scratch with every upgrade - which
happens every 6 months. That really is pathetic.

IMHO copying data to a cheap external USB HDD is a better option and
storing your data on a separate /home partition is even better.

The latter will preserve your personal settings.

I had one. But it also had a lot of weirdo programs installed that
weren't from repositories of the distro I used and updated.

I've had others fail to boot (not due to hardware). But those were all
because I monkeyed with things I shouldn't. And I knew it might screw
everything up as well. But that was sorta the point to my messing with
them in the first place.

I've had it happen on OpenSuse 12.3 ... I really don't know why it
wouldn't reboot... it started the reboot process but it just sat there.
???

I still think that VMs aren't that safe in this regards. VirtualBox.

Indeed.

If you have your data on a separate /home partition, it should be ok.
Otherwise back up to an external USB drive.

I had *one*, but that turned out to be a co-incidental hardware failure.
The HDD failed on which I had a Linux distro installed.
But I cannot recall where an upgrade of a Linux distro I was using, was
directly responsible for a boot failure.

Well, if your setup still doesn't suit your needs, you can always
install Grub Customizer from your favorite package manager and change
the settings to suit your needs.

Don't worry, be happy ;-)

Assuming you can get your system to boot which is the title of the
