Switching to cable for TV and internet in the new house. Called last week to have hookup. Chose preferred dates 4/22, 4/23. No communication over the weekend. Called Monday to verify. Could not find info, then found it, said dates not available. First available 4/24. OK. 4/24 it is then. Scheduled other workers at the house today. Here comes the *cable* guy. He doesn't know anything about the change in service date. Starts working. I wanted six boxes. Needed one line run, as house already had cabling in the other rooms. "We don't drill in the floor. You'll need an electrician for that." WTF? I've had cable and satellite installers drill all over the fucking place for decades. So after several foreign call center catastrophes, I finally get ahold of an American in chat. Got everything resolved I guess, but get this: I wasn't at the house when the guy came. My wife was there with the other workers. Cable guy is some spook with a foreign accent (in person even!). The guy at one point reached out and removed my wife's sunglasses from her face! If I had been there at the time, I'd be in jail right now for a violent "hate crime." But damn, the worst was the three call centers I had to deal with. Complete fucking morons.

Doesn't it make you want to disconnect your cable entirely and just rely on a cheapo antenna? When my cable company had an outage in my area on September 5th two years ago, it affected both my Internet and TV obviously. I had already thought about cutting them off but when that happened, I went ahead and did so. Relied on antenna alone for the next 8 months. I'd still only be using that if the new ISP I chose hadn't fucked me over and forced me to go to another company to choose a bundle which included TV reception. If you're in a heavily populated area of the United States, I would imagine that you would get a crapload of channels with an antenna and wouldn't actually need the cable hookup at all. -- Silver Slimer Wikipedia & OpenMedia Supporter

I currently have Time-Warner. They aren't great, but they're a far sight better than Comcast. That'll end once Comcast assimilates them. My sister-in-law (in Atlanta) has Comcast. She says she's afraid to call them about anything because it always ends up with her being billed for things she didn't agree to, and it takes her months to straighten it out. Even longer to get the false "past due" bills fixed. I've been waiting and waiting and waiting for Google to start putting in fiber here. But as part of their "don't be evil" schtick, they started putting it in and near the hood first. They're finally near my area, and should start in my neighborhood soon. -- Excuse my English. Most of the area where they started is blighted, meaning little or no business and a lot of vacant property, drug houses, etc. It might make some sense if they offered it free to the people living there. Provided they also offered free equipment to use it. The people there can get a modem for $300 at $25/month. Then the service is free for 3 years. But it's $120 a month if they want TV added on. More expensive than lower-end cable, although they'd get a lot more from the fiber link. Still, I don't think there has been a groundswell to sign up in the area. It's not a total loss, though. Google is going to provide it at no cost to schools. Not sure about the details, whether that will be internet- only or also includes some TV connection for educational videos or whatever. However, the free connection applies across the board, including the wealthier places in the area. >>They're finally near my area, and should start in my neighborhood soon. > > You're lucky. I don't expect fiber anywhere near my home, in my > lifetime... I get at least 10 notices a year to sign up because they're starting "soon" in "your area." I've signed up every time. The last one sounded more serious than the previous ones, so maybe this time for sure. They're finally within a couple of miles from me. But they could still jut east or west and come back to where I live "later." Meaning it might barely be in my lifetime, -- Excuse my English. I went to US public school.
