#330418 — A Linux Professional to Linux fans and enemies

FromBob Loblaw <BL@LinuxProfessionals.com>

SubjectA Linux Professional to Linux fans and enemies
Message-ID<2015110213491266537-BL@LinuxProfessionalscom>
Linux is the best OS or amongst the best OS's for a lot of things.

Databases, servers, many embedded systems, ... a long list of
applications where Linux does great and is the number one choice for
good reason. It's the OS of almost every TOP500 supercomputer running
today inlcuding all of the top 10.

But the one area where it is an abject useless stinkpile of garbage is
office or home desktop environments. It's not just the plethora of
competing horribly ugly Linux desktop environments but the utter lack
of support from mainstream software publishers to provide their high
quality wares to a tiny sliver of the market.

I utterly hate Windows and the company that shall not be named that
publishes that monstrosity and its companion apps. But Windows is
superior to Linux as a desktop environment. Ouch! That pains me.

Linux is so rotten as a desktop environment that people would rather
face the legal risks of installing bootleg versions of Windows than
legally installing free Linux distros!

OS X is obviously the superior *nix where desktop is concerned. It
exudes competent design in every detail - and it is so well designed
for ordinary users that the most computer averse grandmother from
Numbnuts, Arkansas can use it, configure it, update it, manage it and
even correct issues that occur. I, a Linux professional programmer,
administrator and entrepreneur use OS X even to develop for Linux.
It's that simple fanbois. Linux desktop is utter tripe in all its
myriad forms. Embarrasing actually. Every time I'm forced by
circustance to load a Linux desktop I find the entire experience
cringeworthy.

Even with with Apple on its knees in the late 90's and early 2000's,
the Linux "movement" could not take on the expensive Windows near
monopoly with a free *nix and desktop environment. Even with Apple's
expensive computers and often expensive companion software Linux
desktop could not take over a market despite being given away for free
and usable on the cheapest, skankiest hardware out there.

Linux fanbois keep on embarrassing Linux professionals with the
cesspool nonsense notion that Linux is a viable desktop alternative to
Windows.

It hasn't. It isn't. It won't be. Get over it Fanbois and please stop
embarrassing the rest of us.

LOL - "most home users" with the exception of turdv, his family, his
employer, his friends and his neighbors.

In other words he or anyone in his family don't use Linux, never have and
never will. But "most users" should switch to Linux from Windows just
because he says so.

Round about 2005 or so my neighbor dragged me over to show me how he
was free from the shackles of that co. I really don't want to mention.

All by his lonesome (not the most expert of computer users) he
installed a Linux disto (Mandrake IIRC).

It worked fine and he managed to install Open Office and some other
apps. He managed to get his mail working. With my help (aha! that's
what the invitation was all about) he networked it to his PC. (My help
was on the PC side and took a while to figure out).

So then he was really rolling in the mud. He started copying all his
PC stuff over to the Linux side. A happier guy I've never seen.

Anyway some months go by and I run into him and ask him how his Linux
system was working out.

Oh. That.

Turned out that for various reasons he couldn't use it for work without
issues. He couldn't get his kids to use it for schoolwork. He had
some issues with a driver he couldn't get to install at all. It was a
disappointment to him.

I'd like to say he got a Mac, but no, he eventually scrapped the joy of
Linux and went back to Windblows.

But. He. Was. Happy. And. Productive.

+1. We've all done what he has. None of the supposed "wintrolls" here
really hate Linux and we all wanted to believe that there was a decent
alternative to Windows. Some of us even made ourselves believe that
using Linux was more liberating than using Windows. Once it became clear
that it was a mess and that it imprisoned us more than Windows would, we
moved away. I'm now a proud Windows user and will probably never, ever
migrate away from it.

At least the motivated and informed have a choice, which is far better
than nothing. But yes, most of the sheep are afraid of leaving the
flock.

M$ will continue to dominate the desktop, but the desktop is becoming
only a niche of the overall computing market.

Nothing at all. WinXP at that time needed some tinkering in the
registry in order to play nice with a linux box on an ethernet network.
Took a while to figure out what the issue was but once identified was
trivial to fix. If you need the specifics I can probably find them
quickly enough.

I'm willing to eviscerate Windows as much as the next guy but I've
never had to do crap like that.

[deletia]

I'm not sure you're competent to operate Windows or Linux.

Then you're fortunate, aren't you? It was the only time I recall doing
something like that. Perhaps someone had munged the value in question
(a buffer size or some such).

Sure am and much more - back to VM on 370's and a slew of mainframe,
mini and micro OS's in between. Programming mind you, not merely
"operating".

It's happened to virtually every single person who has tried desktop Linux.
After the honeymoon phase wears off, the user realizes how much Linux sucks
and moves back to Windows or OSX.
It's only the religious, zealot cult members who have convinced themselves
that Linux is superior. And I suspect even they know they are just kidding
themselves. It's only a matter of time before they switch back too.

Rinse and repeat.

Absolutely. I've since come to realize that while it makes sense to
support free software alternatives like LibreOffice and VLC, it makes no
sense to use an entire operating system made up of it. It isn't stable,
it isn't intuitive, it isn't pretty and it isn't capable. It truly is
nothing more than a waste of time.

Linux is fine. It's the horrible desktop environment and next to
useless in the real world apps that kill it.

I'm sorry to say that LibreOffice is really (in the real business
world) pretty useless because they mostly use Orifice products (which I
do as well ... just not LookOut!). Having to deal with minor
formatting issues is a major waste of time.

Sure is.
And if you don't have a copy of MSOffice to test with, you will never know
how well your documents translate when sent to others who are most likely
using MSOffice.

It could range from embarrassing to very expensive should it be a legal
document.

Just irritating/embarrassing so far. Time wasters. Time is money.

And yes, many are legal documents (contracts, agreements and so on).
But no major damage. It's been years though.
