There seems to be a boatload of Steam machines getting reading for release in November... ... just in time for the Xmas shopping season...

Great sales will result in a greater number of games coming out for Linux. Low sales will simply result in companies which have already sworn to port games to Linux cancelling their projects. I would love to see more Linux native games. It would make switching a lot easier for me. -- A.M

Well, Windows is what I'm using right now and most of it has to do with the fact that I bought a lot of games over the years and haven't yet completed them. Besides, my favourite stuff comes from Electronic Arts and they're exclusive to Windows. However, I would be willing to sacrifice that if it meant that I could support an operating system whose philosophy (if nothing else) I'm more compatible with. -- A.M

I prefer to run games on Linux because of superior sound routing capabilities. pulse and pavucontrol have made streaming much more flexible. Windows 7 can't even come close to it, even when adding the 3rd-party app "chevolume". One reason we're seeing so many Linux ports is due to Mac ports -- porting an app to the Mac with OpenGL is 99% of the battle. That's why we got Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: TPS -- same company that did the Mac port did a tweak here and there, and now we have them on Linux, too. Rinse, repeat. -- -v Kernel:4.1.5-sd Desktop:Xfce 4.12.2 Distro:Linux Mint 17.2 Rafaela

I set up an Ubuntu system to display a dashboard in our workshop using Dashing. That works fine. When I wanted to route audio from the radio via the 3.5mm input and send it to the big screen it was a nightmare and still doesn't work. I kept Dashing running on the machine I had installed in on and set up a Windows desktop to display the web page. A few clicks and audio was routed the way I wanted it. Like I've always said, Linux for servers, Windows for Desktop

Agreed, but it seems that the Apple is not too interested in transforming their operating system into a gaming platform just yet and that is having a direct effect on whether companies decide to port over to Linux as well. Clearly, migrating a game to both Linux and the Mac allows a company to gain access to another 10% of customers (adding up the marketshare of both platforms) but Linux alone is not important enough (from a business perspective) for them to make the effort. However, the sound capabilities you're mentioning are only beneficial for people who intend to run an older game under a newer operating system. You, for instance, mentioned Fallout 3 are being incompatible with XP but quite compatible with Linux. These examples are quite few and far between so I'm not entirely sure whether it is a problem everyone faces. If you have more examples, I'd be interested in hearing them. Since users of Windows 10 are generally only interested in the latest games which run perfectly in the operating system, it might actually end up being a non-problem regardless of how great the older titles are. For me, Linux's benefits are much more pronounced in the area of supporting older hardware which people might not be ready to discard rather than older games. The fact that I can run my 2003 scanner (which is more than enough for my needs) in Linux but can't in Windows 10 is a gigantic point in Linux's camp. I _COULD_ spend an extra $100 and just get newer hardware which DOES work in Windows 10 but as someone who wants to reduce waste, I don't consider that option to be ethical. -- A.M

I don't like all of the DRM nonsense that comes with Windows games.
Admittedly, Steam is also DRM but it's not nearly as intrusive as the
usual crap that comes with big studio non-Steam titles.
I also don't appreciate game makers thinking they have free run
of my system. A game needs to be able to work and play well with
others (just like multi-gig file transfers).

Fixating on DirectX is really living in the past. The proliferation of
non-PC platforms means that there are fewer game developers out there
married to DirectX or anything else thats Windows only. Macs are part of that
but not the only part.

I do see myself using Linux going forward, especially since the novels I'm writing will all be released using the Creative Commons and because I am a member of the EFF, but it's not something that I envision doing just yet. I'd like to develop my reputation as a free author to develop before I make such a significant move. -- A.M

How did DirectX 12 become a must have thing before game developers even began supporting it, or drivers were available?

Well, I already produced the dxdiag results showing that *MY* Windows 10 uses DirectX 12. I can produce a screenshot for you if necessary. As far as I know, DirectX 12 is only available for GPUs which already support DirectX 11. I assume that whatever you have doesn't. However, you would be correct in insinuating that at the moment, the availability of DirectX 12 is producing no benefits whatsoever. It will allow future games to make better use of resources and improve framerates for everyone but I don't think that we will see games which utilize it until at least mid-2016. -- A.M

Phoronix is fair with these sorts of things and these benchmark results are pretty typical. There's "side-by-side" videos all over the web as well that were posted by gamers. http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=win10-nv-ubu1504&num=2 Only 10% might not sound like much... computers are already very fast. But these are the people who add water-cooling to their CPU so they can overclock it by a few percent. These are people who are willing to spend close to a $1000 for a video card so a few percent faster is significant to them. I don't play games other than flight simulators and those aren't really games anyway.
