I had my numbers ripped in Venezuela ending up in two transactions
totaling around $10K on my MC a few years ago. The card number was used
at a casino somewhere in the Antilles. MC called me up with three
suspicious transactions.

The Israeli VISA franchisee gives you the option of setting a secret word
which they include in an SMS to your cell phone every time the card is used.
Each SMS is set to return dial you to customer service if the transaction
was not done by you.

After the recent release of Israeli credit card numbers by a "hacker",
I received an email telling me to sign up for the service or they would
not allow me to do online buying. I ignored it assuming it was a phishing
email, and they sent me a real letter on paper through the mail.

Still not 100% trusting, I went to their website and found the page,
and did not type in and click on the link in the letter. I did this because
the "hacker" released addresses along with credit card numbers and
security codes.

Geoff.

Every so often some company I have never heard of phones me or e-mails me
asking me for my credit card details. They get a NO from me as I do not
give my credit card details to companies that say I have a discounted
holiday or there has been a mistake in an order on my credit card, or some
other reason.

They don't get a "no" from me; they don't get anything from me, and their
email gets marked as spam. If mail.app already marked it as spam, I don't
even see it.

I get phone calls that claim to be from my credit card company and hang up
immediately. Some might actually BE from them, but I still hang up.

Are you afraid that the spammers may be employing hypnotists?

I get genuine calls from my credit card company asking to verify
charges they think are suspicious. Usually the charges are
legitimate, but not always. They don't have to ask me for my card
number, SS number or anything else to verify the charges.

If they find suspicious charges, and can't verify them, then they stop
the card I think. Which would be annoying, so I don't want to hang up
on them.

If I don't answer, they leave a message asking me to call the credit
card company at the number on the back of my credit card.

But I think if I just hung up on them (repeatedly) the results would
be annoying to me.

That's a senible strategy of course (though it wouldn't work for
Erilar since he hangs up on them immediately).

But is it necessary? What my credit card company does is identify
themselves and then asks if my name is indeed what it is, and then
asks me if I've the charge for amount $X at merchant Y is legitimate.

How does my answer to such a question give someone who _isn't_ my
credit card company any opportunity to scam me?

I hang up automatically most of the time on robot calls, and apparently did
recently when they decided not to honor the second payment from the same
company I'd told them last time was a valid charge, so they sent me an
e-mail. I wanted to also tell them I was going to be out of the country
myself next week, but I couldn't escape the robot taking fraud calls and
had to call again and play solitaire until a human was available.

Apparently anything foreign except Lufthansa, even a company I've told them
before is valid, triggers the stop.

They had a special number connected only to a robot.

Bingo. When they don't ask for any information about you or the card,
but merely ask of the $50,000 charge at the yacht-rental agency in
Monte Carlo is legit or not, then you know that they are legit.

I think that the key to remaining secure is to be aware that no
legitimate financial institution will *ever* phone you and ask you for
your card number &c. They will ask for this information and for other
bona fides if you phone them, however.

Yes it does. When you use the iTunes store Apple stores your CC info.
So the card is virtually in place at Apple and accessible via your iPad
and can be charged to via the password you set.

However, the card the store has access to isn't my usual
ridiculously-high-limit CC, but a debit card with a Do Not Allow

Comes to the same thing. One would be hard pressed to spend a lot of
money quickly at the iTunes store, even with Apps. And while Apple
aren't shouting it out, they do resolve charge issues to the customer's
favour - albeit not quickly (can take a week - 10 days).

As to Apple / iTunes security, I trust it. And if my CC info leaks out
and there are charges I have no fear that my bank will cover it. How my
bank works that out with Apple doesn't concern me.

So far I have not found a way to way to contact Apple about purchases made
on iTunes. I accidentally downloaded the same app twice (the second time it
an app was for the iPhone) and wanted to try and cancel the transaction.
Also I wanted to report faulty apps that I have brought on iTunes. Once
they have your money them maybe they don't care anymore.
