I'm battling back from disaster-- almost all my apps on the iPad were wiped
clean of all data somewhere in the middle of the nasty battle with a new
computer with the worst OS I've ever had to deal with: Yosemite. I now have
to clear away the old posts here to get up to date before I leave home on
my yearly trip combo and have only Newstap on the iPad with me.

only because itunes asked if you wanted to delete them and you said
yes. you apparently did not migrate the old system to the new computer,
so itunes saw it as a different computer.

Indeed. It doesn't happen by accident, and it's their fault they did not
transfer or backup the old iTunes data (it sounds like).

It WAS migrated by someone much more capable than I, but I did something
wrong on the backup attempt.

The point is someone (you or your "more capable" helper) caused your
data to be erased from the iPad by answering "yes" to the question "This
will delete all data from your iPad. Are you sure?" It's not something
that just happens on its own.

It's remarkable how defensive the iCrowd gets about catastrophes. I've
lost things and it's awful. Since I'm a computer engineer, I have the
knowledge to indulge my obsession with backups. For (computer) laymen,
the loss of data varies from a PITA to life-changing crisis.

Erilar, you have my sympathy.

Sympathy, perhaps (although less rush would probably have helped), but
you certainly can't blame the software when you do something silly or
don't bother to properly read the question messages it asks - that's
purely "user error".

That was not among the Yosemite and Pages problems I spent the morning on

Catastrophes caused by idiocy that are blamed on the computer, yes.

> I've lost things and it's awful.

So have I. I once erased many TB of data with amispalced space in a
backup script. While transfering another chunk of TB of data from a
failing drive to a backup, both drives went tits up. It's not fun.

Right, but with proper backups you should never lose much data at all.

In this case there is a backup, but E-wassit seems to not want to talk
about why s/he/it is not using it and also claims it doesn't contain any
data, only apps. Which is absurd.

This is why it is important to back up to more than one location.

Eschew single backups.

itself."

As a computer engineer I would have thought such disasters were entirely

That depends on how stupid you are. I have a friend who has a twenty
year old Mac that holds some data that she thinks is invaluable. The
kink is, she forgot the password and can't get into it. For twenty years.

The same person, proud of her keyboard shortcuts, intended to blow away
a folder by <Shift Del>, eliminating the copy to the recycle bin.
Instead, she hit <some more keys plus Shift Del> and blew away the
entire branch _except_ the folder she had selected. Of course, she could
have recovered them with any number of file recovery tools but she
didn't know how.

_Nobody_ should ever do <Shift Del>. The recycle bin covers a multitude
of errors.

Paul

My personal favourite was always people who used the Trash/Recycle Bin
as storage for files they wanted out of the way, but still accessible,
with the inevitable disaster following.

i know someone who when visiting a client, first empties their trash.

if they bitch, he lectures them about storing real stuff in the real
trash can.

his clients no longer use it as storage.

If it were me, I would no longer use him for service. Even though I
agree with his point of view, what he does is mean and nasty, and can
even hurt someone who *doesn't* use it for storage, but wants to get
back something that was deleted.
