Ah. I thought you were referring to my typo with the apostrophe.
Anyways, I tried "Walgreens" name by itself and got App Store's app
detail link, Wikipedia's detail link, "Search Web" option, and "Search
Wikipedia" option as my Spotlight search results but no near by
locations like Siri's results that someone mentioned.

The first result I get is the Maps app showing nearby Walgreens (1.9
miles)

Interesting. I never get these map results from Spotlight. Hmm. It is
about three/3 miles away. I wonder if there is a distance limit?

That's not what we are talking about. We are talking about typing the
command into a Spotlight search *rather* than asking Siri by voice.

Actually not quite. We are talking about getting the same "intelligence"
that is provided by Siri by typing in the question instead of saying it
out-loud.

The initial suggestion was to use "Spotlight". But I believe that even
you had to admit that Spotlight did not provide the same level of
intelligence in searching as is provided by Siri. So spotlight is NOT an
equivalent to Siri.

I don't think anyone ever said Spotlight (or Google, etc.) was "an
equivalent" to Sili. Simply that you can use those other services to
perform searches without needing to talk to the device and the hopeless
speech "recognition".

Correct. The reason I suggested the OP give Spotlight a try is that many
of the commands you can issue to Siri are commands that can be fulfilled
by Spotlight. For instance if I want to launch an app with Siri, I
typically just say the name of the app. If I instead type the name of an
app in Spotlight, I can launch the app from the resulting search
results. Naturally, I am aware and acknowledge that not all commands
accepted by Siri can be issued in Spotlight. But without much of an
indication of which commands the OP wanted to type, I simply made the
suggestion that he give Spotlight a try to see if it would serve his
needs. I never claimed Spotight is a complete Siri replacement, as JF
Mezei is suggesting.

No, the initial suggestion was to *try* to use Spotlight in an attempt
to see if the particular commands the OP was interested in issuing
would work that way. Nobody here suggested that it would absolutely work
for every command that might be issued.

I never claimed that. And I'm not surprised that's how you want to spin
it.

Sili ... err, Siri *is* speech recognition, so there's little point in
trying to control without speech ... just use the web browser and
Google and the iOS device's normal touch input if you don't want (or
can't) use silly Siri.

Siri allows formulating of simple searches with the Siri engine then
generating search results from different sources of information
(weather, cinemas, traffic maps, google, dictionary, airplane positions
etc.

There is no equivalent textual search engine. So being able to enter the
same search in text instead of words makes sense. (if in an elevator,
meeting, very noisy place etc).

When would anyone ever want to search for the same word / phrase in ALL
those places at the same time?!?

> There is no equivalent textual search engine.

Actually, there are. Spotlight on the Mac (for example) searches many
different places.

Just wait for Bili ... err, Biri which reads your thoughts, then you
can be a Siri Biri. ;-)

So does Spotlight on iOS.

Which is why I asked what commands Ant wanted to make. I wonder if he'll
ever answer.

But you can't just say 'go to town-name' and have it
direct you to there like you can with siri.

Spotlight:

what planes are flying overhead

result: choose from Web or Wikipedia. Choose "Web", I get standard
google search that suggests I download an app to get that info.

Sorrt, but Siri is far more complex/evolved than Spotlight.

Result: Siri says, "8:52pm"

Result: Siri says, "There is a $5 overhead for frying on the plains."

Result: Siri responds that there's no internet connection
        ("I'm sorry Dave, I can't do that.")

That's because Spotlight knows there's no useful reason to know what
planes are flying overhead ... unless you're a geeky plane spotter.
;-)

> Sorrt, but Siri is far more complex/evolved than Spotlight.

And "Sorrt" is probably what Siri heard you say because your accent
wasn't "perfect" middle American.

You found an edge case.

A lot of the commands people issue to Siri are relatively simple ones
though. Ant has been unwilling so far to tell us what types of things he
wants to do with Siri by entering them as text, so it's hard to tell if
a Spotlight search would do what he wants.
