As you noted, it doesn't seem to work reliably. Most of the time when I tried, it went to my Gmail inbox in Safari (if signed in; or asked for a login if I wasn't signed in). This hardly seems a useful feature as it is unpredicatable whether it will work. It also violates your "no saving the document in the cloud to open it" rule. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

Hi David, I do appreciate your information above, because I wasn't exactly sure what those particular URLs were (since I had never seen them before). > As you noted, it doesn't seem to work reliably. Most of the time when I > tried, it went to my Gmail inbox in Safari (if signed in; or asked for a > login if I wasn't signed in). It is weird. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's the starting point that is very sensitive, or, maybe it's something that has a time period involved (e.g., maybe a cookie expires or something). > This hardly seems a useful feature as it is unpredicatable whether it > will work. Well, it's not actually for me, so, as long as it works (even it it takes a dozen tries), that will solve the question for the person who asked me. > It also violates your "no saving the document in the cloud to open it" > rule. The person who asked me (and who sent a test document) does not have desktop or laptop computers. She only has the iPads. She probably doesn't care that things are stored on the cloud, so, in this case, it's probably OK. However, as you surmised, if it was something that I regularly needed to do, putting a document on the cloud just so that I could open it in Word would be the last approach I would take. Anyway, I think the following is clear now (which wasn't clear before); 1. Apple Mail does it correctly. 2. Google Mail does NOT do it correctly. 3. Google Mail is a pain but it can be done. 4. But, it seems to involve temporary storage on the cloud. I don't know, but I suspect Google wanted to do it this way, and they specifically prevented a simple sharing directly to Word or Pages on the iPad (and presumably also on the iPhone). So, it's Google's fault. Not yours. Not mine. And not the iPad.

In that case, doing it via Google Drive (as I suggested in my previous post) seems far more reliable. Tap the Google Drive icon on the attachment to save it, then switch to the Google Drive app to access the saved document and open it in another app. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

If the google drive is required for the temporary file storage, isn't what I came up with EXACTLY the same thing as you had previously suggested? Or, for the temporary open-in-safari method, is there no need for Google drive? (I'm confused.)

They are different mechanisms. The Open in Safari method (while viewing the document in the Gmail app) appears to be saving a temporary copy of the document in a private location on Google's servers. The Save to Google Drive method saves a persistent copy of the document in the user's own Google Drive storage, which can be opened at any time using the Google Drive app (or from the Google Drive web interface, or other methods). This one is activated by tapping the Google Drive icon on the attachment thumbnail in the mail message, not from the page where you view the content of the attachment. > If the google drive is required for the temporary file storage, > isn't what I came up with EXACTLY the same thing as you had > previously suggested? No, because the Open in Safari method: 1. Doesn't store the document in the user's own Google Drive (you can't see it in the Google Drive file listing). 2. Doesn't work reliably. The Google Drive method does. > Or, for the temporary open-in-safari method, is there no need for > Google drive? Probably, but I expect that every Google account used for Gmail automatically has an associated Google Drive, so it isn't a question of "needing" Google Drive, but rather whether the open in Safari method uses Google Drive, which it appears it does not. > > (I'm confused.) -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

Thank you for clearing that up, as I wasn't sure if the step of saving to the Google Drive was necessary, or not. So, it seems that the "open in safari", from what you said, creates only a "temporary" copy, which, perhaps, is why it's a bit flaky in that a good portion of the time it opens in Safari, while another good portion of the time, the Google log in web page appears instead. I have provided this information to the person who had asked me, so, it's fine now, and even I can use it as I do a LOT of reviewing of kids' college papers lately in my family. Thanks for your kind help. Almost always, we find a way to do what may not be obvious, but which is useful to know how to do. Opening a word document attachment from Gmail to Word is one of those things that isn't obvious how to do; but it's useful to know how.

Thanks for clarifying the fact the Open-in-Safari method doesn't use Google Drive. I'm new to this act of temporarily saving a file to some unknown location just so that we can then open it in Word. Do you think that unknown location is local? Or on the net?

Or on the net? It is clearly on the net - the Gmail app is supplying a URL to Safari which involves the domain name mail-attachment.googleusercontent.com, and Safari is going to that URL to access the document. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

Drat. Thanks. So, in summary, there are at least two ways to solve the problem of receiving a Word document in the Gmail iOS app and then opening that attachment in Microsoft Word (or Pages). Both methods involve saving the attachment to the net, and then opening it the attachment in an Apple application (i.e., Safari) and only *then* being able to open it in Microsoft Word. On the other hand, if one uses the Apple Mail app, the attachment can be opened directly in Microsoft Word, without the need to send it to the net first. I'd say, in this case, the Apple iOS apps are behaving quite nicely (they just work) while the Google Gmail app stinks. It's almost as if Google doesn't want you to open the document from anywhere other than from a Google net location.

Wow... For your own sake, please learn to use that brain you must have somewhere in your head. GMail is "on the net" to begin with; so it's not like the document has to go anywhere else - it's already "on the net"! -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. How's this for irony: Just after we've finally got you to understand the problem with the Gmail app and the potential solutions, Google released an update to the Gmail app today, which among other things adds support for the standard iOS share sheet, allowing attachments to be opened directly in other apps, without saving another copy of the attachment online. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

Whoa! Thanks for finding that breaking news... Gmail for iOS Updated With Quick Actions, Share Sheet and Attachment Viewer http://www.macrumors.com/2015/03/05/gmail-for-ios-version-4-0/ https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gmail-email-from-google/id422689480?mt=8 "New attachment viewer - Open attachments from Gmail into any app" Gmail for iOS now lets you archive and reply to email from notifications http://www.theverge.com/2015/3/5/8156185/gmail-ios-8-update "Google says it's added a new attachment viewer, which lets you "open attachments from Gmail into any app." Go figure.

I just tried it, and it works perfectly. 1. Press on attachment icon in the Gmail iOS app. 2. At the top right is the typical bluebox-arrow share icon. 3. Press that Share icon. 4. Up comes a selection menu to open in Pages, Word, etc. If only we knew ...

Hi Michelle, I'm gonna be nice from now on (start the timer!). Yes, I agree. You and everyone else was totally correct, and I sincerely mean that. I don't mind admitting when I'm wrong, especially when I learn how to do that which I'm trying to do. In this case, the Google Mail app (red M on a white background) forces us to upload all our Microsoft Word attachments to the net (either temporarily or to Google Drive, depending on the method used) - just so that we can open the attachment in Microsoft Word (to see the embedded correction comments). That's bad. Very bad. On the other hand, the Apple apps "just worked". That is, if the mail was received in the Apple Mail app, there was absolutely no problem opening that Word attachment in Word (or Pages). So, I repeat. The Apple apps (Mail & Safari) just worked. The Google app (Gmail app) stinks (for this purpose).

Not only does the Google approach (which requires an upload to the net) stink compared to the Apple approach (which just worked), but, the stinky poo Google approach didn't even work all the time. I repeat: 1. The Apple tools (Mail & Safari) just worked. They easily opened a Word attachment in Word. 2. The Google Gmail app stunk! It's cumbersome, at best, insecure at worst, and inefficient at all times when it came to opening a Word attachment in Word.
