Yes, I know that. It was intended to be a sarcastic dig at Adair's
paranoia about storing files on the Internet, despite the fact that
we're talking about an email attachment here.

While you might not realize that "storage" bits are different than
"communication" bits, the fact is, that, in the USA, they are different.

In fact, a communication "bit" that is less than 180 days old has a more
stringent level of protection than that same communication bit when
it is 180 days old, or more.

What you may not realize is that the microsecond you "store" that
communication bit on the net, it's INSTANTLY less protected, because
it's "storage", and not "communication".

Same bits. Big difference.

You're talking a lot of nonsense. A bit is simply a unit of measurement
- there are 8 bits in a byte - and has virtually no relevance to the
topic at hand. Servers on the net don't make any distinction between the
types of data stored in bits - it's all just data. Mail and attachments
stored on IMAP servers on the net have the same protections regardless
of how long it is stored there.

actually, he isn't talking nonsense, although his explanation is.

what he's referring to is that email stored on a server for 6 months or
more is considered abandoned and no longer has the same protections.

more here:
<http://www.wired.com/2011/10/ecpa-turns-twenty-five/all/1>
During the Reagan administration, e-mail more than six months old was
assumed abandoned, and that¹s why the law allowed the government to
get it without a warrant. At the time, there wasn¹t much of any
e-mail for the authorities to acquire because a consumer¹s hard drive
‹ not the cloud ‹ hosted their inbox.

But technology has evolved dramatically following EPCA¹s passage.
E-mail often remains stored on cloud servers indefinitely, in
gigabytes upon gigabytes. That means the authorities may access gigs
of e-mails, or other cloud-stored content, without warrants if it¹s
older than six months. The law, believe it or not, still considers as
abandoned any e-mail or other files housed on servers for more than
  six months.

however, it's also irrelevant, because if someone is sending an email
attachment, it will be downloaded within hours, maybe a day. it can
also be encrypted.

It's not irrelevant if the e-mail and attachment remain on the server
(in the so called cloud) for over 6 months and then are considered
abandoned for government snooping purposes. Encryption of the original
e-mail (enclosing the attachment) would defeat that.

(Is that 6 months law still on the books?)

Using the most convoluted wording possible, as usual.

> what he's referring to is that email stored on a server for 6 months or
> more is considered abandoned and no longer has the same protections.

Sure, but those "protections" only apply to authorities wanting to
access the information *without* a warrant. It's simple to get a
warrant, and you may not even find out about it. Also, the NSA is
grabbing and recording everything in transit anyway. Not much protection
to speak of, unless you've encrypted everything in transit, which is
mostly not the case with email.

> however, it's also irrelevant, because if someone is sending an email
> attachment, it will be downloaded within hours, maybe a day.

But can still be obtained while in transit.

> it can also be encrypted.

Yes, but most of the time isn't.

I run my own email server so storage isn't much of a concern for me.
What happens in transit is though, so if I did send anything critical,
it would naturally be encrypted before sending.

It's not irrelevant, and, in fact, it's relevant, simply because
"storage" has different protection than "communication".

The "type" of data doesn't matter for this legal distinction; what
matters is the "purpose" of the bits.

Assuming that there is an answer. Apparently there isn't. It's the

Actually, as usual, we found the answer.

Gmail iOS app:
Q: How do you open a Word attachment in Microsoft Word?
A: You have to "Open in Safari" the document from the net
and then "Share" from Safari, to Microsoft Word on the iPad.

Apple iOS app:
Q: How do you open a Word attachment in Microsoft Word?
A: You simply "Share" it from Mail to Microsoft Word.

The Google Gmail app stinks for this purpose.
The Apple Mail app just works.

This reference asks the same question essentially:
How to get a document from gmail to Pages on the iPad
http://ask.metafilter.com/221650/How-to-get-a-document-from-gmail-to-Pages-on-the-iPad

The workaround they most suggest seems to be to upload the document
from Gmail to a file server on the net, and then download it back
onto the iPad into Word on the iPad.

That's not workable, so I will continue to search for a solution on
my own and report back when I figure it out so that others may
benefit from the effort.

I figured it out!

Actually, this reference figured it out for me:

How do you download attachments from Gmail on the iPad?
https://www.reddit.com/r/ipad/comments/18tk9x/how_do_you_download_attachments_from_gmail/
"This is my biggest complaint with iOS. We need at least user or
limited access to a local file system..."

The convoluted but somewhat working solution was to do the following:

0. In Gmail on iOS, don't press on the attached "docx" icon.
1. Instead, in Gmail on iOS, press on the triangular "Drive" icon.
2. This will say "Saving to Drive..." (where it saves is unknown).
3. Now, in Gmail on iOS, press on the attached "docx" icon.
4. This will view the Word document in some unknown viewer.
5. Press the share-like icon in the bottom right of that viewer.
6. Select "Open in Safari" (do not select "Open in Chrome").
   http://i57.tinypic.com/24c5jye.png
7. I tried this a dozen times, only 3 of which opened the document
in a URL listed as "mail-attachment.googleusercontent.com"
   http://i58.tinypic.com/2vaf37k.png
8. The other 9 attempts at the same thing brought me to a Google
Mail login page (which I never logged in since I abhor web mail).
   Chrome: http://i60.tinypic.com/2airh1j.png
   Safari: http://i59.tinypic.com/15q55ir.png
9. If you're lucky, in Safari, when you view the document, you
can then just press on the blank area in the top right *under*
the bookmarks/cloud/+ icons, and you'll get the option to
"Open in Pages Open in ????"
   http://i58.tinypic.com/2u9tsgw.png
10. Pressing that, you will see a list of apps to open the file
in, one of which is "Pages" while another is "Word".
11. Press "Open in Word"
12. Voila! The Word document opens in Microsft Word, where all
    the comments are visible (finally)!

Note: While Safari opens the document in 9 out of 12 tries, Chrome
never opened the document no matter how many attempts I tried.

Note: I'm not sure if the step of downloading to the Google drive
is necessary or not. Also note that the random nature of the results
must be explainable, so, the *exact* sequence of steps is important.
