On an iPad, what is the "Control" key?

I think iPad, in which case you use the "Share Sheet" located under an
icon that loks like a box with an arrow coming out to select the app you
want to open the document in.

Yes, I've tested it in the default iPad mail program, and that works
well: opening the document in the iPad Word app does show the
comments. I assume it'll also work in the Gmail app.

No such button in the Gmail app.

You see it when viewing the attached document in the default viewer, which
is probably the same as in the iPad Mail program. Try touching the top of
the screen when viewing the docx file (as if you wanted to press the Done
button), and look at the top right hand corner. I think you'll find the
icon there. Touch it and you should be given the option of other apps to
view it in. Word then clearly shows the comments which the default viewer
didn't.

If that doesn't work, you may have to view your gmail via the normal iPad
Mail program, which handles the issue very easily.

Here is a complete description of the problem:

1. I bring up my Gmail message with the attached document embedded in it:
   http://i60.tinypic.com/5k4sd0.png
2. I long press on the document, but nothing says to open in Word/Pages:
   http://i59.tinypic.com/14nhj15.png
3. I can easily "view" the document, but it's in some funky viewer:
   http://i60.tinypic.com/x2nltg.png
4. The button that looks like a share, isn't a share button at all:
   http://i61.tinypic.com/2v0z5mr.png
5. Pressing the Google Triangle "saves" the document somewhere magical:
   http://i58.tinypic.com/szhesw.png
6. But, where is that document saved on the iPad such that it can be opened
in either Word or Pages to see if the embedded comments show up?
   http://i61.tinypic.com/2re4fif.png

It really shouldn't be this impossible to get the iPad to do something
as trivially simple a task as opening a document in the desired program
(e.g., opening a Word document in Word).

I agree with you that some obvious things are often harder to do than they
should be, or even impossible, on an iPad, but in this case, the task isn't
hard using the standard Mail app, so it's the Gmail app that appears to be
the problem. It is, however, poor that the iPad doesn't recognise that a
docx should be opened in Word.

Presumably you have the mail app loaded -- could you link it to your gmail
account? I do know that's easy.

Here's a more complete description of the next steps...
When I opened the DOCX file on the iPad in "Mail", it gave
the choice of Word or Pages (as it should):
 http://i57.tinypic.com/2emzbd4.png

When opened in Word on the iPad, the comments showed up correctly:
 http://i59.tinypic.com/2h6df2t.png

When opened in Pages, the way comments showed up was colorfully
funky, and unexpected, but usable (if less efficient):
 http://i58.tinypic.com/1ywupc.png

But Word could be induced to do something similar as Pages:
 http://i60.tinypic.com/fu3knd.png

I still haven't figured out yet how to get the Gmail app on the
iPad to bring up either Word or Pages, and, when I save the
document, I have absolutely no idea where it goes on the iPad!

It's not a matter of getting the iPad to do it; it's a matter of
getting Gmail to do it.

This problem is mentioned in the Gmail app reviews -- several months ago.
Something *Google* needs to address.
The stock (Apple) mail app can hand off attachments to ("open in...) a long
list of other apps.

I searched for those keywords, and found this:
Gmail (for iPhone) http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2395783,00.asp

They loved the Gmail app, for example, they said:
"You can already use Gmail on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch
via the bundled Mail app from Apple, but Google's own app is
    simply a better experience..."

But, they said nothing about the lack of the ability to send a Word
document to Microsoft Word.

I still think there must be a way, because, it's exactly what everyone
would want to do with a Word document.

This is correct, as I'm just getting back to this unsolved problem.

When I modify my Apple Mail to add my Gmail account, when that
Apple Mail (blue envelope icon) sees a Word document, it opens in
a viewer that does NOT see the comments.

However, in that Apple viewer, if you long press on the document,
a "share" box pops up on the top right, which allows the option to
"Open in Word" or "Open in Pages", among others.

Opening in Pages complains about the "Cambria" and "Calibri" fonts,
but the substitution to Times New Roman & Trebuchet are fine. The
comments show up way differently than in Microsoft Word, but, they're
OK (just displayed vastly differently). They're colored and boxed.

If, from Apple Mail, I open in Microsoft Word, the comments show
up in Microsoft Word the way you're used to seeing them (on the right).
They're dashed and colored and described.

Either way, if I receive the Word document with comments in the
Apple mail application, everything works fine.

It's only when I receive the Word document in the Gmail app that
the comments aren't visible.

I'm not sure what you're referring to, as I have never asked this
question prior to this thread ... but ... nonetheless ... I will
try to figure out how to get a Word document in the Gmail app to
open up in Word.

Seems to me *everyone* would want to do that, so, there must be a way.

Just because "everyone" would want to that doesn't mean that it is
possible to do it. Until Google implements it in the Gmail app, the
only solution is to use Apple's mail app to access the gmail account,
as you were told a long time ago, and recently discovered for yourself.

Yes, and recall all the way up to the moment when he discovered the

Up until this test, I had never used the Apple Mail app.
I had never used the Apple contacts either.

As nospam would say, that was hamstringing me.
So, now I'm using the Apple Mail app and the Apple Contacts.

Live and learn.

The Google Gmail app does a better search than the Apple Mail
app though (based on what I read on the net as it searches all
the mail whereas the Apple Mail doesn't, apparently).

So, there is still room for the Google Gmail app on my iPad,
if not on yours.
