I apologize for my strong wording. I was mostly speaking about the fact that, on Android, the available apps can do more than what they can do on the iPad. For example, most WISPs carry an Android device when they check out a site (in addition to laptop tools) because the WiFi capabilities are limited on the iPad, and Apple knows this, but chooses to do nothing about it. As another example, I already mentioned heaven forbid someone wants to use the venerable Tor Browser Bundle, which even the NSA has (apparently) not cracked (according to Snowden), which is just not available (because of Firefox) on iOS. As a third example, take the famous "Audacity" audio editor, which has huuuuuuuuge capabilities for modifying audio files (no, GarageBand doesn't even come close). Audacity is on all these common platforms but it's not on iOS. But the biggest restriction on iOS users are the boundary restrictions that prevent any appreciable sharing of data between apps. Yes, I know nospam says that's for our own good, but, I, for one, find the limitations far more restrictive than the sharing of data on Android. There are other things, such as the lack of launchers in iOS, but those don't prevent me from getting useful work done since the launcher in iOS, while limited in organizational capabilities, actually works justfine for most purposes. Out of all the above, it was really the lack of usable capability for WiFi reporting that is not on iOS that is on Android (anyone who says otherwise has never used any decent Android freeware app such as InSSIDer). So, in reality, to be fair to iOS, the limitations of iOS aren't all that bad for getting useful work done, but in the area of WiFi, they're huge.

It's for security; it's the reason that Android is a malware magnet, and iOS has yet to have any significant malware in the wild. > Out of all the above, it was really the lack of usable > capability for WiFi reporting that is not on iOS that > is on Android (anyone who says otherwise has never used > any decent Android freeware app such as InSSIDer). > > So, in reality, to be fair to iOS, the limitations of > iOS aren't all that bad for getting useful work done, > but in the area of WiFi, they're huge. That is your perception; When you have Apps such as the (unfortunately for you not free) Adobe Photoshop Touch for iPad, there are a whole bunch of things you can do which are not games. Given that PS Touch is integrated into the Creative Cloud and it supports full layered editing it is a very powerful tool. < https://db.tt/XzOnaCpu > -- Regards, Savageduck

Or, the ability to put my voice recorder in an "Audio" folder and on the iPad dock at the same time. Or, the ability to run a WiFi app that told me the signal strength. Or, the ability to run the Tor Browser Bundle. etc.

You're wrong. It's the only viable way to put a well designed folder structure onto a new device to put the apps into as they are added. >> Or, the ability to put my voice recorder in an "Audio" >> folder and on the iPad dock at the same time. > Why would you need to do that? So you can have the most frequently used apps on the dock and still have them in the appropriate folder where you will seen them when you are looking at what is currently installed on that device, particularly when its not your system and you are just using someone else's device for some reason. >> Or, the ability to run a WiFi app that told me the signal strength. > iOS is not designed for tinkerers; it's designed for users. Plenty of those with iOS devices need to work out why things arent working properly at the moment. Hordes need to do that sort of thing when travelling for example. >> Or, the ability to run the Tor Browser Bundle. > Take that up with the people who make that product. Pointless when Apple wont allow them to do what they need to do. I have the same problem with my password manager. There is nothing those who make that product can do about the fact that Apple wont let them do what they want to do. And that is an absolutely classic example of something that needs to work across all your devices.

If you want full access to each and every bit take a rooted Android device, or possibly a Windows device. You may not like it (and as much as I like my Apple devices, there are moments where I wished it would be different), but that's the way it is. And I certainly wouldn't hold my breath for any major change there. Love it or leave it... ;-) Best regards, Michael

But there is no good reason to not allow access to an app's files if the app does not have a decent export mechanism.

The whole point is to put the folders there which *will* be populated. It would be counterproductive to put a folder on the desktop that will never be used! I must say that Rod Speed *understood* what a consistent use model can be, simply from my very first description of it. You just can't get such consistency with iOS, which, after all that is said about the user experience, is particularly ironic.

I'm confused about this so-called 'limited space'. I fit *everything* I need with room to spare, on a single desktop. What is this limited space?

Could it be a Schrödinger's screwdriver? I can understand the desire of having an app on different pages of the Springboard, but since the Dock is visible and accessible from every page, I don't see why you would need it to be at any other location in addition to the Dock.

Someone else mentioned that each was 'different' but I fail to see that they're different. Both are exactly the same, with the exception that one was extruded from hex steel for the twist grip while the other was round knurled steel. But that was simply a function of the fact that I didn't buy the exact same offset screwdriver (as the minor difference in shape of the bar is/was meaningless to me). To me, they're *exactly* the same (and they would have been exactly the same had I bought both at the same time). In fact, I put one back into each drawer, and I don't bother to differentiate which one goes into which drawer (since they're exactly the same physically and functionally). So the point is valid that there *are* reasons that you want the same app in two places. In my case, when I need to grab a set of flathead screwdrivers, I open a single drawer, and grab a few screwdrivers, one of would be the offset screwdriver. When I want a set of Phillips screwdrivers, I open just hte Phillips drawer, and grab a few, one of which is the offset. If my toolbox were limited like the iPad is, I would be forced to open TWO drawers half the time, just to grab a handful of screwdriver in order to get work done. The iPad user interface is inefficient that way.
