#34692 — Tablet as touchpad while showing tablet GUI on big screen?

Trying to avoid confusion...

I'm sure that you can use a tablet for a virtual keyboard and/or a
touchpad component of a desktop computer, but that's not what I'm
asking about.

I'm wondering if all you have is a tablet and big monitor. Of
course what you see on the tablet screen can be sent to the
monitor with a cable or wireless.

This is my question...

Can you use the tablet as a virtual keyboard and/or a touchpad
while displaying the contents of the tablet, the GUI output part
like windows and dialogs that we interact with, on a big monitor?

The idea is to make use of the tablet touchscreen while using the
big monitor as if it were connected to a PC.

Let me know if that question is not clear and I will try to
explain further. Links or even just keywords would be appreciated.
Preferably for Android, but curious to know if it's been done on
an iPad.

Thanks.

there are numerous remote desktop apps, which will do what you describe.

That's not what I'm talking about.

But upon further consideration... I'm not sure it would work since
the iPad/Android touch interface uses the whole screen of the
tablet. Functioning as a touchpad, it would use a pointer like on
a PC, so you would have a pointer moving around on an iPad/android
GUI, which is even more involved.

the remote desktop apps solve this in a few ways:

one is you touch and the cursor goes to that location.

another is a virtual trackpad where you can move the cursor as you
normally would. a variant on this is a scrollpad, which only scrolls.

a tap is normally a click, and can optionally be a right-click,
double-click or a click-hold.

the keyboard can be displayed or hidden as needed, depending on what
you're doing on the target device.

some apps have a server component that hooks into the target os so that
the tablet can recreate the menus and other controls as normal tablet
native user interface elements, rather than just a view of a remote
display. this makes it a lot easier to interact with the remote device,
but it does require additional software.

the usual apps just ride on whatever remote desktop functionality is
built in, such as vnc.

I'm not talking about a "remote device". As I said... "all you
have is a tablet and big monitor". I'm talking about using the
tablet with a big monitor and making better use of the tablet
screen while doing so.

There's no point in using the tablet screen for its conventional
touch purpose when there is a large monitor available. There is no
need to display the GUI on the tablet or to have finger movement
be identical with the displayed objects on the tablet when there
is a large monitor available. A 7 inch or 8 inch tablet can be
used as a virtual keyboard and a large touchpad while showing the
contents of the tablet on the big monitor, without any need to
show the GUI on the tablet screen.

There is no point in taking up space on the monitor for the
virtual keyboard. The tablet touchpad area can be significantly
smaller (like with a PC touchpad) since your clumsy fingers are
not in the way of the GUI objects.

So far I'm getting answers to typical questions about showing
the tablet screen on a monitor and using the tablet for an input
device. Those are not what I'm talking about.

then what does 'using the tablet with a big monitor' mean?

if you want to output the tablet to a big monitor, there are several
ways to do that.

if you want to split the tablet gui to have only the keyboard on the
tablet with its interface on the external display, then no you can't.
that would be a very odd way to use a touch based device.

A keyboard and a touchpad.

Only if you have a closed mind.

You could have the whole tablet touchscreen as a keyboard and
simultaneously use it as a very large touchpad, simply by toggling
between one and the other. Or you could divide it into two parts,
touchpad and keyboard.

One thing for sure... Simply mirroring the tablet display to the
monitor and ending up with half of the huge monitor screen covered
by a keyboard is ridiculous. And there's no point in requiring
extensive finger movement just to emulate a touchpad. Ordinary PC
touchpads accurately cover the area of a large monitor.

a tablet ui is designed for touch, not keyboard & mouse/trackpad

touch interfaces don't have cursors, so there is no need for a touchpad
unless you are using remote desktop to a mac/windows system. since you
say that's not what you want to do then no trackpad is needed.

also, with a split interface, you won't know where to touch because the
content will be on the big display, not the tablet.

some tablet apps can drive an external display with different content
than what's on the tablet itself. a keyboard could appear on the tablet
only and not affect what's on the external display, however, that's up
to individual apps, when it makes sense. most of the time it doesn't.

> You could have the whole tablet touchscreen as a keyboard and

and how is this better than using a normal keyboard and mouse/trackpad?
they make bluetooth keyboards and trackpads. use those.

what problem are you trying to solve?
