Is "fotos" some new uber cool way of spelling the word "photos", or
something else entirely?

If you turn on Photo Stream it'll be automatic. Or are you one of those
who puke at the mere thought of using any internet-enabled technology (aka:
the cloud)?

Oh, I use it now and then 8-). I seem to recall some notice about having to
pay yet another bill if I use it too much. I also prefer to control my
information myself.

Looked. Wrong direction. I want to go from iPad to computer without iPhoto,
because that's not where I keep most of mine.

photostream can do that. you shoot the photos, they're pushed to the
cloud and down to your mac.

or you can just connect the ipad to the computer and copy the photos
off with any of a number of photo management apps.

unfortunately, mac users can't use finder for some stupid ass reason.

He says he wants to avoid iPhoto. Photostream will only download iPad
pictures to his computer via iPhoto on his computer. So that isn't
consistent with avoiding iPhoto.

She 8-) yes, I know I'm weird. Have I claimed otherwise? iPhoto on my
computer is where I make and edit albums, many of which are jpegs of music,
travel info for upcoming trips long or short, copies of trip albums( not
single fotos), travel directions on maps, and a couple actual foto albums.
At any given time, which ones I have on the iPad itself varies, and because
I can control the order within albums easily, how they are arranged can
vary as well. That's enough clutter in the main iPhoto on my computer.
Originals of EVERYTHING are filed elsewhere in folders in folders inside
folders where I can find them easily. I don't edit fotos with iPhoto, so
letting it download fotos to ITS dump is just an extra, less controllable
step which makes iPhoto even less useful for me.

I'm not complaining or asking for an explanation.

I'm just pointing out that the Photostream suggestion won't work for
you given the restrictions you've imposed on yourself.

Indeed, just a once-off operation as with other program's settings.

It's the way *I* learned to spell it as a child. I had to learn "photos"
when I was about 10.

ask yourself that. maybe you've never heard of fotomat.

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fotomat>
Fotomat Corporation was founded by Preston Fleet in San Diego,
California, in the 1960s, with the first kiosk opening in Point Loma,
  California, in 1965.
...
At its peak around 1980 there were over 4,000 Fotomats throughout
the United States, primarily in suburban areas.

Everyone, it was the only correct spelling.

I moved to the US when I was 8 and the fotos/photos issue came up a
couple of years later.

The reason I asked what country you were from wasn't to be intrusive;
rather, I was wondering if English was the primary language in your home
country. Several languages other than English use the letters "foto" in
their respective words for the English word "photo". So it would make
sense for someone who learned English as a secondary language to make
the mistake of spelling it that way in English as well. I haven't ever
seen the word "foto" in a major English dictionary.
