My wife is wanting to buy one of these -- a 10 inch screen What does she have to have installed on her laptop to communicate with the Ipad. I am referring to transferring files to and from the Ipad. I wish to avoid using iTunes at all costs, if possible. -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Maurice Helwig ~~~~~~~~~~~~

Try and put your prejudices to one side. The current version is not perfect but it does do the job. It locks on any synch I attempt to make with my iPad Air either when searching for items to be updated or contacting Apple Store. The problem with collections in iBooks has still not been resolved and I reported the problem to Apple just after the new version of iBooks was released. A recent call to the Apple tech I've been working with says that he's received no further reply from the developers. I don't know if the iTunes problem is related to the iBooks problem and he doesn't either. Saying that something doesn't work properly isn't "prejudice", it's reality. I hope the iBooks problem is resolved and, hope to have a more positive attitude about iTunes and iBooks. At present, I can recommend neither. I'm considering using the Marvin app being fed by Calibre if Apple is unable to resolve these problems since my primary use of an iPad is as a reader. The abilities to interact with the web and email are just convenient add-ons for me. -- Carl Heinz cfheinz57@charter.net (Remove number)

This was discussed a while back, but to recap, the new version of iBooks couldn't handle the number of Collections I use. I have an extensive ebook collection divided into Collections by author. In the case of authors having series with a number of books, I separated out the series within author into separate collections. After installing the current version of iBooks, the last thirty or so collections appeared as blank entries and I'm unable to access the books in them, nor am I able to reload them. iTunes locks when attempting to synch. I've reported my experiments to overcome the problem to Apple tech support and I've been told that my findings have been reported to the developers. This was not a problem in the prior versions of iBooks having the Collections function, and I've been using the Collections function since it was first made a part of iBooks. -- Carl Heinz cfheinz57@charter.net (Remove number)

I hope you don't think this is picky, but I have over a thousand books and magazines, about 60% pdf's and the rest eBooks, all organized by category. I created most of the categories myself and overwrote pre-assigned categories. I also overwrote author's names in order to have them in uniform format, last name(s) first. A few eBooks have been translated from other formats by Calibre. I have not encountered the problem you mention. How many books do you have and in what format? Have you made changes to entries for your own purposes? These factors ought not to make any difference, but they might have triggered a bug. -- ++====+=====+=====+=====+=====+====+====+=====+=====+=====+=====+====++ ||Arnold VICTOR, New York City, i. e., <arvimideQ@Wearthlink.net> || ||Arnoldo VIKTORO, Nov-jorkurbo, t. e., <arvimideQ@Wearthlink.net> || ||Remove capital letters from e-mail address for correct address/ || || Forigu majusklajn literojn el e-poŝta adreso por ĝusta adreso || ++====+=====+=====+=====+=====+====+====+=====+=====+=====+=====+====++

The Collections function in the new version seems to only be able to handle around 130 collections. The balance appeared as blank entries and the related books couldn't be accessed. But, the point is that prior the current update to iBooks, there was no problem. They are all EPUB with an handfull of PDF's for such things as my iPad manual. Being an old RPG programmer (IT manager/senior programmen/analyst for over thirty years), we occasionally encountered index errors. This happened when we hadn't allocated a sufficient number of "buckets". Since I've no PC or app programming experience, I don't know if app programming uses similar structures. I've spent quite a bit of time with tech support and I'm told that I'm not the only one to have encountered problems with the current iBooks. The tech support guy I've been working with has been good about recording my attempts at diagnosis (experiments) and relaying them to the developers. At present, it's in the hands of the developers. -- Carl Heinz cfheinz57@charter.net (Remove number)

However, I am not sure what you mean by "the last roughly thirty categories." Are you selecting "Category" as the organizing column in iTunes->Books? Are the "last...thirty categories" the last in that column alphabetically? Or are you selecting some other column for organizing? Evidently he has more than 200, and that worked in pervious versions of iBooks. Either Apple will fix it or they will set a limit of 128 collections (documentation means the bug is no longer a bug). -- If you mixed vodka with orange juice and Milk Of Magnesia, would you get a Philip's Screwdriver?

Sorry for entering this conversation late but I have a question for you. You say sync hangs for you when you connect to itunes. Have you tried turning sync off and then restoring from an earlier backup? I know this is simple and you most likely tried this early in your quest for a solution but I thought I'd ask. Good luck, Ed in Texas

You could use some sort of "cloud" service like DropBox or iCloud. There are also a few "file browsers" that let you use the iPad like any other USB flash drive, but they aren't worth the effort and you can easily delete something you shouldn't that way.
