The latest silliness to be blamed on the iPad (to achieve an
eye-catching headline by lazy journalists) is allergic reactions to
nickel. This is from MacRumors.com ...

iPad Implicated in Pediatric Rashes Diagnosed as Nickel Allergies
   -----------------------------------------------------------------
Apple's iPad may be the cause of unexplained allergic rashes in
children, reports The Washington Post, which cites a case study
of an 11-year-old boy that was published in Pediatrics medical
   journal.

The Pediatrics article focuses on an 11-year-old boy who may be
allergic to the nickel used in the casing of the tablet device.
Following the increasing use of an iPad, the patient developed
a rash that would not respond to conventional treatment.

His skin tested positive for nickel, one of the
most common allergy-inducing metals, and doctors
traced it back to an iPad he had used with
increasing frequency the past six months. The
iPad tested positive for nickel as well,
       according to the report.

Doctors advised the boy to use a Smart Case that covers the
entire outer surface of the tablet. Similar to other reports
of electronic device-induced rashes, the boy's skin condition
improved significantly when he started using a case that
prevented direct contact with the device.

As noted by the Associated Press, nickel allergies in children
appear to be on the rise, with 25 percent of those receiving
skin tests testing positive for nickel allergies, up from 17
   percent a decade ago.

This iPad isn't the only device implicated in skin rashes.
Earlier this year, Fitbit voluntarily recalled its Force
fitness tracker after a growing number of users developed
contact dermatitis from wearing the band. The rash was
originally attributed to nickel in the charging port of the
band, but that metal may not be involved as many users covered
the nickel-containing port with tape and continued to
   experience a rash.

This is NEWS??

Nickel allergy is nothing new.
I've had it for years...
Pur a cover on it....

FWIW It's an anger management course that _I_ need after touching an iPad!

Your only "nickel allergy" is when being paid in 5c coins. ;-)

It must be troublesome handling the new 5p and 10p coins;
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-22956874

The article claims that up to 10% of people in the UK have nickel
allergy. I've never noticed it when queuing at tills (but I'm going to
be more on the look out from now on); people refusing to have change
poured into their hands.

I don't know what they're made of and I've never heard of any allery
problems, but here in New Zealand the 1c, 2c, and 5c coins haven't been
used for a long time now. We have a copper-coloured 10c coin,
silver-coloured 20c and 50c coins, and gold-coloured $1 and $2 coins.
Above that are paper notes.

What a bunch of puss we have become!

Heard that yesterday. The reporter said that, in addition to cases, one
could Duct Tape the back of the iPad. You KNOW it was in Texas!

A lot of these "allergy problems" are caused by the modern day
over-cleaning and over-sanitising everything. Kids are no longer able
to build up the resistence levels they used to when playing in the
dirt, etc.
