I don't know what they're made of and I've never heard of any allery problems, but here in New Zealand the 1c, 2c, and 5c coins haven't been used for a long time now. We have a copper-coloured 10c coin, silver-coloured 20c and 50c coins, and gold-coloured $1 and $2 coins. Above that are paper notes.
