I just found out how much the dealer charges to duplicate my transponder
car key. Key-Me does it considerably cheaper. Have any of you used one
of their kiosks?
I ask here just because this is one of the more active newsgroups I
subscribe to and we all seem to be at least marginally tech-savvy...

My neighbor had a transponder key for his Honda Odyssey made for about $100. It was done at an Ace Hardware store and the vehicle was connected to a machine via the OBD-II port. I doubt if every Ace has that capability. Key-Me doesn't have that capability, they can clone certain transponders but not all transponders can be cloned. But obviously you've checked your make, model, and year, on the KeyMe web site. But I checked one of my vehicles and it's confusing. It doesn't have a transponder key and they can't do a remote for it that can unlock the doors.

One of them said that they usually can, but not now because of COVID.
My jaw kind of dropped and I forgot to ask them the price. Another is
closed today. What kind of retail store closes on Wednesdays? The
third can only do GM and Ford. Not Toyota. Feh.

I'm pissed that I can't just get a regular key that will open the door
and start the engine. Why do I have to spend big bucks for a
convenience that I've managed to do without for 60 years?

Exactly. Here (NL) insurance companies are forcing owners to disable the key-less feature (if possible) or upgrade the transponder to automatically disable if stationary (if possible).

Both have to be present to start the car. At least that is what the manufacturer claims. -- Cheers, Carlos.

Before I had it I thought it was stupid to press a button on your key to open the door, but I got used to it pretty quickly. Still, I never had a car stolen in 60 years of driving even when I left it completely unlocked with a window open. OTOH, no sane car thief would have bothered... -- Cheers, Bev Guns kill people like spoons make Rosie O'Donnell fat.

Maybe 10 years ago I watched the fire department guy try to open a
woman's car that way -- she'd locked her keys and her kid inside. The
woman said it would be OK to break the window, but it wasn't a real
emergency (screaming 2-YO is normal, not a life-threatening situation)
and he didn't want to do that -- it took him at least 15 minutes to
push something like the ruler over the top of the window (no idea why he
had to do that rather than the easy way) but he eventually got it open.
When I locked my keys inside my office one of the guys got the door open
with a plastic coffee-can lid and considerable violence. He said
everybody in New York (or maybe Chicago) knew how to do that.

When my granddaughter locked her keys in the car (in her driveway) she called a service. The guy that came out used some sort of fabric that he worked into the door crack and pulled the handle up to get the door open. Expensive mistake. It cost her $60. And of course it made her more late for work than she was when she accidentally bumped the door closed. My Ford has a fob only, no key. It won't let me leave the fob in the locked car. If I try, it honks the horn twice and unlocks the door. And finally my Buick has an Android app (keeping this on topic) that can remotely unlock the door and start the car (among other things). But the car won't go anywhere unless the key is actually in the ignition. > When I locked my keys inside my office one of the guys got the door > open with a plastic coffee-can lid and considerable violence. Probably not so much with key/transponder cars. <https://www.driving.co.uk/news/features/six-ways-thieves-can-break-into-a-car-and-how-to-prevent-it/> (Turn off JavaScript for more pleasant reading.) > And another thing about the old fashioned keys is that you never had > to replace the battery :-) The trouble with old fashioned keys is that you sometimes had to replace the car. In the 70s all one had to do to steal several models of American cars was to break the right side of the steering column (at the lock), easily remove a part, and then start the car with a screwdriver. In those days it was not that uncommon to install a hidden ignition kill switch. Mine was behind the grill. A bit inconvenient perhaps but not nearly as inconvenient as coming back to no car. Another common device used was a steering wheel lock (remember the Club?). It had the advantage of letting the perps know your car was well locked and so they hopefully went on to an easier mark and didn't cause damage to your car in the attempted break-in and theft.

Turns out the dealer was lying. Local locksmith would have charged $150
for the transponder key, but I chose two ordinary keys for the same
price -- the guy did something to the car to enable it to accept
non-transponder keys. I'm sure there's more to the key (worth $74 more,
clearly!) than just metal, but the problem is solved now.
I'm shocked that the dealer was such a shithead. I expected more of
Toyota people.

There are always tradeoffs. I'm satisfied.

If the guy had told me this was an option it would be OK if they charged
ridiculous amounts of money for their services, but he didn't.
