#73439 — WhatsApp leftovers after uninstall

After uninstalling WhatsApp from my android devices I've found a WhatsApp
folder left over which should, I would think, be deleted along with the
whatever else was deleted during the uninstallation process. Can anyone here
advise me what else might be lurking after uninstalling this program,
please? For the record I uninstalled FaceBook from those same devices first
and there doesn't seem to be anything left over from that procedure, unless
someone here can tell me otherwise, of course.

That folder should contain your conversations, not the software. It
would be wrong for the uninstall procedure to remove them automatically.

Ah, but a pop-up message asked me if I would like to delete the media files
associated with WhatsApp during the uninstall process, and I ticked the
'yes' box, so I was wondering if or whether any more files or folders were
left behind. I've become very suspicious about Facebook and Whatsapp
software.

As I have not un-installed whatsapp, I don't know exactly what files
remain. My guess in your case would be the text of the conversations.
Just have a look in there and list the files.

Whatsapp itself can no longer do anything with them, the software was
removed.

I don't know if the facebook app can do anything with them. I guess not.

Thanks for putting my mind at rest on this situation. Usually, when I
uninstall a program from my android devices, everything gets deleted, so I
was unpleasantly surprised when I found a Whatsapp folder still there after
uninstalling it. Thanks again Carlos.

It is the standard behaviour in Linux: when uninstalling a program, the
configuration and the data is not uninstalled. They are the property of
the user or the administrator. It seems that Android has inherited that
behaviour, somewhat at lest.

  You should have been "unpleasantly surprised" if the uninstall *did*
remove the WhatsApp folder!

  (As others also explained.) It contains *your* *data*. It's nobody's
business to delete it, unless the uninstall procedure asked for your
approval to delete. (Yes, I did ask about your *media* and you said it
was OK to delete that, but it didn't ask about your messages ('Chats' in
WhatsApp lingo)).

  Compare it to any other software, Say you've generated other user
data, such as text, spreadsheets, photos, music, e-mail, Usenet postings
:-), <anything> and you uninstall say your photo viewer and it decides
to - *silently* - delete all your thousands of photos! Not a very nice
thing to do, is it!?

You're absolutely right, Frank, and so is Carlos. It is my data after all
and it's nobody's business deleting it when I uninstall their app. You
mentioned Usenet postings with a smile. I don't suppose you can recommend a
half-decent Usenet app for Android devices, can you?

half-decent Usenet app for Android devices".

  *If* I ever felt the desire to read/post_to NetNews/Usenet on an
Android device, I would probably try to get trn working under Termux (or
try the same for tin).

It should be (and I think is) a configurable option when uninstalling
the app. If I'm going to pass the phone on to a new user, I'll want to
uninstall the app AND delete the data, for sure, even if the new user is
my kid.

Okay, so I've got my data in an encrypted database. What can I do with
it? It sure looks like nothing, without installing Whatsapp.

  I agree. WhatsApp should give the user the option to delete hir data.

  I don't know whether or not WhatsApp gives that option. I moved
WhatsApp from one device to another, but don't remember if a delete
option was given.

  True. But it should be your choice whether or not to re-install
WhatsApp. And - as you mentioned - the media, pictures, video, audio,
etc. are not encrypted, so they can be used by other (non-WhatsApp)
software.

I guess you'd want to delete *all* data in that case. I'd first make
a full backup, then reset the phone to factory settings. That should
do the job.

In that case, I do a factory reset. Or an "android" reset.

Well, you might want to install wasap again in some months time :-p


It is a fair question, I don't know if there is a third party tool that
can at least read that database.

Just because I want to clear my messages doesn't mean I would want to
delete everything before handing it over to a kid. The games, eg, I
probably want to stay. There's a lot of nuance lost with a full factory
reset.

(For the record, _I_ would not trust even a factory reset of a device
that had anything I consider personal on it. I pull hard drives from
computers I dispose of, and keep the hard drives until they fail. Upon
which I disassemble them. Stuff with soldered in storage is a big
nuissance. But I'd trust my own wipe of a device enough to hand it off
to a family member.)

If Whatsapp were serious about it being "my" data, they'd have an export
to "standard" format I could use. I know some web forums do that, and
the "standard" format I've seen has been one or more CSV files wrapped
with ZIP. Imgur's tool to download your content is (or was) the images
you uploaded (but not necessarily the original file) in JPEG/PNG/GIF/MP4
format wrapped in ZIP.

I'd give even odds that the database it sqlite, and standard sqlite
tools will read it, once it is unencrypted. That unencryption thing is
likely to be the real sticking point. I don't see any keys in the
Whatsapp directory, which leads me to believe they are either stored 
outside of the "shared" space, on the Whatsapp servers, or are baked
into the app. Trying a simple web search I found this:

The between-the-lines reading I get from that is the key is stored
outside of the shared space and there is a way to export the key with
certain versions of Whatsapp.

I would want to make sure any account data is erased. Yes, I'd like to
keep the apps, but there is no middle ground.

They do have export functionality, but it is crap.

You can clone the directory onto a new phone, install wasap, and it will
happily use the store.

  WhatsApp can export, but AFAICT only one chat at a time, so not very
useful if you no longer want to use WhatsApp and have many chats.
AFAICT, in this context 'chat' is equivalent to contact/person, i.e. it

  N.B. I didn't try this. because I have no need, do not want to
lose/risk anything and have not set up any of the 'sharing' options
(AFAICT, despite what the FAQ implies, email is not the only option for
export).

  WhatsApp also has 'Archive all chats' (also under Settings -> Chats ->
Chat history), but that is not what you want/would_expect, because it
just *hides* chats.

  So yes, the 'export' facilities are rather thin.

I had Whatsapp for a while, but uninstalled it ~ 9 months ago. That's
left for me:

Media/WhatsApp Video/Private/ 			(empty)
Media/WhatsApp Profile Photos/			(empty)
Media/WhatsApp Voice Notes/ 			(has an empty directory)
Databases/					(msgstore*.db.crypt12)

The *.db.* files are all encrypted. I don't know with what.
The *.jpg, *.mp4, *.webp files are not encrypted.

It's in shared storage, so if you've granted access to the sd card for
an app, that app can read those files.

Yes, I had something very similar to that leftover in my remaining WhatsApp
folder too. Very suspicious.

I don't see it as suspicious... the message database is encrypted for
your protection.
