Check your privacy settings in your google account. I've never enabled > it and google don't know anywhere I've been. Yes, you can turn off the 'Location History' setting in your Google Account. But that only means that *you* can no longer see that history. Google doesn't say - let alone guarantee - that *Google* does not store/keep your location history when that setting is off. Look very carefully at what Google says and what it doesn't say. For example one part says "When you keep your Location History, you can...". See, *'you'*, not 'Google'. Me paranoid? Well they lie(d) about the 'X-No-Archive: Yes' header in NetNews/Usenet articles (they *do* archive such articles, they just don't *display* them (after a week) in their online 'reader'), so why wouldn't they lie about what 'Location History Off' does and doesn't do? Anyway, I'll try to remember to turn it off before I'll go on my next bank robbery.

And don't forget to turn off Web and App Activity. Location history apparently does nothing. I'm repeatedly surprised by how easily people are tracked through their phones. Where have they been? Yet the mob all had their phones out to make the experience real by filming it... as they commit federal crimes.

What's wrong with Airplane Mode? o You can film all you want, with privacy - can't you? I haven't checked in a while, but doesn't Airplane Mode a. Turn off Wi-Fi b. Turn off cellular (and cellular data) c. Turn off bluetooth d. Turn off NFS e. (Whatever other radios you have, turn 'em off manually.) -- If you're intelligent about it you can maintain a semblance of privacy.

On the Pixel2 "airplane mode" turns off wifi and cellular. I can turn wifi back on in airplane mode, but I don't know how to turn on cellular all by itself -- or why I'd want to. Bluetooth and GPS/Location have separate switches. As soon as I discovered those defaults I turned off automatic photo uploading and location saving. Hrm. I have an FM radio app. I wonder if that works in airplane mode... -- Cheers, Bev "Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things that I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people who pissed me off."

My aim is 1) save battery life between infrequent calls and 2) prevent my phone acting as a tracking collar. It's hard to even imagine some of the tricks these companies come up with for tracking. Especially Google. I suspect that if you were the guy shitting in the Capitol hallways, using airplane mode, you should expect a knock at the door. :)

I leave airplane mode off, along with location and bluetooth unless I
need them. I charge my battery overnight while the phone listens to me
(or hubby, it's impossible to tell) snore so it's always 100% in the
morning. The only time I've ever run the battery down during the day
was by leaving bluetooth on and taking lots of photos.

What a waste -- he should have used Pelosi's chair instead.

Are we exposed in airplane mode with location and bluetooth off? Or do
we have to turn it completely off?

Bluetooth is especially problematic in San Francisco because it
makes it nearly impossible to tell who is hearing voices and who
is just talking on the phone, and in this city their numbers
seem about equal. --Shaun Nichols

But seriously, there have been reports of Google/Android turning on (and using) Wi-Fi, even if it has been switched of by the user. If that's true, Google still might gather (and store) - limited - location data/history. So if you have a smartphone, your soul belongs to Google or Apple, your 'choice'.

We covered this in detail long ago, where Google (said they) stopped that. o As with Apple, Google "said" it was "a bug" - so make your own decisions Me? On Android, I skip the "account setup" - the phone works just fine w/o it o The "mother ship" doesn't track me - or better yet - my neighbors <https://i.postimg.cc/G2n0qDpt/settings07.jpg> Neither my OS, nor my free apps know anything about the mother ship. o And I have 1600 apps - all free - as there is no need for payware (IMHO) On iOS, you can't even get close to that kind of privacy, unfortunately o Even your free apps essentially permanently wired to the mother ship. Luckily though, on both, you can _set_ permissions on a per-app basis: o <https://i.postimg.cc/05dvXVDs/settings06.jpg> Where you can easily get a good summary of which apps are requesting what: o <https://i.postimg.cc/KcncSGXC/settings05.jpg> > Google still might gather (and store) - limited - location > data/history. How are they gonna know who you are? o You don't _ever_ log into a Google Account if you don't want to. Even when you do traffic and routing, they still can't tell who you are. o If you're intelligent about it, that is. There are _plenty_ of other ways to obtain free traffic & offline routing: o <https://i.postimg.cc/SKsjkwLC/maps03.jpg> > So if you have a smartphone, your soul belongs to Google or Apple, > your 'choice'. Wrong. o IMHO If you're not intelligent (or lazy), your soul belongs to Google or Apple. o But if you're intelligent, you can (maybe) attain a semblance of privacy. (as a computer connected to a network is an inherently insecure device) -- The problem is un-intelligent people aim for highly MARKETED solutions. o They can't think outside the box like normally intelligent people do.

Before the infantile apologists jump on that as a "fact" I finally got wrong after all these decades on Usenet, I have 1,600 APKs but about 600 apps installed on my phone at any given time (as discussed elsewhere). o <https://i.postimg.cc/XYnhh0N5/appdrawer04.jpg> 665 apps installed The reason is that whenever I download from Google Play or from F-Droid o I have my phone set to automatically archive the APK into a folder Unlike the ignorati who frequent this newsgroup, I prove what I claim: o <https://i.postimg.cc/NjkLvYdy/aurora01.jpg> aurora scrapes google play o <https://i.postimg.cc/W3h4ZZTr/aurora02.jpg> filters stuff Google won't o <https://i.postimg.cc/ZR25xq5Q/aurora03.jpg> spoofing & updating settings Plus, I extracted (long ago) all the pre-installed apps o And each & every one of the Android system apps Which accounts for about 200 (or so) packagages which are pre-installed o <https://i.postimg.cc/9XBsgmt9/appdrawer05.jpg> 437 apps installed Although I've disabled every Google listed functionality that I could: o <https://i.postimg.cc/9FmRKqnz/stt01.jpg> Where the phone works just fine with almost all Google stuff disabled: o <https://i.postimg.cc/ht5bzHXd/appdrawer03.jpg> lots of detail -- Updated as the apologists would love to find a fact wrong from me. o But they can't.

I saw an interesting article yesterday. Not about spying but a reminder of how much data gets spread around. A young, female hacker downloaded lots of files from Parler and uploaded them to the Internet archive. Lots of video and photos from rampagers at the Capitol. With metadata. I'ts expected the Feds will be able to use much of it to ID people. It's a very graphical display of how little people understand about their data. These people were filming themselves, carrying phones, while they committed serious crimes.

"sms" <scharf.steven@geemail.com> wrote | Maybe they will plead insanity..."clearly I was insane your honor, why | else would I take video of myself in a coup attempt?" | They do seem to be doing that. The man who stole the podium says he was just there to appreciate historic DC buildings. The rich woman who arrived by jet said she was never inside, despite pictures showing she was. The retired military man who brought in ties to take hostages said he'd just found them and was planning to give them to the cops. They've been well trained by Trump: Lies are only wrong if they don't work. But the most bizarre is the viking in face paint, who turns out to live with his mother. She complained that the jailkeepers refuse to give him organic food. A judge has ruled that he has a right to be given organic food in keeping with his religion. So are these terrorists or snowflakes? And is there a difference?
