But that report isnt likely to be very useful. Nothing like as useful as the cellphone base data which is continually real time.

This information is collected and distributed by some local/regional/national authority. It is broadcasted, I think, piggyback on some radio stations. Availability and quality varies per country. But Google collects statistical information from the actual speed users have on every road and from that it deduces traffic jams. They are not the only ones that do it: TomTom, for instance, does the same thing - if you opt out of sharing your own information, the system then refuses to give you the information they collect and you can hit a jam unawares. For this the TomTom requires an internet connection (low bandwidth). They also can get the "radio" information via internet from some server instead. Yes, the TomTom has several times routed me avoiding jams and accidents. But... consider that you are driving to destination on a dual lane highway that you know well and you have still 50 km ahead. Suddenly, the thing says you must get out in the next exit. WTF! This thing is mad. And you ignore it. TomTom has the habit of routing strange stupid "shortcuts" which I call "tomtom shortcuts". Then, few kilometres ahead I find the entire road traffic collapsed. Now I know why the thing wanted me to exit the highway, there is an accident ahead. The designers did not think of telling you somehow. -- Cheers, Carlos.

Google allows you to opt out of their data collection, and yet, you _still_ get the same real-time traffic & routing (without even logging into Google Servers) if you're intelligent. -- Attaining reasonable privacy on a smartphone requires some intelligence.

Google Maps used to be only able to carry small offline areas. AFAIK it has become larger, but I strongly doubt that in can cover squares of thousands of kilometres, i.e. thousands by thousands of kilometres. Anyway, it's best to have both Google Maps *and* a - real - offline (and online) program such as OsmAnd+. I carry Google Maps and three offline programs, which each have a different source of map provider. That may sound a little drastic, but when - literally - your life may depend on it, one can't be too careful.

Yes, it would depend on the trip for sure. I never leave civilization these days so my biggest problem is usually avoiding a glut of my fellow humans. :-)

These days we live in very small bubbles and even have an automatic reminder to take our car out for a spin every two weeks or so. :-(

Of course you block Google Analytics in your HOSTS file, right?
Does Android have a HOSTS file?
All of this is not even talking about the fact that Google have
repeatedly been caught lying and deliberately misleading people
about settings. (Last I remember hearing about it there was a
warning that it's not enough to disable location history. You also
have to turn off Web and App Activity. Google never stops with
clever ideas to keep spying and lying. It's their business.)
Then there are the indirect privacy issues, like the halfwits
who pay to join Amazon and then proudly give their Amazon
account ID at Whole Foods, so they can get an imaginary
discount.
If you keep your phone in a lead box you *might* have privacy.
Though I wouldn't be surprised if Google is partnering with those
companies that are putting up surveillance cameras at intersections,
so they have a video record of you driving around with your phone
in a lead box.
On the other hand, you use gmail. So you obviously
don't care about Google or anyone else tracking everything
you do. So how much is your privacy advice worth?

Yes. And you can easily read it even if you're not rooted:
o Freeware to access your Android hosts file from Windows without being root
<https://groups.google.com/d/msg/comp.mobile.android/LTQtwSGROw8/XePw-iPuAgAJ>
See also:
o <https://someonewhocares.org/hosts/>

o <http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm>
etc.
Note: Mayayana often suggests Acrylic DNS which has the advantage of
regular expressions which a typical hosts file does not recognize.
--
Note: If your desktop is Windows, this is also a helpful command:
Win+R > hosts
o Do you have a trick that edits & saves the HOSTS file in a single command?
