There's several videos of people trying to shatter the Motorola shatterproof screen when the phone first came out. In one the guy actually ran over it with a car. The screen survived but the phone broke...

The wife's iPad Pro in its fancy UAG case has been dropped a couple of times in the past with no problem. However a recent drop shattered the screen. You can buy unlocked phones from other sources, the biggest source being Apple stores, but also stores like Best Buy, Fry's, B&H Photo, Amazon etc., sell U.S. versions of unlocked phones. Some stores also sell non-U.S. versions of unlocked phones but those won't work on Verizon or Sprint.

The models tied to plans were a dozen or two. I don't remember at Best Buy. Unless you buy an UNLOCKED phone from a lot of major retailers. Two
different types depending on what carrier you plan to use.

I was just in Costco today and they are selling the Moto G6 which works on all four U.S. nationwide carriers, as well as smaller carriers. Many unlocked phones from Moto, LG, Samsung, etc., work on all four U.S. nationwide carriers. Even though no U.S. carriers sell the Moto X4, the updates come through just fine. Yousuf is describing a system that existed in the U.S. until about 10 or so years ago where you always got your phones from the carrier.

I'd say up until 5 years ago, it was still mainly carrier-provided phones. Unlocked phones from the mfg did start getting more popular once the iPhone was introduced, but that was still pretty much a niche way of buying a phone, and even most iPhones were sold through a carrier for most of that time. It's useful to be able to keep a global SIM, with a U.S. number, in your phone while also having a data-only country-specific SIM. I ended up just carrying two phones with me. With Google Voice, dual SIM phones are less of an issue though.

I could phone anyone on Mexico, USA, or Canada, but my Canadian friends could not phone me because to them it was an international pone call. They could only text me. The other interesting thing is that I got a number of nuisance calls, LOL. Those that call and hang. Or some machine that called that number a month before my arrival, so left voice messages, saying that some account was going to be closed. I tried telling them that they were getting the wrong person, but they hung on me - so I blocked the number. Then there were people, possibly friends of the previous owner of the number, and these gave thanks for me clarifying the situation. I saw on the new phone my friends bought that Samsung integrates a call blocker app with the dialer, "Hiya". So I installed that, and finally I got tranquility. It also works in Spain, but not that well. In Spain I have currently redirected my land line to another Android phone with Hiya, because I was being bombarded with nuisance calls. I need to find an Android land line wireless extension phone or something. A call screener/recorder, perhaps. Sigh. -- Cheers, Carlos.

You could have rented a Canadian LocalPhone incoming number for $5 + $3 per month <https://www.localphone.com/prices/incoming_numbers> and forwarded it to the number in Spain. They would call the Canadian LocalPhone number and you would pay the 7¢ per minute for the calls to Spain. Wish that Google Voice allowed forwarding to non-U.S. numbers, but LocalPhone is an acceptable workaround.

Well, I did not know about "LocalPhone", but if that ends in calling my Spain number, my company charges me about an euro per minute to get that call while roaming in Canada. But if you wish you can use an app (Hangouts) and do VOIP using data but it's not necessary. The issue with Google Voice is that they don't support forwarding to foreign numbers. So if you buy a foreign SIM you can't have people call your Google Voice number and have it forwarded to the foreign SIM. With Localphone you can rent a phone number and have it forwarded to a local foreign SIM number and pay their low prices per minute. FWIW, I use this setup when I'm in an 'expensive' - to call or be called - country. If I want to call home or anywhere else expensive, I use Skype to call the number. Other than this, there are of course many other options to call inexpensively from a normal phone to a phone in an 'expensive' country. There are other tricks. Like arranging for both sides to be on a WiFi zone and then using some video chat service that both have - like wasap, google duo, hangouts, skype...
