Not everyone agrees. A Google search finds many dissenters.

BTW Some folks actually drilled holes in their new iPhones trying to get
the jack back. Guess those were the real desperate ones.

Do you suppose the iPhone will ever have a USB-C connector?

a google search finds whatever you want. it'll even tell you the earth
is flat and the moon landing was faked.

it boils down to people hate change.

there will always be those who want to hold technology back and remain
in the past. fortunately, they're a small minority.

over thirty *years* after the cd debuted, there are still those who
insist on using vinyl records.

people complained when broadcast tv went digital and they had to buy
new tvs or use clumsy adapters, but when they saw just how much better
hdtv was, they quickly shut up.

even cheap hdtvs these days blow away those old crt tvs, where 25" was
considered to be 'big'.

technology involves continual change.

> BTW Some folks actually drilled holes in their new iPhones trying to get

some folks are stupid for believing what was obviously a satire video.
fortunately, very few people thought it was true.

absolutely, along with the usb implementors forum, who just released
the usb-c audio spec, intel, apple, motorola, oppo and many others. i'm
in incredibly good industry-wide company.

it won't be long until most android phones have digital audio jacks.

there will probably be a few that don't, but they won't be the flagship
phones.

transitions are always a pain, but once it's done, people will be
thrilled about the numerous advantages of a digital audio jack.

> > the usb-c audio spec was also just released this past week.

nope. usb-c is thicker than lightning and does less, so there's no
point in that. there are adapters if you really need one.

Nope. It makes no difference whether the analog signal travels a 3 foot
cord or a hair's width micro trace. The audio quality depends on the
equipment used, not the length of the analog wire.

>>> noise cancellation

Wired headphones with noise cancellation abound. And Bluetooth too.
Nothing new there. But IMO charging yet another device is a PITA.

No one holds technology back. Unless you count not buying it.

Yep. My local Barnes & Noble sells new 33 rpm records. Choice is great.

You have crystal balls now? The market will decide.

Hope it takes wired headphones that don't need a charge.

nobody said anything about length. you're confused.

the major advantage is that headphones are no longer limited to the dac
in the device. they can use any dac they want.

the better headphones will use higher end dacs while cheaper headphones
will use cheap dacs. giving the user a *much* wider choice of options.

even audiophiles who think there's an advantage to high bitrate audio
can get headphones with appropriate dacs.

> >>> noise cancellation
>
> Wired headphones with noise cancellation abound. And Bluetooth too.
> Nothing new there.

nope. quite a lot new there.

existing noise canceling headphones have their own noise canceling
circuitry, making them relatively expensive.

with a digital link, noise cancelation can entirely be done using the
phone's existing noise cancelation hardware (it already does it for
phone calls), which means that noise-canceling headphones can be *less*
expensive than they are now.

yet another win for consumers.

furthermore, the processor in a phone is far more capable than anything
you'd find in headphones meaning the noise cancelation could be even
more effective than it is now *and* be cheaper.

> But IMO charging yet another device is a PITA.

who said anything about charging?

wired headphones don't need to be charged.

you're very confused.

> >>> and much, much more.
>
> And much(1) much(2) more what?

more benefits. do try to keep up.

among the numerous benefits include biometric sensors. the ear is a
perfect place to monitor pulse, body temp and many other things,
particularly for those not interested in wearing fitness bands or
smartwatches.

> > there will always be those who want to hold technology back and

those that complain about keeping a 100+ year old interface are doing
exactly that.

they don't sell very many, my local barnes&noble closed and good luck
finding a record player.

it's quite obvious in what direction the market is going.

why would wired headphones need a charge? it wouldn't.

you're very confused and don't understand the industry. no surprise
there.

You miss the point; an earphone jack is analog, defeating DRM.

*you* miss the point. there is no drm to defeat.

and if there was drm content, it would never make it to the analog
headphone jack in the first place. back in the day of drm'ed music,
such content didn't play on unauthorized devices, all of which had
*analog* headphone jacks.

Given the new pixel phones from Google have them, you should be ok for a
while.

If the new Pixels have no SD card slot as the reviews I've read so far
say, I'll probably look elsewhere even if they do have a headphone jack.

This netbook (Acer E3-112) has a supposedly non-removable battery, it
too has a "battery reset" button concealed underneath.
