I finally stumbled on one of these icons in another app: http://tinyurl.com/hzybljk https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOe2sINMvXGjMsHGaWjVb6elt1ZTR3_RkJuIsC2M_dK-WJSeGKBEndcl1BzapA7jg/photo/AF1QipMZKKCzr1APNzeZA10r87--UXnJ_xNxIz8KT9kw?key=RmtZQjlNaWEtT0I0TGVtVzNiLUF2UGlNTnZDclFn Clicked on it and, automagically, my TV started playing the video in question. Nice! But that video was not on YouTube. Poked around the YouTube app for awhile, brought YouTube up under the Chrome browser.... but have not yet seen the icon. Can anybody elucidate? -- Pete Cresswell

What do you get? If you get just a "finding devices" dialog, do you have an Office 365 account onboard?, and in particular is it under control of Office (the phone can be wiped from O 365). If so, you'll need to logon to O 365 as an admin and disable that for that phone, then you can delete the app that handles that on your Android phone - Microsoft Intune Company Portal (just called the Company Portal on your phone app list). Works for quite a few folk - reported on Google a thread (can't find it now) @: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!forum/chromecast In short, Microsoft's Intune Company Portal causes problems with casting from the YouTube app! Been a problem since about May this year - AFAIK, Microsoft have not fixed it. -- Duncan.

Earlier versions of the Chrome browser needed an extension to use a Chromecast device. Under the current version (53.0.2785.101m on mine) the extension is no longer needed. You might try updating your browser. >> What do you get? If you get just a "finding devices" dialog, It's looking for all Chromecast devices that you've set up. When it finds them it will list them, and you can choose which device to cast to. BTW the You Tube app on my Android phone casts just fine to all my TVs, no browser needed.

The GoogleCast app does its magic by taking screencaps of the Android device & mirroring them to the ChromeCast device. This requires substantially more CPU and eats into the battery (as well as heating up the Android device). I have found that, on occasion, my Android device, for whatever reason, doesn't see the ChromeCast device on my WiFi network, so the ChromeCast icon isn't displayed in the YouTube (or whatever) app. Rebooting my Android device will usually resolve the issue. -David

??? The Google Cast app is needed to setup the phone on Chromecast.
After that, it's just a screensave really :) - although I use it to stop
(other apps) casting.
It also has quite a good "Get Apps" tab, to find all those other apps
that cast. Android phones should have Google's YouTube built in. Two
apps I like for movie watching from PC are Google's Videostream and
Plex.

I experienced that when double-checking before writing my "Got It..." post. Thought I was losing my mind at first because I was 99% sure I had seen and used the icon in the YouTube app just a day before. Seems like poor UI design to just quietly fail to show the icon. Non-intuitive and all that..... Better, IMHO, would be throwing a dialog if/when the user clicks the icon and no ChromCast devices are found. -- Pete Cresswell

On my Android phone all the apps show no icon when my Chromecast devices are powered down (TVs turned off). On my PC's Chrome browser the icon is always there. Only when I select it does it search and then tell me there's "device missing". On my Samsung tablet The icon is always there. When I select it, it lists my (dead) devices. Only when I select a device from the list does it tell me that it can't be found. Personally I prefer the no icon = no device. Much easier IMO.
