That's obsolescent rather than obsolete.

Ok, Android 2 is "obsolescent" and not "obsolete"?

My Nexus1 I think I flashed it with an unofficial Android 4.x, what
makes it quite a brick is lack of 3G signals and modern SSL/TLS
requirements.

If it runs NewPipe, you can use it for an advertisement free YouTube
player. That's what I do with my old Android tablets. It works great.

I don't pay for Sky/Netflix/AppleTV/Disney+ etc, but I do pay Youtube

Yes, tape media itself is cheap, but the drives are very expensive as
they are professional gear targeted to companies who use these drives
24/7 for many years - and then it is not that important, if the drive is
5000 USD or more. Realiability and availability in case of a failure is
more important.

Yes, HDD is the medium of choice nowadays. Personally I use a drive bay
in my tower computer and hot swappable SATA drives in trays. Each drive
has a nominoal capacity and I always have at least 3 copies of
everything with daily rotation and a deduplication archive on each disk
which keeps all changes from the last 6 months. In addition there is an
encrypted file server at a hoster and a NAS as temporary storage for the
backup repositories. So in total I have 5 copies of everything at two
different locations.

Hi Arno,

I didn't want to have this conversation because it's classic Apple crap.
Anyone who says sd cards are "obsolete" simply doesn't understand them.

There's a reason more than half of Android phones of today have the slot.
But, you're correct that my example of religious belief systems was wrong.

I never disagree with a logically sensible viewpoint, so I agree with you
on my analogy, where my point was that your comparison was inappropriate.

The fact is the Apple religious zealots have been parroting Apple for years
whenever Apple removes important functionality so they have to buy it back.

Apple tells people they removed functionality because it's "outdated".
And people, being idiots, not only believe Apple, but parrot Apple back.

It's a religious belief system that the Apple religious zealots parrot.

So I was in the mindset of religious analogies.
My bad. I apologize.

> Personally I don't use SD cards in phones any longer for more than 5

There's nothing wrong with saying that in your desperation to replace the
lost functionality, you buy your way out of the lack of sd functionality.

Because, if you seriously analyze what you've done, that's what you did.
There's nothing wrong with you admitting that to yourself.

You do NOT have to admit that's what you did, to me.
I already know what you did.

The Apple religious zealots parrot all sorts of crap like that also.

The fact is the OEMs remove functionality because they make money by you
being so desperate to buy that functionality back that you pay for it.

>> What sd does, no other replacement can even come close to doing.

That's just not true. You saying that shows you don't understand sdcards.
It doesn't need to be replaceable, for example.
It just needs to be there.
So that you can use it.

What if you wanted storage that grows with your needs over time?
I know how *you* would solve that problem, so you don't need to answer.

In your sheer desperation, you'd pay more for "the cloud" to get it back.
And that's OK.

Just be honest with yourself.
That's all I ask of you.

> Also if you use SD cards to extend the internal memory to install apps

I've said a thousand times that nobody sensible uses adoptable storage.
Not today.

We all played with it in the past.
It's an abomination.

You can't argue away the value of sd cards by complaining about one thing.
You'd be better off complaining that sd storage is less reliable anyway.

This statement above proves you do not understand even the simplest of the
most basic of the most obvious features of sd card storage, in my opinion.

Let's stop this because it's obvious you don't understand sd card
technology, and I'm tired of pointing it out so let's just drop it. OK?

I had no need for an SD cards in my phone for a long time (over a
decade). However, in my new tablet I did install one, because I wanted
to store many movies. I do not store movies in a phone, the display is
too small.

This really doesn't compute, either physical SIMs are obsolete or they
aren't. If a first slot is not obsolete, then the second one isn't.

You are correct. They are wrong. Dead wrong.

You're bringing up absurdities in this thread which abound everywhere.
These utter absurdities are coming from Joerg, s|b, Steve Hayes, et al.

One of the major problems in this thread causing most of the absurdities is
the people "saying" that the hardware is "obsolete" have no idea it's not.

Here's a list of 2923 current/recent Android phones with "dual SIM" h/w.
 <https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?nYearMin=2021&chkDualSIM=selected&sAvailabilities=1,2&idOS=2>

And here's a list of 363 current/recent Android phones with "ESIM" h/w.
 <https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?nYearMin=2021&chkESIM=selected&sAvailabilities=1,2&idOS=2>

FWIW, here's a list of only 340 current/recent phones with both:
 <https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?nYearMin=2021&chkDualSIM=selected&chkESIM=selected&sAvailabilities=1,2&idOS=2>

In summary, the people claiming sd hardware is "obsolete" are factually
wrong, and, it turns out, only the known trolls are claiming that anyway.

Yes, really.

A backup should be done on a regular basis and not only if the battery
is about to fail. Treat your smartphone like your laptop or PC: you also
shouldn't keep important data only on your laptop or PC without any
backup since internal storage can always fail at any time and you can
delete or modify data by accident as well.

Because internal UFS-based memory is faster and manufacturers can save a
bit money.

Samsung is not "the standard" in any way. It is just one of the
manufacturers with the largest market share. But Xiaomi is also very
popular nowadays and there is also Google itself with their "Pixel" series.

Most of what people are claiming in this thread is not supported by facts.

Samsung's world wide market share is substantial enough bit let's look at
the facts before making any conclusions about Samsung or Xiaomi sd slots.

These are current/recent Android phones that have the sd slot hardware.

Yes, I know. I should also wash the dishes more promptly, revise my
will, set up a medical power of attorney, leave final instructions,
sharpen my lawnmowe blade.

I definitely don't do that. What is probably lost are texts and text
chats that I probably would never have looked at, and about 40 mostly
short notes made on a note-pad type program, which I had intended to
review but nothing pressing.

I haven't checked the google backup yet, but I have doubts that they
cover this. The program is a little freebie that came with
MyPhoneExplorer.

Well, no more Xiaomi for a while. I got Motorola. More details after it
ocomes and I try it, but some reviews said it had very few deviations
from vanilla Android. So I should be able to find the settings etc.
that you guys or online articles tell me to use.

For the record, I was lossing interest in the SD card, but I had a Redmi
note 8 pro, and they now have Redmi Note 17 Pro. I tried 17, 15, 14,
13, and maybe back to 12 before I found one that woud use an SD card.

I am considering getting a Redmi 15c or a Redmi A7 Pro, both of which,
I am told, make provision for an SD card. The 15c appears to have a
better specification than the A7 Pro, but costs less. I'm not sure how
that works.

There are a few other phones on my list to consider, but all of them
are said have provision for an SD card. If they don't have that, they
don't get on my list.

I'm not sure of the difference between a SIM and an ESIM, but had
assumed that an ESIM replaced the physical card. From what I read
here, it doesn't. Does it matter?

Are you planning to encrypt that microSD card?

A7 Pro has got Nano-SIM + Nano-SIM, same with 15C. I had never heard of
a physical eSIM, but apparantly it's a thing. A (non physical) eSIM can
be handy when you travel abroad. You could easily buy one online and you
don't have to wait until it arrives via snail mail.

Yes, I see here it's under
Memory Card slot microSDXC (dedicated slot)
for both 5G and 4G versions of both phones.

This is what I hate about so many models being available. I like
Xiaomli but if I were devoted to it I'd be very unhpappy to find these
phones had SD slots 2 days after I bought another phone, and after I
checked the Redmi Note Pro 17, 15, 14, and 13. How am I supposed to
know that A7 Pro is more or less Pro than Note Pro.

Yes, normally. I think the physical esim must have come later for
phones (all of them originally) which didn't have esim built-in.

>> From what I read
>> here, it doesn't. Does it matter?

A physical esim takes a slot in the tray, and if there are any phones
with only one slot these days, you'd have to take your regular sim out
and put in the esim.

For this trip, I seem to have lost the sim for the company I deal with
and they don't mail to the US. I have to stop at a bookstore on the way
out of the airport. Probably be tired and I hope there is no line.

But it looks like they sell esim connectivity for the same price. IIUC
I have to get them to send me a profile, script, program, whatever to
load into the esim before I get there.

And then there is Peru, where you need an esim or international roaming
(which did not work for my phone) or a local friend, because you can't
buy a sim there if you're not a Peruvian. It had something to do with
stopping fraud.

What is the implication being made here?

No.

What difference would it make if I were?

I'm not planning to travel abroad any time soon. Last time I did was
in 2013, when I visited Namibia and Botswana, and yes, buying a SIM to
use in each country and changing SIMs four times at the border was a
bit of a schlep, so an ESIM might be useful if I were planning to
travel, but I'm not.

Given s|b is a known troll, I suspect he's trying to intimate that the only
way "he" can consider using an sd card is as "adoptable storage", when
almost nobody uses sd cards that way. We use them as "portable storage".

What the s|b troll is likely alluding to, by playing coy games (which prove
s|b is a troll) is if you encrypt the card, the encryption key remains on
the phone. But almost nobody bothers with encryption on sd cards nowadays.

The troll may also be alluding to the slower speed of sd cards when
enryption/decryption activities occur, but again, being a troll, he never
said why he asked the question. Trolls like s|b just want to play games.

Given the troll is just playing his troll games, let's see how he responds.
