Well, no more Xiaomi for a while. I got Motorola. More details after it ocomes and I try it, but some reviews said it had very few deviations from vanilla Android. So I should be able to find the settings etc. that you guys or online articles tell me to use. For the record, I was lossing interest in the SD card, but I had a Redmi note 8 pro, and they now have Redmi Note 17 Pro. I tried 17, 15, 14, 13, and maybe back to 12 before I found one that woud use an SD card.

I am considering getting a Redmi 15c or a Redmi A7 Pro, both of which, I am told, make provision for an SD card. The 15c appears to have a better specification than the A7 Pro, but costs less. I'm not sure how that works. There are a few other phones on my list to consider, but all of them are said have provision for an SD card. If they don't have that, they don't get on my list. I'm not sure of the difference between a SIM and an ESIM, but had assumed that an ESIM replaced the physical card. From what I read here, it doesn't. This is what I hate about so many models being available. I like Xiaomli but if I were devoted to it I'd be very unhpappy to find these phones had SD slots 2 days after I bought another phone, and after I checked the Redmi Note Pro 17, 15, 14, and 13. How am I supposed to know that A7 Pro is more or less Pro than Note Pro. > >> There are a few other phones on my list to consider, but all of them >> are said have provision for an SD card. Yes, normally. I think the physical esim must have come later for phones (all of them originally) which didn't have esim built-in. >> From what I read >> here, it doesn't. Does it matter? A physical esim takes a slot in the tray, and if there are any phones with only one slot these days, you'd have to take your regular sim out and put in the esim. > >A7 Pro has got Nano-SIM + Nano-SIM, same with 15C. I have to stop at a bookstore on the way out of the airport. Probably be tired and I hope there is no line. But it looks like they sell esim connectivity for the same price. IIUC I have to get them to send me a profile, script, program, whatever to load into the esim before I get there. And then there is Peru, where you need an esim or international roaming (which did not work for my phone) or a local friend, because you can't buy a sim there if you're not a Peruvian. It had something to do with stopping fraud.

I'm not planning to travel abroad any time soon. Last time I did was in 2013, when I visited Namibia and Botswana, and yes, buying a SIM to use in each country and changing SIMs four times at the border was a bit of a schlep, so an ESIM might be useful if I were planning to travel, but I'm not. -- Steve Hayes from Tshwane, South Africa Web: http://www.khanya.org.za/stevesig.htm Blog: http://methodius.blogspot.com E-mail - see web page, or parse: shayes at dunelm full stop org full stop uk

Given s|b is a known troll, I suspect he's trying to intimate that the only way "he" can consider using an sd card is as "adoptable storage", when almost nobody uses sd cards that way. We use them as "portable storage". What the s|b troll is likely alluding to, by playing coy games (which prove s|b is a troll) is if you encrypt the card, the encryption key remains on the phone. But almost nobody bothers with encryption on sd cards nowadays. The troll may also be alluding to the slower speed of sd cards when enryption/decryption activities occur, but again, being a troll, he never said why he asked the question. Trolls like s|b just want to play games. Given the troll is just playing his troll games, let's see how he responds.

Sigh! The point is that *anything* can die. You mentioned the phone dying. I mentioned the SD-card dying. If - as in the above scenario - your photos are on the SD-card and the SD-card dies, your photos are lost, unless you have backup. So whether or not the SD-card is encrypted is irrelevant and whether or not the phone is OK is also irrelevant. Bottom line: You need backup for (the Internal storage of) the phone *and* for the SD-card.
