#154963 — New-to-me Motoroloa phone

I've been reluctant to say what phone it is because so often some people
online will chime in that the poster made a mistake, bougth the wrong
thing.  It's one thing to give advice in advance, but another to rain on
someone's parade when he just bought something.  We'll see if anyone
here is nasty like that. 

It's a Motorola Moto G Stylus 2025.   Reconditioned or whatever Amazon
calls it.  A year old or so so the battery could be a year old.
Accubattery offers to rate it, but you have to run the battery down to
10% first and I hate doin that.   I think the battery was at 35% when it
came out of the plain white box they had it in 

8GB Ram, 128GB, which is less than the last phone but everything has
been copied in and it only used 40%. I can go another 10 years before I
use another 40%.  To get it with 256GB would have been another $200!  

gsmarena.com actually had links to Amazon, but that's good.  I don't
want the page to go out of business like seatguru.com did (airplane seat
information). 

Stylus in the name isn't there just for fun. It means it actually
includss a dumb stylus, but there is little reference to it.  I'd almost
made up my mind before I saw any reference to it. Who knows? I might
like it.  Some reviews said they had no inteerest in it, but ended up
using it a lot 


So the "new" phone arrived and it all works, and the phone looks in
pristine condition, not a scratch on it, but setting up is still a
nightmare.  Gosh I wish the new battery had fixed the old one. 

The good news is that loads of my data got saved and reloaded, even the
notes from MyPhoneExplorer-notepad, or whatever it's called.   Also my
chats.  Strangely, the photos got reloaded only to a year ago, even
though I'm paying $2/month for extra storage, but I still have all my
photos on the laptop and 2 backups of that, so I will copy any to the
phone that I feel I need to have. 

Also good that they have a user guide for my very model online, 116
pages.  I couldn't find or didn't feel the need for one for the previous
phones but this one is confusing. It even has what I think is a strange
way to turn the phone off, Vol up and Power at the same time.  Will take
two hands. ;-(   That's what the user guide says to do but there is also
a power button symbol at the bottom of the windowshade.  That requires 4
steps instead of what I'm used to, two    

In settings it says 
   Flip or DND  Flip the phone over to enable Do Not Disturb

But it doesn't say if the setting is on or off.  You have to tap to see.
Prior phones had two ways of phrasing things like this, one that meant
on and one that meant off 
Smame probllem for  Pick up to Silence. 
They were both Off and that's fine, but you have to tap to see and if it
gets changed by a gremlin or your 10-year old, it doesn't change what it
shows. --- Not all settings are mysterious like these two.  So many to
check, three hours in and have barely gotten started. 

I thought I had Maestro on my old phone, or maybe I just read about it,
but I had it on this oone and it announced it was installing 12 apps. I
couldnt' figure out hwo to stop it.  I wrote down the names of 10 and
found 9 of them.  7 or 8 were games, plus job hunter, and it won't kill
me to have 3 more apps I never use, but it's annoying.  I disable
Maestro so it won't do this again. 

Changed launcher and new one has distracting advertising 

It does have an SD slot, a sim slot,and e-sim, as Frank told me.  It has
wireless charging, which I might not use.   I bought a case with a door
over the lenses.  I never damaged the earlier phones' lenses but I do
put it in my pocket. May slow me down when i want to take a fleeting
shot. 

Keeps saying it's an AT&T phone but the Amazon ad warned about that. 

Only 128GB storage.  Cost USD $182.50.  If I'd waited 3 days, the price
went down 2 dollars. 

Anyhow, I used to have about 215 apps, and now it says I have 320.  How
did that happen.   I don't want that.

Refurbished. It is 300€ new, here.
I have bought refurbished things here, I'm happy. A printer, a computer 
display... just not tried Amazon for this.

I think it can be adjusted. In mine, the power button displays a quick 
menu with 4 options: emergency, lock, power down, reboot.

If you activate the feature, when you put the phone face down on a table 
it goes to DND mode.

If you have a folding case, it does not detect the table. Instead, put 
the phone flat on the table, open, then close by folding the phone side 
over the cover.

I think it can be made to beep or vibrate when activating DND.

There is an app in new Motorolas that, based on your profile, installs 
apps that it thinks you may like. You have to be careful with the 
wording, be careful to just read the offering and not install anything 
you really do not want. I don't really know the name of the tool.

I bought my last laptop from them.  They have a big selection.

Do you have a Motorola?   Pressing my power button alone does almost
nothing when the screen is on and only brings up the lock screen when
the screen is off.  The user guide says Powr and Vol up and that does
bring up Emergency, Off, or Restart.   -- The previou sphone had 4
choices and I can't remember what the 4th one was. 

So it works as intended but takes two hands this way.  Good thing I'm
not riding a bicycle when i do this.

I didn't say yes to anything when Maestro started downloading, and it
was proud of itself and gave its name.

It takes a long press in mine. It also has the fingerprint sensor, which 
is handy.

Mine just vibrates with long press on power. But I guess that's because
I disabled GenAI stuff and got rid of the "Google Assistant".

But check this:

Settings->Gestures->"Press & hold power button"

Sadly it only offers two options (wouldn't it be better to offer more?)
but it does allow switching between "Digital assistant" and "Power
menu". (I myself will probably leave it at the former given I personally
prefer making the power menu less easy to trigger.)

That did it. I didn't even think of looking in seetings.  Yes, I have to
check out all the settings, icluding those for each app I have not used
before (and those I have used because I don't think my settings got
imported from the previous phone.)

Mine offers 3, Digital assistant, Power menu (those 3 choices), and No
action.  So that's not much better than your two.  Who would choose No
Action.

I saw a number some place.  If I see it again, I'll write down where I
saw it.   Okay, this was easy.  Settings .... Apps... See all 324 apps.
I guess it will show a list so I will go through and try to find the 100
new ones.  I'll get back to you in a day or two.

I have about a thousand packages on my 64GB phone, where about half of them
I personally installed myself, so be careful wth those numbers.

To me, a phone with "only" 88 or 100 "apps" is likely just the stuff that
comes with the phone, given the distinction between a user or system app.

If you really want to know the number of packages installed, there are
better ways than the Android GUI (which is notoriously inaccurate).

The refurbs I buy from a local shop here are often minor damages to the 
box or the device, like a scratch. They classify the kind of damage. 
They are not used stuff. True, the battery will be older.

I don't think they replace the battery in phones or laptops.  

The desktop I bought just had a CR2032, so I think I"m okay with that. 

The laptop I bought was 4 years old, but of course I don't know how much
it was used. It has a slot for a smart card so I think it was sold to a
corporation that uses smart cards. I think there is a lot of waste in
corporations, and they might have bought 20 and assigned 14 full time
and a couple part of the time, and then traded them all in when they got
older than they wanted.  Maybe I got lucky, maybe I didnt.  But I keep
the thing plugged in 99% of the time, so maybe it doesn't matter.  

The phone was avaiable April 17, 2025, so the battery is only 16 months
old. I've got 6 years before it swells and bursts.

Trouble is battery age is also measured in the amount of discharge/recharge
 cycles. So if the previous owner was a heavy user the battery could be worn
 out much faster...

I remember disabling some feature that claimed usage of the power 
button. The next compromise was the button opening a 4 item fast menu.

Maybe I can do that.   I believe that all phones would have things I
don't like and do like, so so far, I'm happy
