In defence of physical pill boxes, the added advantage is that they also
tell you whether you've taken the pill or not. An app reminder can be
easily ignored or not be within earshot.

I know my dad is often not sure whether he took his pills or not and has
to count backwards from what's left in the packet.

You could use a calendar reminder to tell you prepare your box for the
next week.

I take 5 different meds in the morning and 4 in the evening. Do you know
of a pillbox that can handle that array??

Yes, counting backwards! I know it well. :-) I would like a pillbox that
has a two-dimensional array of compartments: date vs meds, and hold a
week's worth. That way, no counting. But I would have to remember what
day it is. :-)

Writing the day on the palm in the morning
and invalidate the previous day mark.. :-)

I quickly googled yesterday and there seemed to be a huge range of
options. Lets see...

How about this one? Obviously it depends on the size of the pills, but
this one looks like it should be able to fit 4-5 per compartment:

I think you're in the US, but I'd be surprised there wasn't something
similar over on your side of the pond.

I think a calendar app might help, there! ;)

Now that's nifty (if a little expensive for someone on an invalid's benefit
such as myself). If only it came in a 10 day version with movable 'day'
labels! (My 'restricted meds' are dispensed at 10 day intervals, government
legislation attempting to prevent misuse, sale of prescription meds or
suicide, accidental or otherwise.)

I know, I could likely work around the dispensing period using a weekly
system but it wouldn't be as elegant. Current system consists of multiple
cheap 'morning, noon and evening' type containers and a couple cheap (~$5)
digital watches with alarms set sitting on my desk. My android device is a
tablet (Samsung Tab 3 8") and spends most of its time in standby.

So, maybe stick with your containers but add one or more google now
repeating reminders for when it's time to take something. Those reminders
ring incessantly until you tap done or delay 1 hour.
