In defence of physical pill boxes, the added advantage is that they also 
tell you whether you've taken the pill or not. An app reminder can be 
easily ignored or not be within earshot.

I know my dad is often not sure whether he took his pills or not and has 
to count backwards from what's left in the packet.

You could use a calendar reminder to tell you prepare your box for the 
next week.
