Useful list. Not sure I'd be bothered about NFC, magnetometer, or fingerprint sensor, and I'd weight the camera more by quality than pixel count, but basically a good starting point. Both PC and 'phone on same account. Clicked download on PC; sounds of downloading (I have an audio monitor on the PC), then (on PC) says installed. Nothing obvious on 'phone. Hang on - somehow wifi had been turned off on 'phone - back on; something happening - yes! Swiftkey now appears alongside Google voice in the list of input devices. And if selected, and I try a text - a keyboard appears. Warnings, both on PC and 'phone, that this app. can steal data. I didn't complete the installation process (didn't choose "faster lookup" or something like that), but I still get a keyboard when I want; I'm not sure if it _is_ sending everything I type outside or not. His phone has 512MB RAM and 4GB ROM (which means there is probably about 2GB available for apps). It also lacks LTE data which severely limits its functionality, especially as carriers move to VoLTE. I also tend to use phones for longer than most people, but eventually have to capitulate and buy something newer. Even an el-cheapo Moto E5 Play, at $130 has 2GB RAM, 16GB ROM, LTE, and Android 8.0. I can understand the original poster's frustration with an Android 4.2 device. Newer versions of Android are vastly improved, and of course Android has a lot of capabilities that iOS lacks.

My oldest android tablet runs 5.1, which is still "ok" for most things, the UI just about manages not to feel ancient, I wouldn't want to run anything older.

My frustration is not _I think_ due to the Android's age, but to the fact that it is extremely different to Windows in the way it works. _Not_ necessarily worse, just different enough that I can spend _ages_ trying to figure out how to do things I do without a second thought in Windows - and I don't think a later Android would be any "better" in that regard. (And yes, I do realise I'm in an Android 'group!) Though having it possible for the built-in keyboard disappear altogether _does_ seem a rather drastic failing. I think I _could_ disable it in Windows, but at least a power-down cycle would make the machine find and install it again. (OK, I know I'm not comparing like with like - I'm talking about a real physical keyboard in Windows, and an on-screen one in Android - but still.) -- J. P. Gilliver.
