I don't know ... I've met my share of converts, almost always more strongly
religious than those who just grew up in the faith in question.

What's this "they" refer to? Converts? (I'd agree.) Or the titular
Religious arguments? (I'd replace "boring" by "contentious".)

Since this NG is for Android, there shouldn't be any religious
arguments here. Those of other sects, like Windows and Apple, should
stick to their forums, and save their proselytising effforts for a
more neutral ng.

I agree with both posters, above. This ng used to have a relatively high
signal to noise ratio, but over the last few months it's gotten worse.

My kill files have never been so busy. I just wish the troll would stop

My filter must be effective because I have no idea who you're talking

It has a subject line I had not seen before.

It wasn't in reply to anything - nothing was quoted. So it is in
effect a new thread with a new subject line, not even a "Was: Re xxxx"

<sigh> I started this thread as a general comment on recent long-running
arguments without actually participating in them. The hope is that
people will argue for a SHORT time and then just let it go as a
fruitless endeavor.

I watched a valuable group die because of similar stuff which has been
running since 1999. The only remaining participants just fling shit
back and forth. Goddam shame.

OK, I don't read every thread, only those whose subject lines look
interesting, so I must have missed the ones you were referring to.

Indeed. I've seen several groups die like that.

After checking it out, I see the reason I don't see those trolling
threads is because I have crossposts filtered out. In my experience,
there is rarely if ever anything good come out of such crossposts,
especially if they come from a group about a "rival" OS
(misc.phone.mobile.iphone) or completely unrelated subject
(sci.electronics.repair). Those who crosspost like that are only trying
to stir up controversy, not have a real discussion.

sometimes cross-posting is valid, but in this case, he does it to troll.

I allow up to 3 crossposts, but I have an extensive list of groups that
are notorious troll holes, the presence of which kill the thread
immediately. High on the list are any OS "advocacy" groups. I think I
would be just as happy if I killed even 1 or 0 crossposts. I might miss
something legit, but I don't feel obligated to read everything anyway.

(1) Sometimes people do convert, just very seldom on usenet.

(2) They start out boring and after a while they get worse... that's
when you start RTFM to learn about kill-filters. <g>
