Everywhere I've seen requires it. ask for naked dsl or dry loop. <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naked_DSL> A naked DSL (a.k.a. standalone or dry loop DSL) is a digital subscriber line (DSL) without a PSTN (analogue telephony) service ‹ or the associated dial tone. In other words, only a standalone DSL Internet service is provided on the local loop.

Verizon keeps doing various things to get people to FIOS so they can take away copper, but I've put anti-tank barricades in my front yard to keep them from doing that here. The DSL is cheap, but the phone service is expensive. My friend moved to Carroll county where she had fewer choices iiuc and ended up with Comcast cable for TV and phone, but phone meant, and I didn't see this coming, nor did she, I think, VOIP phone, and she says it's terrible. Interruptions and I don't know what else, even after she's complained and they've tried to fix it. She's moved to her cell phone except for junk calls. So I think I should find something cheaper than what I have, but I don't want inferior service. Bev, I can't make up my mind or get ready by the 29th. Won't they have a repeated or continuing offer that will make you some money and get me a discount, instead of having to do t hings this month. And Bev if you're using internet for Oooma, WHAT ARE YOU USING FOR INTERNEt? Like Steve, I'm using phone wires, which I don't think I can give up on if I want DSL. And to give up on DSL means Comcast cable or satellite, I think. Or vonage whatever that is. And Bev, DO YOUR PHONES PLUG IN LIKE PHONES??? Because I've got things working just the way I want it, a base station and three cordless extensions. Well the base station is the only thing that really plugs in, with a modular phone jack, and house current. Will that still work? One of them seemed to be breaking so I bought 3 more as spares, before they are no longer avaiable even used, so I can last, frankly until I die. The last thing I want to be doing when I'm 95 and have lumbago is looking for a replacement cordless phone, or worse yet, redoing the whole ssytem. (I've also got my wireless speakers the way I want them except I need one or two more transmitters for when the current one fails. I don't think my TV system will stay the same for the next 25 years, but I can't predict the changes either. I'm good for 3 or 4 years now.) >Steve Hayes

I'm very happy with it. I'd like to make a complete break from the cable company but the only choice for fast internet is the cable company. Verizon hasn't made FIOS available in Brookhaven Township where I live and they say they have no interest in doing it in the future. East of the township, FIOS is available. I stopped using cable TV service a couple of years ago. I got frustrated with the new cable boxes. The older Scientific Atlanta boxes were bad enough, particularly the DVR units that would always breakdown. I was replacing them every year. They had internal hard drives, the recordings were not on the cable company's servers. The replacement Samsung boxes were better in some respects - smaller and DVR was on the company servers so you needed only one DVR unit but could watch recordings in any room. But the worst thing about those boxes was how long it took to change a channel. It was almost five seconds which may not seem long but it is. I finally tossed them and got DirecTV and have been very happy. When I move to TN next year, I'll keep DirecTV for one reason - hockey. I can get MSG network which broadcasts the NY Rangers on satellite but it's not offered on a local cable company outside the NY tri-state area.

DOCSIS is not the same but I'm not familiar with that. As for those Samsung boxes being terribly lagging, that was a software issue. They put the boxes into use too soon. They've improved the software but too late for me to stay with their service.

So how much do they charge for your DSL, and what company/region is this? I can't imagine that they won't raise my DSL charge to 2 or 3 times the current price if I dropped their phone service.

We pay about $US 63.00 (57 Euro) for 100Gb data a month (more costs extra) and unlimited phone calls to South African POTS numbers. That also includes 100 minutes of cell calls on each of two separate SIM cards and 100 GB of data on a gizmo that one can plug into a laptop when travelling within South Africa -- we used it last year in places where no Wi-Fi was available. I live in a small town in Iowa, and my only choices are POTS DSL or Dish. I get 12mb/sec down and .7mb/sec up for $76 USD, but have to pay for any long distance voice calls. I have a feature phone I use instead for that.

Tired of telemarketing calls so I just ordered this from Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00U1PPWDO/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Anybody know if I just did something stupid?
So far I haven't received any telemarketing calls on my cell, but we get
dozens/day on the "landline" phone, mostly of the 'dead air' variety.

It depends. Did you order it within 14 hours and choose Same Day Delivery? It sounds pretty good to me. Unless you have more than 1500 people spamming you. I only get about 3 to 10 a week, and I don't know what numbers they are, or I'd get one. .... well, maybe not. The answer to the first question wasn't as good as I thought it would be, but that's because I really want everyone to get through. If I gave out my number, I'd just say to punch zero and call back. I checked all 3 answers. Sometimes answers directly contradict each other. >So far I haven't received any telemarketing calls on my cell, but we get >dozens/day on the "landline" phone, mostly of the 'dead air' variety. YOu must be slow to pick up. They dial 5 or 10 at the same time and whoever answers first wins.
