I doubt if we could know by now, but if there were, and if it put
Franken in office, it could have been with only a small number of
fraudulent votes. "Oh, it's only a FEW bits of fraud, it doesn't really
matter..." Yeah, it does.

"If, "could have been", yada, yada, yada. More innuendo and
supposition. There was absolutely no indication, nor accusation of
fraud. Drop the ifs, it happened and obviously was fair since there
was no arrests.

Just like the Florida vote it just had to be counted and recounted.
Face it, he won.... and did you notice that Franken won re-election
six years later? Hmmm. The favorite with voters twice.

If there had been any fraudulent votes, Franken would probably have won
by a bigger margin.

Seriously? That's your justification.
How about this nonunion everyman shop.

Of course I am, oh wait! Probably.
If Coleman had won, there would not be Obamacare or at least not as the

Sure, but it isn't possible to work out in advance that a particular
result is going to be that close and organise 156 people who
know someone who has moved away and won't be voting so
you can claim to be them and vote instead of them. And even
if that was possible, the other major's goons could do that too
so it wouldn't change the result unless they did it much more
badly than your lot did and did it with a lot more than 156 people.

I'm not interested in one possibility. I'm interested in "all"
possibilities. In a edge of the razor-blade thin election in a red
state, I'd be deeply suspicious if a Republican won. As it was, Franken
won and Obamacare became the law of the land. Anyone who tells you
different including those posting with liberal cites in here are full
of it.

But its only the close results where there would be any point in
attempting vote fraud, so they wont be doing vote fraud just in
case it turns out to be a close result, because its impossible to
get enough fraudulent votes to matter.

Not just those. Half of eligible voters don't bother and you probably
know your neighbours. Not even that is necessary, you just need to make
sure you come first. On the downside, your neighbours are NOT a good
choice. Some attendent might recognize you if you come several times,
spread it over several polling stations and you're safe.

I'll probably do that one day (and not vote under my own name) and then
identify myself just to show the system up, not asking for ID is
criminal neglect IMHO.

But fraudulently voting that way has a very high risk
that the real voter will show up and find that someone
has already voted claiming to be them and so it will
be clear that a lot of fraudulent voting is going on.

Not if you vote before someone who does try to vote,
someone may well remember who first claimed to be
that voter, particularly if you do much of it and you
would have to do that to make any useful difference
to the result.

Not in mine, particularly with those who find it hard to
have photo ID. Most jurisdictions don't have the european
police state system that requires them to always have ID.

Actually in congested large cities, you probably don't know your
neighbors.

And in rural/suburban parts you probably don't know enough neighbors
to make a difference, as these parts are higher in (die-hard)
conservative voters. It would be an absurd amount of effort and risk
to exploit an insignificant vote.

Impossible in the US.  US voters cannot choose their polling station;
it's assigned based on address.

Which is unfortunate, because another republican tactic involves
providing a disproportionately small number of booths in regions where
the progressive turnout is high, forcing a 2+ hour queue wait. The
inconvenience ultimately drives off (progressive) voters.

> not asking for ID is criminal neglect IMHO.

Including absentee voters?

Should in-person voters be subjected to a higher standard of id proof
than absentee voters?

Not strictly true. I can't speak for other states, but in Texas, for
early voting, you can go to any voting location.
http://www.votetexas.gov/voting/when/#early-voting

Under Texas law you do have to provide a picture ID, but that
requirement is was voided just the other day by the Court of Appeals.
Stay tuned for more litigation. For more, see

Same here. That's what I meant: Impersonate people with different
addresses. Also reduces the risk of an attendent knowing and recognizing
you.

But I also accept the other agument stated here, that it is probabaly a
lot of effort and risk if you do it on a scale large enough to make a
difference.

Very easily, by asking those who register voters how often
they have ever had anyone say that someone else has voted
claiming to be them, or where someone who is dead has voted.

There is actually by checking whether those who have
voted have social security numbers after the election.
Sure, a few well have fraudulently obtained social
security numbers, but that is a quite minor issue.

No you don’t if you don’t want any govt services
and a social security number is no use to vote with
and that is all some have.

But the point is that the sort of voter who doesn’t bother
to vote but is driven to the polling booth and home again
by the party that wants them to vote who doesn’t have a
photo ID because it is no used to them won't be bothering.

Why would this person care about voting? If he went to the nearest
library and asked the librarian if she knew of someone who could teach
him to read, I bet she'd find someone. Ex-cons generally can't vote
anyway.

Shit happens, and not all of it can be fixed.

Indeed. I heard about that. Even before that I know that in some places
the former felon can petition the court and possibly get his voting
rights restored. That also would -- presumably -- make them eligible
for jury service. The one former felon I know regards the jury service
prohibition as a positive boon.
