No soldering. The entire damned phone is cheap on ebay. I got a screen and LCD for under $30. Plug them bad boys in cold and carefully, then energize. That is how I do micro-USB, regardless of what it is a part of.

IF Samsung or anyone else adds more, they are superfluous, and if you look at the schematic images google provides, you will see "sense" lines and the like, tied to ground and such. Micro-USB is five pins with just such a ground tied "sense" "pin" added. Still, no dozen. And Still conforming to the ONLY 4 pins which appear on the standard USB plug on the other end of the cable. So I guess 7 pins simply "magically disappear" into the twilight zone.

I replaced both the LCD and the touch screen on an S3 that was given to me, and I only had 2000 parts left over when I was done. Can you guess which ones they were? And yes, I am a micro-electronic assembly expert (per se), up to and including wire bonding.

I use ESFile Manager (Explorer?) to transfer files to the samba subdirectory on my linux computer (one button for 'select all') using either FTP or <something else> via wifi. Some photos come through garbled, though, so it's more reliable if I just use a USB cable. I haven't tried transferring anything to my windows machine. Because I'm not a security expert, I'm afraid any time I am asked to set up a *server* on Linux. I prefer *not* to create a new server, which just opens the door wider, with respect to security concerns. Having said that, apparently I *already* have an ssh server, because, while I couldn't even *find* a file-selection GUI in "Turbo Client" on Android, the app did appear to connect seamlessly to Linux (it showed me my /tmp folder on Linux from Android). So, since I *already* appear to have an ssh server running, I think I'll use that, if I can only get the Android side to give me a GUI to select a set of files or folders.

Well, you could turn the server on only when you need it and turn it off when you're done. It's only a security concern while it's running. And I believe it can be made to be open only to your LAN and not from the Internet, but don't ask me how. > Having said that, apparently I *already* have an ssh server, > because, while I couldn't even *find* a file-selection GUI in > "Turbo Client" on Android, the app did appear to connect > seamlessly to Linux (it showed me my /tmp folder on Linux from > Android). ssh is Secure Shell, similar to telnet. By itself it's not for transferring files, although I think it can be used with other protocols for encryption purposes. This isn't your solution. > So, since I *already* appear to have an ssh server running, I > think I'll use that, if I can only get the Android side to give me > a GUI to select a set of files or folders.

Oh oh... that's important if SSH isn't the right approach since others suggested it, and I had presumed it worked for them. Luckily there were other suggested approaches, but I can only test one at a time ...

PCs use linux OR windows :-) It's for sharing among computers, and somebody set it up for me so I can't help at all. Somebody here will be able to, though. -- Cheers, Bev "Qui custodiet ipsos custodes?" --Juvenal

In fact, here in the states, you pretty much can't even buy a laptop or desktop (non-server) PC that doesn't come with Windows, even if you want to put Linux on it. But in the *context* I was using it, I thought it was clear that PC is the commonly accepted (old form, I know) for Windows PC. Anyway, I stand corrected (and sit corrected also).

There is more than one "anyway" that applies to you, bub.

I will plonk him the moment I send this, but, clearly he has an agenda which has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the topic at hand. I don't mind the guy having an agenda; but he can post his agenda in his own thread, as this one is about Android more so than Linux (since the Linux side just works).
