I had an on-screen keyboard. I have done something. It is now nowhere to
be found. I have done power-down cycles.

Under Settings, in KEYBOARD & INPUT METHODS, I see:

        KEYBOARD & INPUT METHODS
        ---------------------------------------------------------
        Default
        Automatic - Google voice typing
        ---------------------------------------------------------
                Google voice typing             ---#-
        [/]                                     -#---
                Automatic                       ---#-

        SPEECH
        ---------------------------------------------------------

etc., where [/] is a little tick box, which is greyed out presumably as
it's the only option.

When I go into anything that needs a keyboard, I get a microphone which
is replaced by a triangle, and "Connection problem".

What have I done that disabled the (on-screen) keyboard - so completely
that it's not even listed? I can't find a mention of a keyboard anywhere
- certainly no apps with a keyboard in their name. I don't _think_ I've
_deleted_ it (can they even _be_ deleted? Seems a bit daft if so); I've
done a forced stop on lots of things, but I'd have thought a power-down
would have re-started any of those that were needed. (I didn't stop any
with keyboard in the name anyway.)

I've googled 'till I'm blue in the fingers; _nearly_ all the solutions
say go to keyboard and input methods and select it there. Which is
absolutely useless if it isn't there to be selected. A very few say
download a new keyboard (Gboard or something like that?), but:
(a) why would I need to download what I already had
(b) I can't anyway, as I have no way of telling the play store what to
look for.

I haven't yet tried a factory reset, as I'd _rather_ not lose all my
data.

I hate android ... (iOS not much better mind!) I'm a Windows user.

Perhaps downloading a new keyboard would work. You can plug a USB 
keyboard into most Android phones using an OTG adapter to be able to 
enter data on Google Play. Bluetooth keyboards also work. You can also 
download a new keyboard by logging into Google Play on your computer and 
telling it to download a keyboard to your device.

Despite your long post, you never mentioned what phone you have.

I don't have an OTG or a Bluetooth 'board.

I'm going to look at the link in Andy's post now to see if it tells me 
how to do that. I'm a very inexperienced user of a smartphone.

Not sure where you are, but an OTG adapter is very cheap.

Whether such an odd model with such an old version of Android supports 
OTG is another story.

But pushing a keyboard from the Google Play Store on your computer 
should definitely work and doesn't cost anything.

Look up the phone in gsmarena.com and it will say if it has it.  If it

Go to Settings, System, Language & Input, Virtual Keyboard.
There you will see what the default is, whether it's SwiftKey or not, 
and an option to add one.

I go to Settings, where I find Language & input (under PERSONAL rather 
than System, but it's there). When I go into that, I see that the 
default is Google voice typing, which is also the only one listed - no 
"add" option.

I've had a look at an old phone; android 4.4.2. That uses  Google voice 
typing, and it works fine without voice input (which you can switch off, 
incidentally). I also have Gboard, but that's greyed out, presumably by 
Google and its totalitarian ways.

I'm not sure how on mine google voice got turned on, and the internal 
keyboard turned off. The voice recognition actually worked quite well 
until it suddenly stopped working altogether (presumably due to 
something I did while trying to get my keyboard back).

You can't remember its name; and you can't find any sign of it being 
uninstalled.
That seems to close the door firmly to getting it back.

Just how well do you remember it?
All I can think of is to try several until you hit upon the one.

I am pretty sure it wasn't present as an "app", but as part of the 
original 'phone/Android/whatever configuration. As such, I don't think 
I'm likely to find it among add-on app.s.

(In the absence of getting it back, the Swiftkey one seems acceptable. I 
must make clear: I'm not a keen smartphone user, and wasn't when I 
bought it: I initially bought it because it seemed that a smartphone was 
something everyone should have. But the initial learning curve was/is 
too great - and the rapid development [and thus, more or less, 
_obligation_ to replace the 'phone every two or three years at most] has 
put me off considerably. Compared to my laptops, the upgrade cycle is 
too fast - not just cost, though I resent that too, but the constant 
learning. I probably shouldn't _be_ in this 'group (-:.)

Android is a doddle after Windows. You know enough to just play around 
with it and learn the ropes. It'll come easily enough.

A good smart phone with at least 32GB local memory (plus, usually, an SD 
card) is almost indispensable these days.
Games to play while waiting, MP3s to carry around, and a phone that's 
usually much cheaper than a landline.

Stay with it.

Yes, but in a couple of years you'll laugh at anyone still using a 64G 
'phone with Android 15.

I read while waiting, my SatNav (GPS) plays mp3s, and my landline is 
free evenings and weekends. (Granted, one of my SIMs is cheaper during 
the day - though the provider it's on has about no coverage at my home.)

Yes, but how long before that 2-3 year old 'phone will be laughed at by 
most of those here, (a) necessitating the expenditure of yet another 100 
pounds, (b) the generation of a redundant - but still working perfectly 
- 'phone?

My Windows PCs, in contrast, last me many years, and remain usable for 
what I want to do with them.
