I think your guess is probably along the correct lines because when I use
the "New Pipe" app on Android as my youtube app, I never see ads.

But when I use the youtube app on iOS, I almost *always* see ads.

On Linux and Windows I *never* see ads, but I have a hosts file on both
that is many tens of thousands of lines long, so it pretty much blocks all
the bad things that have happened to others so it's not a fair comparison
since it has the advantage of knocking out entire domains forever.

This is off topic, but I'm responding to what you wrote above.

I don't know how they *protect* that content you speak of from being
downloaded, but I do know that, so far, in scores of downloads using the
free youtube-lookalike app from the F-Droid sit, named "New Pipe"
(org.schabi.newpipe), I haven't seen a single ad nor has a single audio
file extraction been in the least difficult to download, in its entirety.

I haven't tried to download any videos (despite nospam's erroneous
insistence that I have), but I would suspect that the video would be just
as trivial to download as the audio was to extract.

If you (or anyone else) can post a youtube link where the content seems to
be protected, I'll be glad to punch that youtube link into the New Pipe
freeware youtube-lookalike app, to see if it can download the content as
easily as it does for the two-hour documentaries I typically extract the
audio from using that app.

Here's a link to the NewPipe description:
https://github.com/theScrabi/NewPipe

Since I don't even have a Google Play account on my Android device, I got
mine from the no-registration-needed F-Droid site:
https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=org.schabi.newpipe

Anyone who *buys* the youtube red, is, apparently, a potential customer of
the free youtube red equivalent, according to this article:
https://www.maketecheasier.com/open-source-youtube-app-android/

Apparently New Pipe doesn't use a Youtube API, so maybe that's how it gets
around the MARKETING restrictions?
https://newpipe.en.uptodown.com/android

Luckily, you can get the APK almost anywhere:
http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/thescrabi/newpipe/newpipe-0-7-5-release/newpipe-0-7-5-android-apk-download/

BTW, as an aside, if similar open-source functionality exists on iOS,
someone please let us know because it's pretty much exactly what anyone
would want who wants to download either the video (which I don't do) or the
audio (which works perfectly). Or, they can shell out $10 bucks to buy the
free app from Youtube MARKETING. :)

I just use keepvid.com which even provides a simple applet. Have yet to find

I just tried the link I posted to Horace for an
Adele song. something downloaded, but it didn't
play. Generally there's nothing I want from
Youtube that I can't get. I'm not interested in
pop music. The things I do want seem to be
unrestricted because they're private, non-
commercial recordings.

I do sometimes want something from Vimeo
without having to play it. DH can't do that.
Keppvid says a script is needed. Their site is
a bit confusing. They say one can just enter
a URL to download, but the Adele song didn't
seem to work. The installed version, which
could presumably use the special script, won't
install on XP and I find no indication on their
site of what the price is. (That's some nerve,
to advertise "try it free!" and yet hide the price.)

Like you, I don't do songs which is probably what most people do, so, I
can't say much about how to download them.

What "I" do is listen to long (two-hour) documentaries, but I like to
listen to them at night when I'm going to sleep so my challenge was
listening to them offline and with the screen blanked.

There were multiple methods that worked, depending on the platform, but one
method that works fine is to simply extract the audio from the Youtube app
using a free YouTube Red replacement app on the mobile device.

That free app youtubered replacement app is called "New Pipe" and it has a
headphone button to play audio in the background, but I don't have
headphones.

So I just extract the audio from any video I want, and then I play that
audio offline.

Here are my two test files:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfRq-JeUCSM (WWII documentary)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9XzLzMAQ-Q (History of the World)

It is a simple tap-tap-done process to download the audio in NewPipe:
http://i.cubeupload.com/ybEXS1.jpg

Here is a screenshot of the first of those, in Android "NewPipe".
http://i.cubeupload.com/G2DcHM.jpg

Tapping the "download" icon brings up the choice of video or audio:
http://i.cubeupload.com/fBB7vI.jpg

Once I tap that icon, I can kill NewPipe as the download occurs in the
background (which is the only way such a large file should download):
http://i.cubeupload.com/KBPgcG.jpg

The audio is downloaded directly to my sd card in the directory:
 /extSdCard/data/audio/documentary/{name of documentary}.m4a
http://i.cubeupload.com/CR6xjY.jpg

Like all decent apps, I can easily download *multiple* large audio files:
http://i.cubeupload.com/rbVTGb.jpg

It would be supremely wasteful to download the video so I select audio:

Multiple downloads can proceed in the background simultaneously:

With Keepvid they have different formats you can download... be careful not
to download a "video only" format... assuming you meant it would not play
sound by "not play."

It worked on the second try. Thanks. I downloaded
the 480p and apparently something went wrong. I
got a file named videoplayback.mp4 that wouldn't play.
But I tried the 720p and that worked. good to know.

Now if I can only find a free solution for Vimeo that
doesn't require script, Flash, or otherwise playing the
video in the browser. (Keepvid say they can do it, but
it seems to require their paid software [unknown cost
and won't run on XP] plus an add-on.) I wouldn't
entirely rule out paid software, but this is not a critical
thing for me. I just find Vimeo links occasionally that
I'd like to download. And there seems to be a cat-and-
mouse tradition: Sites like Youtube regularly change
their code, breaking download extensions. It wouldn't
make much sense to buy software that might be outdated
in 6 months.

videos on vimeo often have a download option, but if not, there are
vimeo extensions and download sites, just like there are for youtube.

no they don't.

first of all, the extensions are usually free, and second, they get
updated if there are any changes, usually for browser compatibility,
not site issues.

Dunno how to tell since I almost never use a browser when there is a
dedicated app that does the job better.

Truth be told, other than browsing web pages, there's not much a browser
does better than a dedicated app anyway.

But, if I were forced to use a browser extension (or plugin), I'd seek out
open source extensions (and I'd stay away from plugins).

Odd. It does require a Jave applet and I have seen that be flakey on first
run... but other than that it has worked well for me.

I do not do that often, but can't you just right click on the video and
download it? You can stop it playing if you want.

Does require having its scripts on I would assume.

I have used keepvid for some time and so far it seems stable.

The source code contains code for a Java
applet that's marked obsolete. There's also
unused code for an XML ActiveX control. But
the current page operation is clean and efficient.
It uses server-side functionality and doesn't
require anything at all from the visitor. No
Java, script, cookies, ActiveX. I'm using it in
Pale Moon with all such functionality, and even
3rd-party files, blocked. Just the tool I was
looking for.

Thanks. I had not seen the Java popups in a while but had not really thought
about it. Good to know.

I realize you're using a "browser", which is probably the hardest way to
accomplish this task, but, since you don't have a mobile device, it's what
you have available to you.

Seems to me the way the dedicated apps go about this problem is that they
don't use *any* Youtube APIs if they can help it.

Specifically, the New Pipe description says so anyway:
https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=org.schabi.newpipe
Does not use "the proprietary YouTube-API or any of Google's (proprietary)
play-services. NewPipe only parses the YouTube website in order to gain the
information it needs."

So what you need, IMHO, is a browser plugin or extension that follows the
same open-source approach of not using any proprietary Youtube or Google
APIs.

Which browser plugins or extensions do that?
I have no idea.
But someone else here might.

Download Helper works most of the time. That's
a Firefox extension. You don't need to feel
sorry for me that I have no mobile device. I'm
very happy that way. :)

I'm also glad you're using an extension and not a plugin.

It's a link to an Adele song. I picked it because all

trivial to download directly from youtube, and in 720p too.
