#35773 — Google hangouts dialer nastiness

SubjectGoogle hangouts dialer nastiness

Moto G #2, android 6.0

Yesterday I needed to make a phone call (a rare occurrence). When I
chose the number from my contacts list, hangouts insisted on attempting
to make a wifi call. I have no data plan and had no accessible wifi. I
tried several times, but was unable to use the actual PHONE to make the
call.

I can stop or uninstall hangouts and/or the hangouts dialer, but not
merely disable it. There seems to be no way to tell the phone to
actually USE THE GODDAM PHONE.

What am I missing?

I'm assuming that you have a plan that actually allows you to make phone
calls, so why don't you just use the dialer that's included with the
Android OS?

While I've only played with it briefly, my understanding is that the
Hangouts dialer is intended to make calls over WiFi when you don't have
access to the cell network.

That's what I did. The contact list came up and I called. Hangouts
apparently shares the list and took over. I didn't try hand-dialing,
but I wouldn't have known the number and YES I have trouble remembering
a 10-digit number long enough to dial it.

You'd think! That's what I wanted it for.

There may be more that one contact list.

Also, the google contact list may (I think) hold different methods of
calling. For using the phone you would have to tap on the phone number
of the entry. I don't use hangouts, though. I use whatsap, which also
wants to do the call and I don't.

Odd. I have Hangouts and the Hangouts dialer installed on my phone(s)
and that's never happened.

Sounds like this might be something the folks at the Hangouts forum
might be able to help with, since it's something you'll likely run into
again.

In the dialer, try dialing the *name* of your contact rather than the
number. That should bring up a list of matches as you type. Select the one
want to dial.

Maybe you have Hangouts set as default dialler? I'm not sure if you can
do that - but try going to settings > apps > Hangouts and see if it has

It said I had some but wouldn't tell me what they were. I certainly
wouldn't have deliberately done that. Bastards. I cleared them, which
seemed to allow me to use the 'phone' part. I wonder if I'll have to do
this process again if I choose to use the hangouts dialer again...
Probably :-(

I really hate the way google insists on controlling everything. I want
different accounts for different purposes, but it really WANTS me to do
everything with one account and I have to go to a lot of trouble to NOT
do that.

I know, how much did I pay for it blablablabla...

Not unless you let it. If you use Hangouts and want to dial someone it
will (I'm guessing as I don't use Hangouts - but it's normally what
happens) ask you which app you want it to dial with and if you want to
use it once or every time. Tell it once, and it won't set a default. It
could also happen from elsewhere - if you tell it to dial a contact from
within your contacts file and it asks your which app to use don't tell
it to use Hangouts, tell it to use the normal dialler and to use it
every time. It's certainly something along those lines, anyway.

I run several different accounts on my tablet - some from my own domains
and not with Google at all - without difficulty. I do stick to one
account on the phone, purely so if anyone wants to e-mail me whilst I'm
out and about they know which one to use. If you have multiple Google
accounts you can have them all together in one log-in and just select
which one you want to use - there's an "add another account" facility
which lets you select which one to use each time you log in to Google -
maybe that's the way to go?

> I know, how much did I pay for it blablablabla...

I'm not impressed by that argument - free or paid for, it should still
be configurable to do what you want - not what they want. If often
doesn't work that way though and, like you, I find it quite irritating
to be lectured by someone along those lines :-)

The Motorola dialer just dials. No choice. The hangouts dialer
likewise. Maybe I should get a different 'phone' dialer...

Tell it once, and it won't set a default. It

Separate 'dial' icons on the home screen/list of apps.

Nearly annoying is being harangued because I normally run as root.
Screw the whiners -- it's MY machine, I'm behind a firewall, and I've
been doing it since 1994 with no problems so far except those caused by
the haranguers.

I might be willing to try Ubuntu (I'm always happy to let somebody else
do the work) but I'm not going to spend my life doing sudos or alias
every command I use because I do a LOT of stuff in xterms. Yeah, I
know, there are workarounds, but GODDAMMIT I don't want to deal with
nannies!

Plus having to do a shitpot of installation and copying, of course. Did
I mention the laziness factor?

The lazy way to Linux is Linux Mint in one of it's forms (I like the
Mate front end and the Debian version rather than the Ubuntu version -
but only because my old laptop is so ancient and Debian is more suited
to it). It's theoretically possible to run a system from the GUI
without as much as a sudo - but that seems to annoy the purists who
think if it isn't excruciatingly difficult it isn't real Linux. They'd
have been proud of me as a realtive newbie this week though - I've being
installing Realtek drivers for an "ac" external WiFi device from scratch
to try to connect to a 5MHz signal. It connects but won't talk to the
internet much - so I guess my old lappy can't take it. However, this is
a long way from mobile.android.

Bob

Rule 1: Use the distro that your technical support staff (otherwise
known as "husband") uses. He's a luddite and has been using slackware
since Linux was a pup. Anything nasty and complicated I turn over to
him. He refuses to touch windows, so I'm pretty much on my own with my
winmachine.

Easy is always good. The CLI command is frequently way easier and
faster than the GUI equivalent. There's always a tradeoff between
control and ease, unfortunately.

other way around.

nonsense. it's common to have both.

No. Uncommon.

wrong. a gui is without question easier, faster and significantly more
productive than a a cli in nearly every case, something which has been
repeatedly confirmed by *numerous* objective tests done over the years
as well as looking at people's productivity when using a computer.

wrong again.

modern guis offer both ease of use and control at the same time.

Particularly true when the GUI equivalent hasn't been developed yet. E.g.:
the DOS file-comparison invocation, FC /b or the *ix DIFF. Cheers, -- tlvp

except it has, and way the hell better than either of those.

You mean this?

Yeah, I overlooked that. You think that's worth writing home about? Not me.

But if you mean something else, do try to make the effort to tell what it
is and where to find it. Thanks. Cheers, -- tlvp

Hey, great: WinMerge on that page looks like it'll fill the bill perfectly!

Not sure whether it's TextWrangler or Changes that this graphic is here
for, but the SmashingHub page's link to Changes is dead, and from the
TextWrangler graphic I infer something's Mac-only, hence of no use to me.

Still, the WinMerge item your SmashingHub page cites looks most useful;
thank you, therefore, very much for that. Cheers, -- tlvp
