Yes, I wondered the same thing. My current phone keeps telling me that storage is getting low, and has removed several apps that I used to use, so I've been looking at prices of new ones, and was rather to see that the ones with lower specifications often had a higher price. -- Steve Hayes from Tshwane, South Africa Web: http://www.khanya.org.za/stevesig.htm Blog: http://methodius.blogspot.com E-mail - see web page, or parse: shayes at dunelm full stop org full stop uk

There is an incredible -- and I mean that literally. If I hadn't seen it I would not believe it -- amount of information about phones, half a dozen videos and texts just comparing two models of the same phone, for example. And your post reminded me of one I saw yesterday whhere this year's model has half the storage of last years but is 100 dollars more. He found some small advantages to this year, but 128 extra Gb is a big cost factor yet though it was less, the phone was more. And the phone I bought, only 128G. I hope I don't regret that. I coudl get it with 256 G for $200 more. I son'r uaw my phonw muxh. I can never remember numbers. I wish I could remember how much of the phone I had used. Should have written that down before changing the battery. Too much info to read. I'm glad I asked for suggestiosn here. I'll see how I feel after it comes tomorrow. BTW, I have a physical therapy appt. tomorrow so wanted to send the delivery to a locker. Amazon offerred 3, one in New Jersey where I did some browsing a month or two ago, one that was full, and nee that was not available. No apparent way to look for another. So I'm letting it go here. Theft has not been a problem (except for the one guy whose car was stolen, but none of his packages.) Another guy got married and I see Amazon boxes on his stoop all the time now. :-)

Google cloud, and any other cloud, can delete your data on just about any pretext, including their AI hallucinating that your data breached one or other (unspecified) term of service. It is also my experience that such cloud services become inaccessible unless you continually "upgrade" your software and hardware, which nowadays often means that you never end up paying for it. Cloud storage is OK for the rich, but not for ordinary folk. I now use a batch file to copy my Dropbox folder from my desktop to my laptop, from where I think it may go to the cloud, but they could stop supporting that at any time too. Same thing happened with Evernote. You just start getting used to using one of those things when it stops working, and they say you just need to move on and leave your data behind. Public clouds have uptimes and a reliability which can *never* be matched by private solutions. Clouds are no backups! They allow to use sophisticated services and the secure and safe operation of devices. A good backup strategy is something separate. Most old users here are completely centred on their $200 devices for vital services which is not particularly intelligent. Devices are just means to access data and services. Today's philosophy of using digital services is completely different from what I read in this group. >> It is also my experience that such cloud services become inaccessible >> unless you continually "upgrade" your software and hardware, > > My 7 year old phone is my oldest OS at Android 12 and Google Drive works > just fine on it. > >> Cloud storage is OK for the rich, but not for ordinary folk. > > Yup. Jörg Lorenz, 2026-08-11 10:10: > Most old users here are completely centred on their $200 devices for > vital services which is not particularly intelligent. Devices are just > means to access data and services. Exactly - data is important, not the device. Devices can and do fail at any time. You need to make sure your data is stored in a secure way and with multiple(!) backups in case a file gets deleted or modified unintentionally and you realize this only a few weeks later when you need it. That's the reason, why I have *all* data on servers (which have of course also a backup) and use my mobile devices only as local "cache". My backups are done daily with a deduplicating tool (Borg Backup) which keeps all changes from the last 6 months without requiring a lot of extra storage for this. -- Arno Welzel https://arnowelzel.de

Even with no problems I have always kept a local Google Drive backup. Likewise I haven't had a car accident in over 65 years and my house hasn't burned down in the 26 years I've been here but I still carry insurance. Cause you never know when shit might happen...

You can backup cloud storage as well - just synchronize Google Drive (or any other server you use) with you local computer and make a backup from that in multiple versions, so you can go back in time, if a recent backup shows missing or damaged files. And about "for the rich": Hetzner offers a private Nextcloud instance with 1 TB of storage for less than 5 EUR per month: <https://www.hetzner.com/storage/storage-share/> Using DAVx5 you can synchronize all contacts and calendar entries with that and FolderSync also includes automatic sync with Nextcloud backends for files - for example when you take a picture, this can get uploaded automatically when you are back to a WiFi network or even immediately, if your data plan is ok for that. Yes, a complete device backup would be better, but this is not possible with Android, you can only enable Google backup (without Photos etc. to save storage) which will save *some* (but not all) apps with their settings and data stored on the device. > I now use a batch file to copy my Dropbox folder from my desktop to > my laptop, from where I think it may go to the cloud, but they could > stop supporting that at any time too. I use google things for apps, and Amazon something for the photos, but
it is full. The size I would need is not cheap.
My engineering association has a deal with google, and the size of the
storage is much bigger, but that is not the account my phone uses.

No - instead they have an additional black border at the top and bottom of the display. And Sony only provides updates for less than 5 years. It would look old-fashioned if those borders were very wide. But they are just wide enough to make room for camera, loudspeakers, microphone. Very stylish, I like this much better than those ugly punchholes. > And Sony only provides updates for less than 5 years. The Xperia 1 VI > was released in June 2024 and will by "end-of-life" in April 2028. That used to be the only disadvantage of Sony phones. But AFAIK, it has improved with the latest 1 VIII. Anyway, after "end-of-life" I plan to install another OS. The phone is rootable, unlocking the bootloader is even supported by the company. I'm also surprised by the low battery consumption. The battery could easily survive a 5-day festival, the level went from 80% to 40% in 5 days. But that may be due to the fact that I have about everything in dark mode, so the battery consumption of this OLED screen is almost zero.

See below for the Sony Xperia phones with all three, as you said. Here's a search for 93 recent/current Android phones with all three 1. ESIM 2. SIM (note they only had a choice for "dual sim" for some reason) 3. SD card is not important now - I have not used one in a decade. Being able to plugin a second sim, or an esim, (both possibilities would be nice). That way I can travel to Canada and buy in advance an esim while in Europe. My current phone has "A", so for my next trip I will need to update. Next year. More than half of all current & recent Android phones have sd slots.
Why do you think 60% of all current/recent Android phones have sd slots?
Because they do things that cannot be done even with other methods.
Yes, most of those things can be bought back by desperate consumers.
At a huge cost, where always, the consumer pays for the lost functionality.
In fact, the consumer pays through the nose to replace that sd slot.
Which is why it's absurd that anyone would claim to say they're obsolete.
And yet, there is still one thing sd card slots allow the user that is
impossible to buy back any other way, even paying through the nose for
initial extra storage and never-ending cloud subscriptions to replace
"some" of the lost functionality of the missing sd slot (saving the OEM
about fifty cents).
