An eSIM must be some kind of electronic certificate, in a file.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESIM

+++-----------------------
An eSIM (embedded subscriber identity module) is a form of SIM card that is embedded directly into a device as software installed onto an eUICC chip. In contrast to physical SIM cards, users can connect to and change mobile network operators via the device settings and without the need to physically add or swap a SIM card from the device. A single eSIM plan can connect to several mobile network operators. Devices can hold upwards of 20 eSIM plans simultaneously, with 1 or 2 active.[1][2][3][4][5]

To reduce costs, many eSIM plans only provide data and do not include a phone number.[6] Most phones and tablets released in 2018 or later support eSIM technology.[7] If a phone is bought directly from a carrier with a SIM lock, the phone can only add eSIMs from the carrier that locked the phone, even after a carrier unlock.[8]
-----------------------++-

I don't know if an eSIM can be moved between phones. I'll ask chatgpt.

+++-----------------------
Q: Can an eSIM installed in a phone be moved to another phone?

Yes—but **it depends on the carrier and phone**.

An eSIM generally isn’t like a physical SIM that you simply remove and insert elsewhere. To move it, you typically need to **transfer the eSIM profile** or **activate a new eSIM** on the new phone.

Common cases:

* **iPhone → iPhone:** Many carriers support Apple’s eSIM Quick Transfer.
* **Android → Android:** Some carriers/phone models support direct transfer; otherwise you’ll need a new activation.
* **iPhone ↔ Android:** Usually requires the carrier to issue/reissue the eSIM.
* **Travel eSIMs:** Often **cannot be transferred** once installed. You may need to purchase a new eSIM, depending on the provider.

If you tell me **your current phone, the new phone, and your mobile carrier/eSIM provider**, I can tell you exactly whether it can be moved and how.

Q: No, it is just a theoretical question. Also, I wondered what happens if the phone breaks: a phisical SIM can be just moved across, but what about an eSIM?

Oops, mishandled and deleted the answer (clicked the voice button)

Q: What happens if a phone breaks: a physical SIM can be just moved across, but what about an eSIM?

With an **eSIM, you generally can’t just move it** to a replacement phone the way you move a physical SIM. But your mobile number/plan can usually be transferred to the new phone.

What happens depends on your carrier:

* **If the old phone still works:** you can often use the carrier’s eSIM transfer process. On iPhone, for example, some carriers support direct eSIM transfer during setup.
* **If the old phone is completely dead:** you’ll usually need to activate a new eSIM on the replacement phone through your carrier—often via their app, website, QR code, or customer support.
* **If you lose the phone:** the carrier can normally deactivate the old eSIM and issue a replacement eSIM. This is actually useful for security, because someone who finds the phone can't simply remove your SIM and put it elsewhere.
* **Your number isn't tied permanently to the physical device.** The carrier controls the subscription; the eSIM is essentially the digital credential that lets the phone access it.

So, practically:

**Physical SIM:** break phone → remove SIM → put in new phone → usually works immediately.

**eSIM:** break phone → get replacement phone → transfer/reissue eSIM through carrier → works once activated.

One important consideration if you're choosing between the two: **a physical SIM is more convenient in an emergency**, especially if you travel and might need to borrow/buy an unlocked phone quickly. An eSIM is more convenient day-to-day and can be more secure, but the recovery process depends more on your carrier.

-----------------------++-

In practical terms, my situation is the following: When I travel to Canada, I buy from Amazon a secondary SIM, but I'm limited to vendors that do this. The last time I travelled, the service was bad. I had to buy another SIM card locally from Bell-Canada.

The Amazon vendors cater mostly to visitors to the USA. The SIM is also valid for Mexico and Canada, and in the later case at least has restrictions.

Instead, with an eSIM, I can buy it directly from Bell-Canada while still at Spain and install it before departure. I don't know if it is only data or voice+data, but I prefer the later (so that, for instance, I can phone relatives or a taxi).

+++-----------------------
Q: In my case, I can keep the SIM from my main carrier, and buy an eSIM of another country I intend to travel to, before departure.

Yes — that’s actually one of the **best use cases for an eSIM**.

You can have:

* **Physical SIM:** your normal/main carrier, keeping your usual phone number, calls and SMS.
* **eSIM:** a travel plan for the country you're visiting, typically used for mobile data.

Before departure, you can **buy and install the travel eSIM while you're still at home**, then activate/use it when you arrive. Your main SIM can remain physically in the phone.

On a dual-SIM phone, you typically configure:

* **Mobile data:** travel eSIM
* **Calls/SMS:** main SIM
* **Data roaming:** off on the main SIM, to avoid accidental roaming charges

### And if your phone breaks while travelling?

This is where the distinction becomes important.

Your **main physical SIM** is easy: take it out and put it in another compatible phone.

Your **travel eSIM**, however, generally can't simply be transferred by moving something. You'd need to **reinstall/reissue it on the replacement phone**, and whether that's easy depends on the travel-eSIM provider. Some let you reinstall using the original QR code or their app; others treat the eSIM as single-use and require a new one.

So if you're travelling, I'd recommend **keeping the eSIM QR code/activation details and the provider's app/login information somewhere accessible outside the phone** (e.g. your email or password manager). That can make a replacement much easier.

Also, there's an interesting advantage to your setup: **if the travel eSIM stops working or the phone dies, your main number remains on a removable physical SIM**, so you have a relatively straightforward fallback.
