Yes, it looked very similar to the car registration card which hasn't
changed since then. It was fairly easy to use someone's license as ID
to buy alcohol. If memory serves me, the only identifying things listed
on the license was height and eye color. Maybe not height but eye color
was one of the two. When I went to college in 1978 in North Carolina, I
was the only one without a photo on my license. It was a small college
so I guess there weren't many New Yorkers there because one time when I
was in a convenience store, the clerk gave me a strange look and didn't
know what to do as far as accepting my ID. He was a midget and he
actually stood up on the counter to look into my eyes to check the
color.
