Like a MRU (most recently used) list in Windows, you can clear it out. That only clears THAT list. It does NOT unload any apps. > Then I rebooted the phone, tapped the square, and all 6 were still > running! And only those 6. It's a MRU list. This is a Blu phone. I gather other > phones don't work this way. You are asking in an Android newsgroup. Android memory management works the same way on all Android phones. I don't know how iOS or other mobile operating systems work (don't have those so haven't bothered to investigate their memory management scheme). > Also, at the bottom of the screen after I tap the square is a blue > broom, which appears to close everything at one time. Any smartphone vendor can customize the OS and screens however they want. That is how they differentiate themselves. If they all used the plain vanilla OS without any tweaks, they would all be the same phone so the only factor in choosing one over another would be the hardware (memory size, SD card capacity, speed, processor(s), camera features, etc). I don't have a Blu smartphone to know what they decided to shove into their GUI. To find out about how Blu customized their version of the Android OS and what apps they pre-installed, read the smartphone's manual. http://bluproducts.com/android-phones/ http://s536785483.onlinehome.us/user-manuals/ You did not mention you series and model so I cannot go read the online manual to see what the broom icon does. My guess is you tapped the button to show the Recent list and at the bottom is a button to clear that list. On my Samsung Galaxy Core Prime smartphone, that icon shows as 3 horizontal bars (representing lines in a list) with an "X" character, meaning that will x-out (clear) the MRU list. After a power up, the MRU should be empty until you actually run an app. Not even background services that auto-load will show up there. It is an MRU of the apps that *you* loaded or re-accessed. That's why I suspect you only locked the smartphone instead of actually powering it down since the MRU still has the same entries in it. How do you power down your smartphone? Do you press and HOLD the Power button until you see a prompt asking if you want to power down followed by another safety prompt to ensure you really do want to power down? When it is powering down, does it vibrate just before the screen goes blank to let you know, yep, the OS unloaded and the hardware will immediately power off? That's what my Samsung does. I don't know what your Blu phone does but it should be similar. Just tapping the Power button merely locks the smartphone, not power it off. A long-press is needed on the Power button to power it off. My Samsung's variant of the Android OS clears the MRU (Recent) list on power down or, probably more accurately, begins with an empty MRU on startup. Your Blu variant of Android might somehow retain the MRU list across phone sessions; i.e., the MRU survives a power cycle. That means they would have to write it somewhere that survives a power cycle rather than just retain it in memory. Seems a waste to show an MRU for a newly powered up smartphone before the user has had a chance to run anything yet in the new phone session.
