Auto-startup programs. Same as you've encountered in Windows. > Are these the very same apps that were running when I turned the phone > off? You would have to check yourself. Settings -> Application Manager, scroll over to the Running column. Compare before powering off and after powering on. Unlike Windows where closing a window by exiting the problem has the problem stop and unload from system memory, Android leaves apps running until more space is needed for a newly active app. The old idle app gets stopped to make room for the new active app. For Android, it is the job of the OS to stop and unload old idle apps, not of the user. You could use the Running column mentioned above to stop any still running apps (that you think you exited) but be careful which ones you try to stop. Also, services may be configured to always run which means you kill them but they reappear. That's why some app managers that try to unload the old idle apps don't work as advertized because they cannot prevent the auto-load services from loading again. There are several app manager or battery saver apps but you'll find them of varying usefulness. You can try using a startup manager app but, again, it will not affect services or, if it does, could render many features unusable since those services may not load when needed. http://www.howtogeek.com/165111/how-can-i-stop-apps-from-running-at-boot-on-android-os/
